  1. I don't think it should include files that were recovered by chkdsk... deleting those would be considered data loss. Those files are not just frivolous creations of Windows; they are actual file chains recovered from filesystem errors. You are technically supposed to look through them to see what it has recovered (but in the old days, only a technician could have done this). If you are able to read the file header and can determine what kind of file it is, then giving it a proper file extension usually makes the .chk file accessible again. Starting with NTFS, most recovered files maintain their proper names and extensions.

I'm assuming by the fact that your files are *.chk that you are using FAT32. If I'm correct in that assumption, that is a big mistake; you should switch to NTFS as soon as you can to avoid future data loss. If I'm incorrect and you are using NTFS, then good. NTFS maintains a journal of file changes and lost files and lost file chains are a lot more recoverable than when under a FAT32 filesystem.

I also noticed that the latest version doesn't successfully clean Run MRU. I went into Start menu properties > Start Menu tab > Customize > Advanced tab > Clear list and that cleared it.

It isn't broken. It works for everyone else. My guess is that there is something wrong with your computer.

  2. All that the Kaspersky scanner is doing is WARNING the user that there is a process killer. Therefore, if it isn't a trusted program the user can make an educated decision about whether or not to keep the application. Kaspersky does not report any malware or virus.

The process killer is there to kill any running processes of CCleaner during installation. Nothing more.

I hope that this helps clear things up. :)

  3. I just ran CCleaner for the first time and afterwards I tried to open Diskeeper, the (amazing) defrag program, and i wasn't able to. The message said something about being unable to access it. I had to uninstall and reinstall Diskeeper. Is there any known conflict between these two programs? Anyone else experiencing this?

    Thanks

I use Diskeeper and I haven't had any problems.

  4. Or, you could just be like me and hook an external mouse/keyboard up to your notebook. :D

You definitely won't want to mess around with the notebook's inards on your own. Generally the only easy-to-access parts of a notebook are the RAM and the hard drive. Some also have removable optical drives, wireless cards, etc., but most current notebooks really aren't designed to be tampered with by the user.

  5. Things to check for:

    1. You downloaded AND installed VB runtimes? (Make sure that you installed it after downloading)

    2. Which version of CCleaner are you using? The current version is 1.28.

    3. Did you install CCleaner with Norton and/or Windows Defender turned on? (If so, reinstall with those turned off)

    4. Are your permissions working properly? If not, download and install DAF Medium. When you launch DAF: click Tools > Repair Permissions > Go

Well...this covers quite a bit of information. What could narrow down the problem is doing the following:

    1. Run CCleaner and let it crash.

    2. Start > Run > (type) eventvwr > press OK

    3. Now look in the right window pane. Double click Applications, and look at the times. Are there any Warnings or Errors at the time that CCleaner crashed? If so write down the Event ID, and the source then post them here.

    4. Now double click System, and look at the times. Are there any Warnings or Errors at the time that CCleaner crashed? If so...write down the Event ID, and the source then post them here.

That's about all that I got without having more information. :)

  6. Updating your VB could possibly fix your problem. That's why I suggested it. Your problem sounds like a CCleaner crash, and the most common solution to that is updating your VB runtime. If it doesn't work, then you can post back with more information, and members will assist you in troubleshooting your problem. :)

  7. I'm not sure that this is the proper place to post this but it seemed to fit. I have been having continuous Blue Screens of Death, and I originally thought that it was just my HD problem.

I finally emailed my minidumps to DjLizard and the system crashes were cause by VERMONT.SYS. That may not be correct because I am doing this from memory. I deleted the email.

Since uninstalling eTrust I have no longer had the crashes. Thus far at least. I haven't seen this problem on other machines, but maybe this could be helpful to someone else.

Bummer, btw. I really did like eTrust.

  8. Just started using CCleaner today, as I found my computer was getting really slow and starting to freeze up regularly.

When I run Issues/Registry integrity/ActiveX and class issues, the status bar gets to 15% and then hangs. I've run the other searches independently and they work fine.

Any ideas how I can get this final part of the registry clean up to work?

    Thanks

Hi Gino and Welcome :) Sorry for the delayed response.

Download and launch DAF med (in my signature) > tools > repair permissions > go

I would like to add though that your problems sound like a more serious problem. Yes CCleaner will cleanup crap on your machine but the regular freezing I think is a bigger problem than your machine needing to be cleaned.

  9. I recently ran the Cleaner with the Windows/System/Temporary Files box checked. It came up with all my Nero 7 Temp folders and files.

I'm not sure that it's safe to delete these files, so my question is two fold:

    1) Does anyone know if Nero will function properly when all the Nero 7 unpacked Temp files are deleted?

    2) Better still, Does anyone know how to exclude the Nero Temp files from being included in the Scan results?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Hi wenospeak. Welcome :)

I don't use Nero so I'm taking an educated guess here. But in the applications tab Nero should be listed and you should have a choice as to whether or not you want those deleted.

And yes, things will run fine after running CCleaner. I do however suggest that you download the winapp2.ini because updates could have been made. There is a link in my signature.

    Have a nice day!

  10. You could also try updating your extensions. I can see that at least your IE Tab and Tabbrowser Preferences are old.

That is one thing that FF never seems to do for me: update my themes/extensions automatically. I have it set to do so, but it never does. It should check for updates when you run FF, or at least let you pick when you want it to look for them. That is my only quibble with FF, but it is definitely a nuisance!

yeah, I updated them right after posting that ;)
