  1. if I was to see two moons I'd think I'd drank too much and my eyes had gone a bit wobbly...
  2. I have a router firewall which I have set to high security and nothing gets through that unless I wish it to. But I also use Comodo, which doubles it up even more. Nothing gets in or out unless I allow it. I used to use Zone Alarm until it started slowing down my machine.
  3. if all else fails, then download TweakUI from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx There is an option to allow you to log in to a user name without hitting that logon screen, using autologon. That said, I'm the only user on my computer and I don't need to user the tweak in tweakui, Windows just takes me straight into my desktop.
  4. do you have CCleaner set to run when your computer starts? That may (I'm not sure) be responsible for all these being wiped.
  5. Fasterfox, that's its name! Some site owners complain that users of that eat their bandwidth...
  6. it seems that every so often some sites like to block users of FF who have enabled certain add-ons - there's some sites that block FF users who have the extension that allows faster browsing and the prefetch features (I forget its name). I suppose some sites rely on advertising to keep the site going but that's their problem not mine...
  7. yes, that's three of us from the north east of England!
  8. do you not like football Dennis? Given where you live I thought you might have been a Boro fan? As long as it's not Sunderland!
  9. I tried Opera about a year ago and couldn't get it to work properly, some websites wouldn't load properly. I've become so used to Firefox over the years that I'll probably just stick with that but I may gave Opera another try one day, as a test to see if it works any better.
  10. I'll start... My favourite sport is football, the soccer variety, and my favourite team is Newcastle United (the team badge is in my avatar), I've supported them all my life and they are my local team, and play in the English Premiership.
  11. I'm sure this will have been done as a thread in the past, but in case not... What is your favourite sport and in that sport what is the team (or individual if it is, eg tennis) that you prefer?

it's not hijacked. If I type in the same, I get the same result. It's one way of getting a blank page.

same as mine, I prefer a blank screen.
  15. unless I'm going to be out of the house for a while, when I'm finished with the computer I put it into standby. Though, like others, I do switch it off when I go to bed (which will be in about 5 minutes!)
  16. I don't use Thunderbird for email, just newsgroups. I know there's Google Groups but I prefer the simplicity of using a newsreader rather than the web interface. It's that aspect of Thunderbird i would like to see integrated into Firefox, if that were possible.
  17. I've used Thunderbird for years, though I've always wished Firefox and Thunderbird could be integrated into the one package. That's never going to happen now.
  18. they should be, though I can't see any from the UK (eg .co.uk) at the moment, they are all .com sites.
  19. To the original poster: I don't know where you live, but in the UK it would be classed as theft as well as possibly an offence under other statutes. The rule of thumb is - if you have to ask if it's illegal, it probably is!

when I first had access to the internet at home (many years ago) it was through a form of WebTV, it was accessed through my set top box with the former UK cable company NTL and was aclled Open Internet Access. It was impossible to load some websites and for the first 6 months I didn't even have a keyboard and instead had to type any email etc using the hand set and an on screen keyboard. Very slow and cumbersome, but I did buy an infra red keyboard eventually which sped things up. However, some websites just didn't look right and I was glad to eventually get a proper internet connection - even though it was just a dial up AOL account, until I eventually got broadband!
  21. nothing like that appearing for me! Very weird!
  22. I must admit I only use one account simply because I like to have everything at hand, rather than having to switch between accounts. On my old computer I once had a separate, limited user account and found it, as you say, too limiting. I rarely used it because of this and eventually just deleted the account. With this computer I've just stuck to the one account, but every recommendation I see seems to be to create a limited user account when accessing the internet. I suppose so long as my computer is as secure as possible then having the one account should be OK.
  23. When you access the internet do you do so through an account with Computer Administrative privileges or do you have a separate user account with Limited features? I am the only person who uses this computer, and all I ever have had is the one account, which is obviously an account with administrative privileges. I have read though that this is not a good idea from a security point of view, and that it would be better to have two accounts, one with limited privileges and to use that account to access the internet and to use the other account purely for computer housekeeping, so to speak. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Should I create another user account for safety?
  24. Hmmm... Microsoft should be able to obtain perfection as it's their operating system we are forced to use. It's like having only one builder in the area and hoping he builds your house with both doors and windows (sic). One without the other is a waste of time - the thieves can get in. Sorry, but if Microsoft can't build a system that's reliable then it's a system that's not fit for purpose. They run an almost monopoly on PCs etc and therefore they have to produce the goods and not have people chasing them up for patches. Just my thoughts.
  25. same here. I'm after a new laptop but all the ones I like the look of come shipped with Vista and I want to wait a while before buying anything with Vista installed.
