  1. Isn't that test from 2013? I have Windows Defender/MSE installed on all my machines (including the ones at work) and I have not seen a virus in ages. I don't rely too much on those (probably biased) AV comparatives. For me, the best AV software is the less annoying. Using your brain a following some security guidelines should suffice.
  2. As of February 20th, Windows Defender removes that so called adware installed on Lenovo laptops.
  3. You probably need to stop VSS prior to defragmenting. There is an option to do that inside defraggler settings. Also, keep in mind that Windows Defragmenter doesn't take into account all files and that it even just ignore files/fragments bigger than a fixed size. The bottom line is that its defragmentation report could be some sort of a white lie.
  4. I have just read they are denying installing adware into their laptops (obviously trying to cover their asses). That's what I hate the most about laptops and the kind... They come preloaded with all sort of bloatware. Another thing that I don't understand is why laptop bioses only have some options and not a full-fledged bios.
  5. I don't think we are just two people asking for this. At least, I hope not. Best regards.
  6. Do not mistake free disk space for free RAM.
  7. I recommed switching to windows 8.1 if you are able. I have tested it on 1GB RAM notebooks and it leaves almost 50% free memory in comparison to Win 7. 2 GB RAM is the minimum for Win7 in my opinion. That, or running without antivirus and no other browser than IE. Of course, you should remove all unnecessary programs from startup, etc first. And install only what you need, nothing else. Swapping the HDD for a SSD could also do wonders for a netbook, which are, implicitly slow.
  8. I have asked to do the same too. Annoying for me.
  9. Microsoft Security Essentials updated to version 4.7.205.0 Under Windows 8.1, Windows Defender is still 4.6.x.x And, judging from the capture below, MS hasn't noticed we are in 2015 now.
  10. Please accept an apology.
  11. Agreed. But it seems he/she is ignoring whatever advice was given.
  12. I am wondering... Could pcfa199 be a spambot? If not, his/her English skills are terrible.
  13. Good report. I am wondering whether Defraggler "feels" like it's discontinued. No updates since a lot of time and a few long standing bugs remain (the cpu usage and the terrible "fast fill" algorithm come to mind).
  14. I am running several computers with MSE (Win7) and Windows Defender (Win8.1) and I haven't had any issues in ages. I love the simplicity of MSE.
  15. Agreed. The faster we get rid of Flash the better. I remember trying Flash on an old Pentium 4 computer and it ran like garbage. HTML5 played videos quite well in comparison.
  16. I was hating Win8 just for the terrible UI mess that is Metro. But I have found out that it performs quite well on most computers, even better than Seven. Win 8.1 with a start menu replacement that is.
  17. You could try also unticking HUGE FILES. They are probably not worth the time defragmenting them (unless they are pretty fragmented).
  18. Regular defrag also consolidates free space. That's way it takes up so long to complete. BUT the algorithm is far from perfect = megaslow in some cases.
  19. Probably system files or NTFS metadata.
  20. Indeed. Installed all the updates. No problems so far. EDIT. We should include a Win7 remark in the thread's title.
  21. The dreaded KB3004394 is appearing for me today under Win 8.1 I will try installing it. I have a backup.
  22. IMHO the Defrag Freespace algorithms are quite bugged right now. Sometimes it does its work, sometimes it introduces a lot more fragmentation.
