Hi jamjar. Welcome
It sounds like 1 of 2 things to me.
Either 1. You aren't logged on as the administrator, or 2. You need to repair your permissions.
Download and launch DAF the medium build.
> click Tools
> click Repair Permissions
> click GO
> reboot (because your computer will be happy)
Light build, which is just Dial-a-fix, and can just do services tweaks and DLL registrations. People who have XP Pro can use Repair Permissions. People who have XP Home must get Medium.
Medium, which is Dial-a-fix plus the secedit package; this allows people who have XP Home to use Repair Permissions.
Let us know if that works

After running the command sfc /scannow (thanks, krit86lr) the problem was fixed.
The problem was probably caused by QSoft RAMDisk 1.0.
Thanks, everybody.
haha...You're lucky!!!
Glad it worked for you.

Another overlooked solution for registry related problems of a particular user profile versus a format is to create another new user profile and copy all important documents over to it. Well that will only work if the registry problem is in HKCU, if it's in HKLM then no luck.
Good suggestion, but who is formatting/formatted? I think that I missed something.

your
SMARTass.exe is in the house!

but even so the restore points disapear when I just look at the recycle bin.
HLS -- LMAO!

Ok krit - I gotta know your sucky solution. Look up each and every registry key to see which one was the one you needed?
Wipe Windows and reload?
sonsie
It's tooo embarrassing.
My lips are sealed. I was only willing to embarrass myself if it was absolutely necessary. And now that your computer is fixed I am saved!
BTW: What program did you use to clean the registry?

Okay, what about posting a HJT log, and if everything is clean doing a repair installation?
That question is @DjLizard by the way.

First, I'd like to say that this problem is NOT caused by CCleaner.
After my last post I discovered that Empty Recycle Bin also delete the restore points.
Worse. Soon after a reboot, opening the Recycle Bin (just looking the files in it!) is enough to make all restore points vanish.
And this continue to happen...
...after running a full chkdsk (no problems detected)
...after uninstalling CCleaner
...after uninstalling Eraser
...after running Dial-a-fix to Reinstall System Restore
I have no idea of what to do next.
Any suggestions?

The button should appear in this order.
If you never get the 2nd picture, then your permissions could be messed up. Download and launch DAF Medium > Tools > Permissions > Go.
-
I have an idea that may or may not work but I think that it's worth a shot. It seems as though this problem has yet to be resolved for some people in the past.
Download and launch DAF Medium > Tools > Reinstall System Restore > Go > Reboot. Then check the information in Post #2.
I am hoping that somehow your system restore settings got corrupted, and a reinstall will reset the default settings. If this doesn't work hopefully someone will think of more options.
Keep us posted!

Hi Vajravrtti, and welcome to the forum
The log that you posted doesn't show any restore points being cleaned. I just ran some scans and my restore points are still there.
Try this:
* Right-click My Computer > properties > click the System Restore tab > be sure that "Turn of System Restore" is not checked.
* If "Turn of System Restore" is checked be sure to reboot after unchecking it.
If this isn't your problem, maybe reinstalling System Restore will work.

Well it could be because I'm on dial-up. Then again something I had forgot about; I suppose my proxy filtering software CookieCop could also possibly be the reason why I didn't notice any improvements. Who knows for sure.
In any event I'm just feeling lucky that Firefox is running on my system at all as previously it would crash my whole system at about exactly ten minutes. The current version has only crashed just Firefox itself only once but that was due to using some crappy third-party extension I was just trying out.
Well I'm on broadband and this is the second time that I've tried it, and I didn't notice any change either.
Bummer, I would like it to work for me too.

I had the same the same thing happen to me once. It is very annoying.
Unfortunately, the solution that I used is not a happy solution, and therefore I am not going to suggest it. (because it sucks!).
If I were you I would try merging your registry items and see if that was the problem first. That's an easy thing to try. Hopefully there is an easier fix than what I did. I'll tell you as a last resort.
EDIT: Try Humpty's idea!

Word up.
Okay, well I've already backed up my computer twice this week, just to be safe. But why should I see a technician if I'm just going to replace my HDD? Or are you telling me to see a technician to replace my HDD for me?

He sits next to Paula Abdul. I'm too embarassed to say anything more...
What are you talking about. He sits next to Paula Abdul where?
Maybe this has something to do with Am. Idol? I've never watched it so your explanation didn't mean anything to me.
Who is he? Not where does he sit....hahahaha
