Word! Glad to be on. Wish I could get on more often, fo sure. But don't worry, I wouldn't totally abandon you guys. Where else would you guys get your daily dose of abuse?! "graced us with your presence" = "corrupted what little shred of decency was left in the forum"

    Advice please

Whoa! I'm assuming you mean on more than one computer, right? I run Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware maybe once a month... not that I recommend this to other users! But I'm tired of running scans just to come up clean every time. If I want to spin my platters, I'll just re-encode my audio library or something productive like that. And JohnDemo, I too used to dislike Ad-Aware very much, but it is starting to grow on me, because it does indeed detect items that Spybot misses (even if it takes a meg or so more of RAM to do it).
  3. Or, you could just be like me and hook an external mouse/keyboard up to your notebook. You definitely won't want to mess around with the notebook's inards on your own. Generally the only easy-to-access parts of a notebook are the RAM and the hard drive. Some also have removable optical drives, wireless cards, etc., but most current notebooks really aren't designed to be tampered with by the user.
  4. Glenn's right. If the drive could read/write blank disks, it would be a CD-RW (re-writeable) drive, not a CD-ROM (read-only memory) drive. Since a CD-ROM drive can't write on a blank disk, what would be the point of it recognizing that disk in the first place, since it wouldn't be able to put anything on it anyway? You can purchase decent internal CD burners for $20-30 these days, so you may want to consider that. But your current hardware just won't work, no matter what software you get.
  5. Well, that's certainly a morbid thought. I sure hope my email isn't a permanent beta! I honestly think that it will one day be considered a finished product, although I agree that it may be a while... I haven't lost hope though, cause features are constantly being added to both Google's email and chat services. So at least I have some visible proof that Google is doing something! Of course, I hope that they are taking the time to stabilize old features before adding the new ones... ~fingers crossed~
  6. Well, I believe I am the only certified hufu expert on this here forum, so just to prevent any future confusion: Hopefully this will alleviate any worries that other members might have about whether or not they are receiving erroneous hufu information.
  7. Sweetness! Thanks a bizzle, Mista G-to-the-izzle.
  8. Thanks for the link, Humpty. I just read the last couple of posts on that site, and here is a quote: So apparently, it would appear that Google is taking the fault for this. So theoretically, this should be gone when Gmail comes out of beta, without any changes made on my part whatsoever. I'm still going to play around with the JS settings, just to see if I notice a difference or not, but I have a feeling that this is something that time will have to heal. Thanks to everyone who posted info and suggestions!
  9. @ pwillener: It crashes right after I enter in my username/password, so during the logging in process. I would try in Safe Mode, but I wouldn't know if that fixed it or not, because it signs in fine more often than not. The crash only happens every few days or so, and as far as I can tell, it is totally random. At least, I haven't been able to pick out any pattern yet. @ Sniper: I don't use Thunderbird, nor do I intend to, but I certainly do appreciate the suggestion! @ Eldmannen: A friend sent me a link to a forum where the turning off JS suggestion was given. It appeared to fix the problem for a number of users, so that certainly could be the problem. The only thing about that that strikes me as strange is that the problem occurs at random times. If it was just a matter of turning on/off JS, wouldn't the problem happen every time it was turned on, and not just periodically? Also, I have the CustomizeGoogle extension, which some people reported crashed Gmail. But since I also encountered the problem on a computer without that extension, I doubt that is the problem. I think ultimately, I'm putting my money on either an FF bug, a Gmail bug, or JavaScript. I'll leave JS off and see if the problem occurs again. @ everybody: Thanks for all of the suggestions, and if anyone has run into/fixed this problem, please feel free to share your fix!
  10. Been having a funny problem for quite a while now, and I wondered if anyone had experienced this as well. Periodically, when I open up my Gmail account (with Firefox, of course), FF crashes! It gives me the Windows Error Report message, and then FF closes. At first I figured it was FF, but Google Mail is the only page that does this, and there doesn't seem to be anything that triggers it. I would say it happens once every day or two. Yesterday, I went on my friend's computer to check my mails, and the same thing happened! So apparently, it isn't just me. Anyone else have this happen, and if so, did they find a fix? Computer info: Both comps have WinXP Pro with SP2 Both comps were using Firefox 1.5.0.2 His FF had no extensions, mine had 11 (I could list them if you guys want, but I doubt it is relevant, since his has none and the same thing happened)
  11. http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/21/seagate...racuda-7200-10/ Pardon me while I clean off my screen after reading that... Although, that 16 MB cache has GOT to go!

    FF Issues

You could also try updating your extensions. I can see that at least your IE Tab and Tabbrowser Preferences are old. That is one thing that FF never seems to do for me: update my themes/extensions automatically. I have it set to do so, but it never does. It should check for updates when you run FF, or at least let you pick when you want it to look for them. That is my only quibble with FF, but it is definitely a nuisance!
  13. Can't be any less secure than AIM! I gotta agree with Eldmannen and his intense dislike for AOL products. They're always bloated, and they put junk all over your computer. I can't imagine that they're all that secure either... I like GT cause it's small, sleek, loads very fast, and is easy to use. It has a couple little quirks that bug me, but all in all, it isn't too bad.
  14. Well, GAIM supports both AIM and Yahoo!, as well as dozens of other IM apps. And if you want to be cool like me, you should get Google Talk. BTW, that explorer.exe process is looking pretty hefty... may wanna kill him off. j/k
  15. Thanks! That's kinda what I figured, but that really seems kind of stupid. What is the point of setting a service to manual if under certain circumstances, it will start automatically anyway? At the very least, it should notify the user before starting itself. Either that, or MS should just get rid of the Manual option and just stick with Automatic and Disabled.
  16. Eh, beta browsers scare me. Specially after all the hell I've heard other users go through with it! I'll just stick with my unused, stable v.6 until they finalize v.7, and even then I'll probably still stick with FF... @ Eldmannen: If it's already "Manual", that means it may or may not be turned on. Did you try starting the process after changing it's Startup Type? @ DjLizard: Does Windows automatically start services that you have labeled as "Manual" without your permission? And if so, what then is the difference between Manual and Automatic for a service's Startup Type? I assumed that if you set a service to manual, it wouldn't come on unless you "manually" turned it on, but I've set a number of my services to manual and stopped them for experimentation purposes, and later found them turned on again. Shouldn't Windows at least notify when a manual service needs to be used, and ask permission to use it? Or is what I'm saying impossible, and maybe Windows didn't really start those services? Sorry to get a little off topic, I was just curious.
  17. Well, yes, I suppose that us FF users TECHNICALLY use IE when we bust out our IE Tab... but he had the "IEXPLORE.EXE" process running which means he was running the full-blown IE browser! THE HORROR!!!! I don't know what I'd do without all of my tasty tabbed goodness, my exotic extension assortment, and my sexy skin selections... Sigh... I love FF...
  18. "IEXPLORE.EXE"? Why Eldmannen, I'm surprised! You actually used Internet Explorer?! As far as your problem goes, if restarting doesn't work like Andavari suggested (which I imagine it will, but just in case), then you could try clicking 'View', then 'Select Columns...', then uncheck the 'User Name' box, and then click 'OK'. Then, go back and recheck that box. That might refresh your list. Worth a shot, anyway...
  19. Since I use AVG Free as my antivirus, I thought this sounded pretty sweet, until I read this: So yeah, it looks like if you want all of that antispyware goodness, you'll have to break down and spend some money. Thanks for the info, hazelnut.
  20. Symantec hit with $1 billion tax bill Holy shite! Sucks to be them! Not only do they write crappy commercial software; they don't even pay their bills!
  21. Well Andavari, I guess you and I should have a gift exchange this year, because now we're both off Mr. Clause's list.
  22. One other obvious thing to check would be to see if the Empty Recycle Bin checkbox was checked or not. Lots of people delete stuff, but then they never empty their Recycle Bin, which means the stuff is still there. So, you most likely had tons of junk in your Recycle Bin, and CCleaner just freed up that space for you. Also, CCleaner has the option to clean out your Hotfix Uninstallers as well, which can free up hundreds of megabytes of space, so perhaps look and see if that box is checked too. Let us know what you find out, and welcome to the forum!
  23. Well, if I'm not getting presents this year, maybe I'll lace Santa's milk with vodka. Let's see how well Santa pilots his lil' sleigh when he's drunk off his @$$.

    foobar

I've recently become a convert to Foobar because it plays and converts my FLAC audio right out of the box. I like how it not only converts .cda files into FLAC/MP3/etc., but it also lets you convert from one compressed non-cda format to another. Easy to use, slim in size and resource usage, and IT PLAYS FLAC! w00t! Although, I will admit it isn't much to look at. Haven't tried XMPlay yet, but from the pics, it looks like a decent audio player as well.
