  1. Virtualdub freeware video capture software - http://www.virtualdub.org/ SuperWebcam can record video but without sound - http://www.superwebcam.com/ FFDShow mpeg-4 video codec (useful for creating compressed AVIs) - http://www.free-codecs.com/ffdshow_download.htm Richard S.
  2. If you're referring to the deleted filename entries they cannot be removed or hidden using Recuva you can however do this with Eraser The latest version is 6.0.8.2273 but I prefer 5.8.8 because is less bloated and doesn't require dot.net Richard S.
  3. Just like Solid State Drives (SSD) it's not advisable to defrag USB flash drives because of limited write cycles before becoming faulty. Swap files are also a bad idea because you're effectively increasing defragging time by doubling the number of reads / writes (copy to swap, defrag swap). You also increases the risk of data loss because there would be no protection against a system crash or power failure. The fact is you cannot speed up the defragging process the Defragging API is inherently slow due to physical speed of the drive head / seek and the fact that file clusters are moved individual from one area of the disk to another. Copying files on the other hand would always be faster because data is read and written in larger chunks not as individual clusters. Richard S.
  4. Diskeeper sounds like a drive killer to me, I would personally have my file system fragmented rather than have some program hammering my hard drive in the background for the sake of a few clusters. File fragmentation is something that's unavoidable but modern drives are so fast that I doubt anyone would really notice a performance difference from a fragmented file system to a defragged one. Richard S.
  5. I dunno about error message generators but Windows RG is quite funny - http://www.jamesweb.co.uk/windowsrg Richard S.
  6. Speccy communicates with the piriform website to obtain your "External IP address". There is no official way to prevent this however you can stop further communication by adding "127.0.0.1 speccy.piriform.com" (without quotes) to your Windows host file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts). Richard S.
  7. If it's not in add-ons then perhaps you need to customise your toolbar?? (view, toolbars, customize...) Richard S.
  8. This wouldn't be possible because not all applications share the same method or location for storing keys. In some cases the keys are intentionally hidden or encrypted to prevent thief or reverse engineering. Richard S.
  9. Run "chkdsk.exe /f" (without quotes) and reboot your computer it's possible you have file system errors that caused the BSOD. Richard S.
  10. Defraggler had supported Windows 2000 in the past so it seems hard to believe that there is now a compatibility issue using the defragging API. It seems more likely to be problem with an add-on library used for Defraggler which doesn't support Windows 2000. Until one of the coders would care to speak up it's still unclear whether dropping Windows 2000 was intentional or not. Richard S.

    PSU info

I don't think this information is available via WMI queries or by any other means. If you want to know the PSU rating then you must open the casing of your computer and check the labelling. Richard S.
  12. photobucket has always worked for me. Richard S.
  13. Slow file transfer with high CPU usage / interrupts could indicate the IDE controller is operating in PIO mode (not DMA) or the hard drive is pending failure. Check your drive's SMART status using Speccy (or HD Tune) and see if anything looks suspicious i.e. Reallocated Sector Count > 0. Richard S.
  14. Why do you want to send pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys to the end of the disk this area is known for poor read/write performance?? As for lack of defragging the 2 files they're probably being ignored by Defraggler or are currently locked by the Operating System. If you want to defrag pagefile.sys you could use Sysinternals PageDefrag although this won't move large files to the end of the disk. Richard S.
  15. Never recover files to drive you're recovering from (unless it's 1 file) because you increase the risk of corrupting your deleted files. As for repairing the operating system you're probably better off re-installing, all version of Windows has a repair or re-install option so you can keep your old files intact. What version of Windows was the machine running?? Richard S.
  16. Choppy video / behaviour would suggest your CPU is being pegged either by background applications, high interrupts (i.e. PIO mode IDE transfer mode), poorly written drivers or poorly coded software like Adobe Flash as used in the web site v3.co.uk. Are you using XP generic video drivers or using the ones supplied with your graphics card?? How fast is your Pentium 4 CPU?? Richard S.
  17. You should never defrag a SSD drive unless you want to send it to an early grave. Richard S.
  18. Excellent doesn't mean 100% correct it an indication that clusters belonging to deleted files are not in use and thus have a higher change for successful recovery. Richard S.
  19. This video is full of BS I'm not even sure if this was ever produced or endorsed by Microsoft. If companies are having technical problems with Open Office they shouldn't employ sheep to operate computers. Richard S.
  20. 64 million hits from the official page (not the link Dennis posted) that's got to be one of the most watch video on YouTube. Some interesting info about the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AdQo1qBy1E Richard S.
  21. Just because you have plenty of contiguous freespace doesn't necessarily mean it would get used the way you want it. Windows isn't particularly smart when it comes to copying files hence the need to occasionally defrag the file system. As for prevention I doubt this would be possible but defragging freespace should help to minimise fragmentation. If you use your shared drive for other files you might be better off having a dedicated partition purely for backups. Richard S.
  22. It's no good quoting pointless statistics without analysing the data, i.e. looking at the file list finding what's fragmented. Defraggler is known to cause Vista/Win 7 to create a restore points for System Restore stored in "C:\System Volume Information". If you clear out your restore points you might find that the level of fragmentation to be a lot less than previous. Richard S.
  23. I do defrag freespace I just don't make a habit of it because it's time consuming and doesn't offer really any performance benefits. It does however help to defrag large files such as c:\pagefile.sys that would normally fail if you're low on contiguous freespace. Richard S.
  24. Could you be more specific like error messages, screen dumps?? Have you tried opening hotmail from another browser and / or another computer?? Richard S.
  25. Are you running any anti-virus / HIPS software?? Richard S.
