  1. There are many factors that could influence the performance of wireless connectivity: -poor signal strength due to faulty router (unlikely) -transmitter and receiver antenna badly positioned -nearby wireless router(s) using the same channel causing interference -2.4GHz cordless phones (or other devices that are using this frequency i.e video senders) First inspect the signal strength of your wireless connection and adjust the position of your router and the antenna to try and improve things. Also if your neighbourhood has a lot of wireless routers try changing your transmitter channel to avoid nearby interference. To inspect what channels are in use you'll need something like NetStumbler - http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ (unfortunately the main download link is down today) Richard S.
  2. It depends on your definition of freespace I personally see it as the space that can be used to store large files without causing fragmentation. If your files are scattered around the disk but not fragmented then you're making it harder for Windows to store files contiguously resulting in higher file fragmentation than if you defragged freespace. Personally I never really bother with it however it can be useful in situations such as having low disk space and trying to defragging c:\pagefile.sys Richard S.
  3. It depends on whether you use Defraggler's option "Defrag freespace" or "Defrag freespace (allow fragmentation). Obviously if you use the latter option then yes fragmentation would increase but I'm talking about defrag freespace (don't fragment). Considering a file system which is 50% used but due to fragmentation data is scattered from start to end of the disk at 80% If you defrag freespace then 80% of scatter maybe compacted down to 50% but the problem remains that files are still badly fragmented. When you defrag files the Windows API looks for areas of the disk that contains enough contiguous space for them to be moved into. It's this moving of files as part of the defragging process that create gaps and impact on the overall percentage of freespace. Now if you defragged first all file fragments are aligned and there are gaps between each file. You defrag freespace, Defraggler (I assume) looks at all the gap sizes and calculates the best files to be moved into these spaces. Once Defragger has finished the task all files are contiguous and the gaps are filled to the best of what it could find to fill them. It's never possible to fill the gaps completely since it's unlikely to find files to fit them exactly, this is why Defragger has the option "Defrag freespace (allow fragmentation)" filling the gaps at the expense of fragmentation. So as you can see for a smarter organised file system you should always defrag first then defrag freespace later not the other way around. Richard S.
  4. You must defrag before defragging freespace, the reason being files that are defragged are moved about to become contiguous this process would ultimately lead to a decrease in freespace. Richard S.
  5. Are you sure it's defragging $MFT I thought this file wasn't touchable even with an offline file system?? Richard S.
  6. Looks like a library bug I cannot see any real reason to drop Windows 2000 support. Richard S.

    Video problem

Microsoft does not provide codec support for mpeg4/divx you'll need to install something like FFDShow - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm Richard S.
  8. A file can only be defragged providing there is sufficient contiguous freespace equal to or more than the original file size. In your case you do not have 1.4TB of free space to move your 1.4TB file therefore you will not be able to defrag it. Richard S.
  9. Run the Windows 98 defragging tool and this should make deleted files unrecoverable / invisible. Richard S.
  10. What error message do you get?? Richard S.
  11. What was the name?? Richard S.
  12. If your machine runs as expected, applications load correctly without errors then there is nothing wrong with your PC. Registry cleaners are usually full of crap and not worth messing up you computer with unless you really do have a serious problem. As for CCleaner vs Registry CleanFix 2007 it's a coder's preference to decided what's serious and what's not, that doesn't mean that either program is right though. Richard S.
  13. SVI is indeed where Windows stores restore points, driver roll backs, registry snapshots etc. Since this gets constantly updated there is probably very little point trying to defrag it. If you still want to purge the SVI folder just turning off and turning on system restore. Richard S.
  14. Windows does accept filenames or folders with spaces however you must enclosed them in quotes otherwise the text after the space would be taken as a program parameter. Richard S.

    Speccy v1.06

It would be a real enhancement if Speccy was capable of displaying my RAM summary correctly. I have 1.25GB of RAM (1080MB) not 1.3GB which is a coding error due to fact that Speccy uses 1 decimal point rounding instead of 2. If I was to calculate 1.3GB back into MB this would be 1.3 * 1024 = 1331.2, (1331.2 - 1080) = 251.2MB more RAM I don't actually have. I have reported this mistake from the begging of Speccy Beta but since neither Mr G or the other coders have acknowledged the problem should I try emailing instead?? Richard S.
  16. I guess not since your system is in perfect working order Richard S.

    Reg Errors?

As the old saying goes: "what ain't broke don't fix" the same should be said about the System Registry. Most registry cleaners / fixers are full of BS you should only consider repairing if you have a software problem that could be registry related. Richard S.
  18. How about removing Defraggler's inability to touch the pagefile.sys file while running from WinPE / BartPE?? Since this file isn't locked by the Operating System (BartPE / Hiren's Mini XP) there is no legitimate reason why Defraggler shouldn't attempt to defrag it or even test for read/write capability. Sysinternals Contig has no such problems defragging pagefile.sys nor does Defraggler if I patch the executable. Richard S.
  19. Have you checked your RAM and hard drive for bad sectors yet?? Richard S.
  20. Sounds like you have RAM problems or bad sectors - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc957628.aspx Run memtest86 - http://www.memtest86.com/ and then chkdsk.exe /r Richard S.
  21. "License: FREE until Friday" - does this mean I have to install before Friday and it's free forever or it only work until Friday for free?? Richard S.

    System Restore

What do you mean by faulty DirectX update?? Have you tried re-installing DirectX or ran the uninstaller from "Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs"?? Richard S.
