  1. Yeah, but yet it still managed to beat a version of Outpost and Zone Alarm Pro that were only several months old, as opposed to Jetico's 2-year old version. That definitely interests me! If they do start updating it again, it will be unstopable!
  2. Hmm... it appears that Andavari trademarked "Common Sense". So now do I have to pay you if I use it? I guess in that case it's a good thing I don't!
  3. To the best of my knowledege, I am still the only "lokoike" on the web, and hopefully it will stay that way. I always post as "lokoike", too, cause I'm not clever enough to think of more than one good user name.
  4. Yeah, I wouldn't normally think of something like that, but I just had it happen not to long ago. No real "fix" for that, other than turning it off, but at least you can isolate the problem.
  5. Well, I suppose that would potentially remove any dust...
  6. The only things I can think of are either the fans, the hard drives (or optical drives, if there is a disk in them), or the tower speaker. You would probably know if it was the speaker, as it would be more of a beep than a soft noise, so most likely not that. So I would put my money on the fans or HDs. To see if it is a fan, try disconnecting your case fans (but don't disconnect the CPU fan!) and then start up the computer and see if it remains. If the noise persists, then it may still be the CPU, PSU, or north bridge fan, but at least you know it isn't (or is) the case. To see if it is the hard drive, check and see if the noise occurs when there is HD activity. If the hard drive light is flashing and when it stops, the noise also stops, that is probably your problem. If none of these seem to be the problem, the only other thing I can think of is to try turning off your monitor and see if the noise stops (seriously). I have dealt with computers where the monitors made a high-pitched whine.
  7. LOL, Abbot and Costello FTW! No need to apologize. We thrive on questions. Without them, all of us here at the CCleaner forum would shrivel up into tiny imploded prunes, which makes it extremely difficult to type. Ok, I thunk so, but I just wanted to make sure. You see, I have this really bad habit of calling girls guys and visa versa... Maybe some hair to go along with that mascara? Anyways, I personally like Grisoft's AVG Free for an antivirus and Zone Alarm for a firewall, but for the most part, what antivirus and firewall you get is mostly according to your personal preferences.
  8. This should answer your questions: http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?s=&sho...indpost&p=31374 Also, if you download the newest CCleaner version (1.28) the Hotfix Uninstaller feature is fixed! So, download that, and you won't have to worry any longer about checking/unchecking certain boxes.
  9. Awesome! Thanks hazelnut, that is a great link! I laughed myself silly when I saw that the Windows firewall scored a 0%! Also, the firewall called Jetico got 1st place in one set of tests and 2nd in another, so naturally, I looked it up, and what do you know, apparently it is freeware! Jetico Personal Firewall Who knows, maybe we have a new replacement for ZA/Outpost?!

You can still download the old version (2.20) for free, but the newest version 2.5, and the soon to be released 2.8 must be paid for. The only kind of software I can think of that could cause physical problems would be overclocking software, which I'm sure you don't use. Apps like CPU Burn-in give your processor loads of commands that cause it to heat up to extraordinary temperatures. Software such as this could potentially adversely affect your computer, but otherwise, software is not the culprit. One possibility (and perhaps you already addressed this) is your PSU (power supply unit). It is the box located in the top-back section of your tower, and it sends power to all of your components. If you used the same case/PSU for both computers, that might be where your problem is at.
  11. Heh, it is really funny you say that, cause I just fixed a computer this morning, and guess where the problem lied? Yes, it was Norton. You see, this lady uses dial-up (AOL; yuck!) and her antivirus is Norton (double-yuck! the worst of both worlds!). So she had just recently gotten an update for Norton, and suddenly, Norton started preventing her from accessing the Internet! She would dial on, and as soon as AOL tried to check her username/password to let her on the net, Norton would pop on and consider that exchange a "threat"! No joke! So, I just disabled Norton, got her on-line, and then used LiveUpdate to get the newest Norton update. Sure enough, that fixed the problem. Stupid Norton. Also, even with 4 HDs, Norton still consumes plenty of RAM and CPU resources, as well as HD, so to keep Norton happy, sonsie better get a few more terabytes of RAM and weld on about a dozen or so more cores to his/her CPU. Or, just get a different antivirus solution.
  12. Well, you can get affordable refurbished/new LCDs and flat-screen CRTs on newegg.com. That is where I get all of my computer components/accessories, and they always ship fast, and have the best prices on the net. You might be able to pick one up new for close to what you would pay for a used one!
  13. It is back to how it was in previous versions. I like it better this way; the 1.27 icon was too light. Thanks for the update, MrG.
  14. How did you know?! Seriously, I love Vettes! Actually, that testing site supports everything from 14.4k dial-up to T4. I'm assuming that you are using 56k, so you should show up on the list. The very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very bottom of the list, that is.
  15. Don't worry Patti. Eldmannen is just messing with you! If you bring up Command Prompt and enter in "format C:", it will prompt you to totally erase the contents of that drive, including the operating system! Thankfully, you can't actually format your primary OS hard drive while that OS is running!

  17. Least he didn't make fun of your Yugo! And K, here is a cool site that I believe hazelnut(?) posted a while back for checking your up/download speeds: http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/

    Slow start-up

Was it saying that the antivirus was turned off, or that you were using an outdated version? Whenever I have that problem, I always just download the antivirus's newest updates, and it fixes it right up.

    Sound

Oops! Sorry for listing the wrong entry. Glad it is fixed now.

    Sound

I believe the default sound that is used is "start.wav", which is located under C:\ WINDOWS\ Media. As a note, on your computer, the ".wav" part may not be listed. It depends if you have your computer set to show extensions or not. So it will either be called "start.wav", or just plain "start". Hopefully that'll fix it, but if not, I'll try to think of something else.
  21. Look under the Announcements section, cde. MrG posted both a changelog (which hazelnut mentioned) and a time frame that 1.28 would be released in.
  22. I'm using WinXP Pro 32-bit, so sorry I can't let you know my experiences. I can, however, tell you that in version 1.28 of CCleaner (due out in a couple days) there will be full 64-bit OS support, so that should solve your problem.

Oh.... fine... pout... I'm sorry Andavari snicker
  24. Whoa! That is an awesome extension! Thanks for the info, rridgely. I'll be picking that up right away.
