    Ubuntu

Login123 an expert I am not, had a look and not sure where it went off the rails, hence the reason I decided that when it came to a permanent install of a Linux flavor of some description I went for the app in my last post, info on using the "Ubuntu installer" WUBI http://wubi-installer.org/ Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier! Wubi is Safe You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application. Wubi is free of spyware and malware, and being open source, anyone can verify that. Wubi is Discrete Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application. So Login123 the process I ended up using was: P4 - 2.8Ghz 1.5GIG RAM, NVIDIA 256MB RAM, 2 physical HD's, CD/DVD - no printer at this stage (will try to use Canon MF4150 across the network HD_0 has 3 partitions: partition 1 - win7, partition 2 Data for win7 & XP Pro, partition 3 Movies HD_1 has 3 partitions: partition 1 - XP Pro, partition 2 Empty, partition 3 Ubuntu Installed win7 first, disconnected HD_0 and installed XP Pro 2nd, re connected both HD's - boot from HD_0 win7 and then installed "Easy BCD" free boot loader. Configured boot loader to offer win7 as first boot followed by XP. I then launched "Wibi Ubuntu installer" with the Ubuntu 10.04 CD in the CD bay, the Wubi immediately located it, 25 minutes later after following the Ubuntu instructions and reading it's slide show during the installation procedure, removed the CD, and went for the big "RE-Boot" AND BINGO there it was, I was offered a boot up screen choice of: Win7 / XP / Ubuntu. I then proceeded to boot into each OS, use & test (apps, Internet, e-mail etc.) all worked very well. Ubuntu operating this way saw a minor reduction in operating speed of about 5% slower than Live CD Puppy5 running from RAM (which I tested, remembering I did not install Puppy5 on the HD, it runs from RAM and a single configuration file stored on the HD. So now I look forward to learning Linux (boot to Ubuntu OR Live CD with Puppy5), experimenting with Win7 and falling back on XP Pro all on a test box therefore protecting my every day business PC. I also like you Login123 have a Macrium full partition image back up of Win7 and XP Pro which I have had to use several times just to get to this point in time. If you have 2 physical HD's why not give the above ago............let us know.

Login123 I just spotted this, worth a read...........I will probably download and try on a test box. Install Ubuntu from inside Windows

My experience with Ubuntu which I downloaded twice (last one yesterday Ver 10.04) both resulted in a "unrecoverable error" message.........who knows I was not able to solve and moved on. (The PC is a dual boot Win7 & XP Pro). The miniature DSL (50 MB) Linux works very well (carry that with me and use when on-site working on suspect laptops)and Puppy 5 is nothing short of brilliant. Indeed I am typing this reply login123 under a Puppy 5 boot on the Dual boot PC with no problems at all. Sound works well, screen resolution choices same as Windows, the "Pnethood SAMBA Shares" application gives me access to all 4 other PC's on the network (3 Windows boxes and my mates Linux Debian Movie File Server). I managed to download Thunderbird via Firefox browser (included) and installed, configured etc. all working well. Also "WINE" works very well, so far I have tried, wine notepad, wine IE Explore, wine file manager etc. Puppy 5 ships with it's own set of business, Graphics etc. Apps. Excellent way to experience / learn Linux without stuffing my Win 7 / XP Pro box. I have not only been able to access and watch avi movies across the network on the Puppy 5 OS but it seems to access and commence the movie much faster than Windows OS. It also shipps with it's own CD / DVD Blu-Ray burning app, which I have not tried yet. The speed at which it boots to the desktop is about 20 seconds as Puppy 5 creates (if you choose to) a "Lupusave-username.2FJ file (written to the HD) which seems stores all the necessary information (keyboard, time date format, location, GMT, network, sound, video Res and apps) that you have since installed, and as Hazelnut stated you can even remove the Puppy 5 boot CD enabling you full access to your CD / DVD bay. So good luck hope all works well for you as it did for me, I would be interested to hear how you go.

Redhawk you nailed it, what a suggestion, I have just finished downloading and am now running (typing this under a DSL Live CD boot) and what a great little BIG bang bit of OS. Other than geting one used to a different OS, it is bloody fast, thanks for the suggestion. PS: whilst I have 2 other Linux live CD OS that I sometimes use this one has the advantage that running from an 80mm CD that fits in my top shirt pocket (particularly now that I have stopped smoking) DSL will travel with me daily with my usual USB sticks.
  5. Yes ident there is, take a couple of minutes and go to my "recently commenced" photo - cartoon site. http:///tasderwent.posterous.com/
  6. Yes Squire a normal full size hard drive and several years ago they (we) were using 20 & 40GIG laptop HD's.
  7. I for one would rather use a fishing rod.
  8. Hazelnut as one who has spent some 20 years (3 years ago) in this industry with Canon & Oc? you are correct, we should all be worried about residual information not erased from MFD's (multifunction devices) i.e. the digital photocopier that has been a copier / network printer / network fax / network scanner (scan to e-mail, fax, PDF etc.) for the last 10 + years. As a member of technical support within these industries responsible for technical pre & post sales support, installations, training and disposal many client's simply do not follow documented advice from the manufacturers. All data should be erased from the MFD prior to disposal. Should the MDF be traded in on new equipment the companies I worked for always erased data on traded MFD's on arrival. Where the client decided not to trade in the MFD and sold them on the open market, 90% of these MDF's were sold with hard drives full of data for anyone to access. As Sharp said in the video "if you don't take control of your data someone else will". Remember these MFD's can be purchased with data erasure software. Many Government Departments will remove & destroy the internal hard drives prior to disposal similar to their PC disposal procedure. With the above in mind, my own MFD (Canon MF4150) does not have an internal hard drive, everything is held in RAM and flushed on power down. The down side is that my MFD is a little slower and does not contain as many "bells & whistles" as the big end of town.
  9. Well here goes nothing hope it all works, my May desktop from my newly installed Linux OS called "gNewSense". Have managed to get it dual booting with Win 7, (have already posted May desktop for it). Now on to the "Linux learning curve".
  10. Fantastic bit of Kit, I wonder if I can get a 4 wheel version, Hi - Low range 5 speed & dual fuel!!!!!! OPPS I forgot, what about a roof? On a serious note it will be a great step in the right direction for the handicapped & I'm sure the peddles are adjustable.

    Spring

So just where is it that you live? and yes Ishi that is bloody hot and 3 years ago I lived in Canberra where in summertime during the months of December to March (approx) the normal daytime temp was normally somewhere between 32º to 41º and night time it would drop to about 24º - 27º. Winter time saw min temps at -4º and max at +12º. I must admit I ended up installing a reverse cycle air conditioner which made the extremes of summer and winter bearable, then solved the problem of the extremes by moving to Hobart Tasmania, where temps are much more temperate Winter daytime about 15º summer about 24º approx.

Yes the climate is changing, BUT which way....One minute it's getting hotter, now it's getting colder, it's also dryer, bugger me it's now the wettest it's been for........... Well folks way down here in Hobart Tasmania (towards the bottom of the Globe) the Sun is shinning bright, no wind, almost no cloud at all, min last night was 7?C and we are heading for a max of 15?C, it's a great day to be alive. We also have a saying down here in TAS, "if you don't like the weather, come back in 1/2 an hour". Tasmania definitely experiences "four seasons in 1 day".
  13. What a great link Hazelnut, many thanks, I have printed to PDF for future reference. I am a Windows XP firewall & MSE user also with no issues; they seem to work well with Avast & Spybot.
  14. After reading everyone's comments on this post,I not only agree with you Anomaly but wish to add the following with reference to "working with" and "in the real world". In a previous life (4 years ago) working as a Pre Press Colour Specialist (for 10 years) my job was not only to solve "on site" issues with Mac & PC user sites, meant I had to understand both OS platforms and their Pre Press software apps. I was also involved in running showroom demonstrations, assisting in the sale, network installation/ connectivity and user training of my manufactures input / output network devices. The upshot was I had to learn, understand and use both Mac's (Pre OSX & OSX all Versions) and PC's (98, to XP workstations + MS & Novel Servers) and all software associated with the print / publishing industry. Mac was easier to learn, demonstrate my manufacturer's product, complete user training, easier to locate and fix user / colour / software application issues. There were many user organizations that managed to understand and get the best of both worlds. i.e. Run Mac OSX and XP on the same Computer at the same time (concurrently) and simply "switch" at will. Sure that Mac plenty of RAM and several hard drives but what a solution. No job was difficult to accept and output, irrespective of software or OS, given that in the commercial world 98% of the Pre Press industry use either Mac or PC. Observation of users after 10 years. The majority of Mac users will attempt to learn the Windows environment and continue to use both, HOWEVER PC user simply refuse to consider trying the Mac OS, those that do (minority) usually change their opinion of Mac once learned. We are not talking "conversion" but attempting to get those users to become users of both and raise their importance within the industry. Same can be said for learning other operating systems albeit not a lot of Linux based users in the commercial world yet other that Server based, which in the last 12 months of my job I needed to learn and use (which I did) Sorry for the long response folks.
  15. One movie I would promote is Beneath Hill 60 my Wife and I have just returned from a Sunday afternoon viewing at our local movie theater and tells a true story about our Grandfathers that did make a difference in the scheme of life. The extraordinary true story of Oliver Woodward. It's 1916 and Woodward must tear himself from his new young love to go to the mud and carnage of the Western Front. Deep beneath the German lines. Woodward and his secret platoon of Australian tunnelers fight to defend a leaking, labyrinthine tunnel system packed with enough high explosives to change the course of the War.

  18. ident many thanks for the suggestion, I shall now go and have a look at Adobe After Effects as it is Video editing SW that I am looking for instead of continue use of TMPGEnc. cc1 thank you for your suggestions, however my capture SW is OK as the Winfast TV capture card comes with it's own SW for capturing in MPG or TS file formats and it also handles HDTV captures (ships with a AC3 codec). However I shall have a look at XmediaRecode as it may be an alternative to TMPGEnc for editing.
  19. I capture a lot of free to air TV programs, movies etc. then edit with TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress with reasonable success. TMPGEnc then converts the edited MPG capture to AVI file format (DIVX encoded) for replay via networked MG35 to my 16:9 LCD TV located in the loungeroom. Other than VideoStudio Ver 9.0 which I have stopped using can anybody suggest an alternative to TMPGEnc that you have used and would recommend.
  20. Speccy does not show / acknowledge the presence of my Video Capture Device a Winfast 2000 H. Perhaps this is normal and Speccy is not meant to detect these types of devices. Does anyone know?
  21. Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T. (sometimes written as SMART), is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures. When a failure is anticipated by S.M.A.R.T., the drive is typically replaced and returned to the manufacturer, who uses these dead drives to discover where faults lie and how to prevent them from recurring on the next generation of hard disk drives.

    Well Done :)

Many thanks and keep up the good work.............always Piriform
  23. Point taken Aethec but I do not have to reinstall Windows or apps as I backup daily (Macrium Reflect) drive C system and apps, 40.6GB, backup file is only 33.6GB, last time I had to resort to a restore some 4 months ago, the whole process only took 37 minutes. However I do retain System Restore on drive C & D on this mission critical PC, why? I really do not know as it has been years since I have used system restore, back-ups preferred. The data drive is a separate physical hard drive (100GB)total 28GB of data which is also backed up daily. Both these back-ups are located on an external 500GB USB HD. As far as free space is concerned down here in AUS. I think HD space is cheap...........e.g. 1.5TB Samsung $139.00, 1TB $120.00
