  1. O gee, way to stick up for me there, Cappy boy. O, what's this? A PM from CaPMan? Saying that K is a total n00b with a lame avatar? Ooo, I better not let her know how he really feels about her! *hush hush* heh, that should keep her off my back for a while lokoike rubs his hands together with glee at his brilliant idea
  2. Well supposedly I'm her "Rock Star", but that didn't stop her from insinuating that I like country music*, so there is no telling what sorts of terrible things she will say about you in the future! She's just a sneaky lil' booger. * and yes, K, I am still salty about that, and will probably continue to be so until the end of time, so don't even try to redeem yourself
  3. Ah, most splendid! You are the shiz, CaPMan, and don't let krit86lr tell you any different!
  4. Not a problem. Glad to help!
  5. Try installing the Visual Basic 6 runtimes. There is a good chance that they are corrupted, as your computer is currently goofy. Also, do any other programs crash the way that CCleaner does? Or is CCleaner the only one that does this?
  6. So the freeware version doesn't play nice with WinXP? I wanted to test out that before I jumped head-first into buying the commercial version... Guess I'll have to do some more thinking on this. I don't want to shell out and then end up not liking it as much, which may or may not be the case. Regardless, thank you for the screenshot, Tarun. The GUI seems nice and easy-to-use from that shot. I like my firewalls to make a lot of rucus, at least at first. I like to customize what it can and cannot let in, and it appears that Outpost does that, which I think is good. Is there any way to get a commercial trial, or do I have to use the buggy free version?
  7. Umm... Well... technically... I do... But it doesn't really do anything (or hasn't yet, anyway). The only reason I got it was cause it sounded nifty and it was small. Who knows, maybe one day it will save my life! But as far as Google apps go, I use Gmail, Google Talk, and the aforementioned Google Safe Browsing extension. I also use Google's text, video, and image search, and I use their page language translator. Now that I have my CustomizeGoogle extension, I feel pretty safe using Google's products, because it anonymizes/prevents them from getting info about me.
  8. So is it safe to delete, or does it actually serve some purpose? And I just thought of a Windows bug that annoys me almost as much as the Recycle Bin thing: Sometimes after you run Disk Defragmenter, you get a message saying that Windows could not defrag some files, and it asks you to view the list of files that didn't defragment for more info. And then, when you press OK and the list appears, NO FILES ARE LISTED!!! At first I thought it was just my computer, but that is something that I have had happen on multiple rigs as well. Although it might only happen on XP, but I'm not sure. Whatever the case, that just bugs the crap out of me. Stupid Windows. I think this thread has helped lower my blood pressure about a dozen points or so.
  9. I believe I may have to mildly (read: strongly, forcefully, emphatically, necessarily, obviously, definitely, certainly, of coursely) disagree with you. Of course, I suppose it could be my favorite in the sense that I love to hate it. But otherwise... no... no definitely not... However, that suggestion did give me an idea for a new CCleaner feature: Why not have it scour the HD for any music remotely resembling country, and secure delete it with 6^724 overwrites? And how about R & B too, while we're at it.
  10. I totally agree that cde's points are valid and reasonable, but I personally cast my vote with Oliver. For example, what if there is 3k of slack containing a soup of random data, but amongst that data, is your 9-digit social security number? Sure it is small, but that one number, if gotten ahold of by a hacker, is enough to totally trash your identity. Even small amounts of slack, such as 2-4k, can contain plenty of extremely confidential information: tax information, names, phone numbers, bank account numbers, etc. And amongst all of the random data contained in file slack, those numbers/letters, if they are still grouped together, can stick out like a sore thumb. I do agree with cde, however, when it comes to not wiping all of the slack on the entire hard drive. That would literally take hours! CCleaner should only wipe the slack on files that it is already removing (cookies, logs, etc.). Now the most important question: does Visual Basic even offer this type of low-level functionality, or is this feature impossible to implement in CCleaner as is?
  11. The only item under Advanced that you should not check is 'Hotfix Uninstallers', because currently it is buggy, and doesn't delete the right things. It will be fixed in the next version, but if you are using version 1.27.260 or earlier, leave it unchecked. Otherwise, everything else can be checked without harming your computer, although you should only check the items that you are certain you want cleaned. For example, if you check 'User Assist History', your most recent applications list (left-hand side of the Start menu) will be cleared out. This doesn't hurt anything, but if you use those shortcuts, it may be a nuisance to you, so you can leave it unchecked if you want those shortcuts to stay. If you want to know what each box does, simply check it and you will be given a warning about what it cleans. Read the warnings carefully and decide if you really want CCleaner cleaning that item or not. Let me know if this helps, or if you need to know anything else. Welcome to the forum!
  12. Okay, one question, and it's a big one: How well does it actually protect you? So far I have heard unanimously that Outpost is faster and uses less resources than ZA, but is it as aggressive in doing its job? To me, that is the single most important reason I still use ZAP. Since I have installed ZA Pro, I have literally not gotten a single virus or spyware/adware. NOT ONE. I could honestly delete my av/antispyware and not lose any sleep at night, but I don't just in case... If Outpost lets in even the smallest malicious piece of code, that is enough to totally turn me off, and so far, ZAP is literally perfect in that aspect. So basically, can any long-time Outpost users (read: Tarun ) tell me if they ever have anything unwanted get through? This basically makes or breaks my decision to switch over, so I want to be absolutely positive on this one. I do not take my PC security/health lightly.

Sigh... This crap again. When version 1.27 of CCleaner came out, there was a ton of posts which answered your question, as well as others. Go back to the second page of CCleaner Discussion, and read just about every other post; almost all of them talk about this same, dead, topic. And here is my answer(s) to your question: http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?s=&sho...indpost&p=30272 If you read from that post down, it gives several different opinions from several different users on this topic. Now hopefully this question about that goddamn toolbar will NEVER be asked again, because everyone is tired of answering it.
  14. Methinks I'm being mocked. sending burtman the 'lokoike Virus'
  15. Well, if you want an external, you can buy an actual case (not just the cable) for about the same price. I just bought this one last week for my Maxtor 200 GB, and it is a fine case, for a good price. The PATA > USB 2.0 is best for if you have to test multiple drives, and don't feel like messing around with screws and such. But an enclosure is the best choice if you want an external drive.
  16. I don't believe it is related to Nvidia, because I have a pair of notebooks with ATI integrated, both of which contain this folder as well. Also, I built a computer 2 months ago with an ATI x850 graphics card, and Program Files still contained this folder. I think it is related to Windows itself. I just built a new comp, with a clean install of Windows XP Home SP2, so I'll fire it up tomorrow and see if that folder is there or not. But I'm pretty sure it will be.

    Speed up you IE

"Slow" and "fast" are totally relative. What is fast to you may be slow to me, and visa versa. This tweak isn't supposed to make IE "fast", just "faster" than before. It still won't be instantaneous. I consider FF to be the fastest, because I can load it down with themes, extensions, and opened tabs, and it still runs just dandy. I guess the only way to see which is better (IE or FF) will be to pit them against each other when IE7 is stable. But even then, IE isn't as skinable, extensionable, and all-around customizable as FF, so it still won't be a fair match. Firefox wins hands down. Nuff said.
  18. Delete it. Then it will be at least a few days before you'll be able to come back on here again and torment the n00bs.

    sound

When not using Winamp, does your audio work fine? If so, reinstall Winamp, as Winamp itself is most likely the problem. Do you have an actual sound card, or is it integrated? What is the manufacturer? If your audio doesn't work at all, then Winamp is right, and you should reinstall your drivers. I just finished building a new computer yesterday, and the motheraboard had built-in AC97 audio. I installed the drivers that came with it on a disk and the audio worked fine. Then I went onto Windows Updates, and it found updated drivers which it installed. After rebooting, the audio no longer worked! stupid Windows So what I ended up having to do was go onto the manufacturer's website and download/install the drivers, and viola! Problem solved. Have you recently updated your audio drivers, either manually or with Windows Updates? That could be your problem. And by the way, Eldmannen, you're a butt.
  20. Google already has a phishing site extension that is supposed to alert you. So most likely, that will just be integrated right into FF. I do agree that optimizations and less memory usage should be priorities. I think the biggest reason FF is having an antiphishing filter added in is to compete with IE7's phishing filter. IE went and stole all of FF's features, so I guess FF just wants to re-even things up. Although, of course, it still won't be an even match, because it will be a long time before IE7 becomes even remotely as stable as Mozilla Firefox!
  21. Did you try reinstalling it like the message said to? Perhaps some other app accidently removed this file. Even though your scanning and updating seem to work, other parts of Spybot S & D may cease to work properly, such as the TeaTimer or the SDHelper. Also, I would highly doubt that you can fix this with MSCONFIG. Were you referring to the Startup tab entries? If so, the only reason Spybot would have one listed is if: 1. You have the TeaTimer turned on or 2. If you ran a scan where Spybot couldn't remove anything, and you need to restart so that it can scan again on startup In both cases, you would not want to turn these off via MSCONFIG anyway. You can turn off the TeaTimer in Spybot, and if you have a scan set for startup, you definitely don't want to disable that! Let me know what happens after reinstalling Spybot S & D.
  22. I have a couple suggestions, although I haven't tested the first one out yet: Are the files that you put in that folder read-only? To check this, right-click one of the files and select Properties. At the bottom of the window that appears, there should be 'Attributes:' such as Read-only and Hidden listed. If the Read-only box is checked, try unchecking it, applying the change, choosing OK, and then running CCleaner again. Also, you must make sure that the 'Custom Files and Folders' box is checked before you select Run Cleaner. This box can be found by clicking and looking at the bottom of the list of checkboxes under Advanced. If it isn't checked, CCleaner will ignore any files/folders that you specified. Let me know if these fix the problem. If not, I'll try to think of something else.
