  1. Are these two of the characters: ϋ Σ ? If so it's Greek. The square is probably the "unknown symbol" placeholder. Since Σ is "sigma", the S may be the same, but get another opinion ... I didn't even know Greek characters could be in the registry.
  2. CCleaner identifies that issue on my computer intermittently. ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) Cache entries are automatically created and deleted when required during network TCP/IP sessions. I've always assumed CCleaner is finding a reference to a deleted entry. You can fix them or ignore them ... the cache size appears to be very limited so they don't seem to accumulate to any significant size.
  3. It's a full-size truck in the background. If you look carefully, the upper right corner of the cab is obscured by the pavement supporting the two people. The truck is close to the pouring water.
  4. I'm not sure about US law. AFAIK, US law generally allows private use/backup copies of legally purchased music and games/software but the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states that it's illegal to break the CSS copy-protection mechanism employed by most commercial DVD movies and seems to indicate that you cannot make a copy of a commercial DVD even for personal use. I don't know if your courts have made a definitive ruling on the matter. You could ask a lawyer or your local librarian. I'm not kidding ... this is a major issue for libraries because they, like you, want to backup lending materials in case of damage.
  5. Or did he run another app? I vaguely recall something about another cleaner app that has a Delete duplicate files which can really trash a computer by deleting the "duplicate" files required for individual user accounts.
  6. This actually varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Some countries explicitly allow backup copies provided they aren't used at the same time as the original. Also, in Canada it is legal to copy music for the private use of the person who makes the copy, but we have a levy on blank audio recording media to compensate authors, performers and makers who own copyright in eligible sound recordings being copied for private use.
  7. ??? "... used ccleaner to "clean" out my registry and delete duplicate files ..." Am I missing something? Where is that in CCleaner?
  8. I think you've got that reversed ... the new option cleans the Uninstaller, not the Hotfix. The question, then, is if there is any reason you would ever want to uninstall a specific Hotfix. I've been kicking that around and can't think of a situation. I haven't tested it yet myself but secure file deletion is supposed to overwrite the sectors formerly occupied by cleaned files so that they can't be recovered.
  9. A couple of items regarding Microsoft Office: Office 2000 is the one version missing (Office 97, XP and 2003 are all handled) winapp.ini uses the reg entries "Office10" to check for Office XP, and "Office11" to check for Office 2003. The problem is, if you have Office 2003, even on PC's that have never had Office XP, you have both "Office10" and "Office11" (I don't know why). The Application list shows both XP and 2003 when you only have the latter.

Raising it's ugly head again: Feds seek Google data in child porn case Report: Search firm resists request for records, saying the Justice Department is overreaching. January 20, 2006: 9:52 AM EST NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The Justice Department is asking Internet search giant Google to turn over search records in an effort to defend a child pornography law, according to a report published Thursday. Google, which refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the search records, cited user privacy and maintaining company secrets for not complying with the government, the paper reported. The records in question include 1 million random Web addresses and a list of all Google searches from any one-week period, according to the paper. The government said that other, unnamed Internet search firms had agreed to turn over the requested information, but not Google, the Mercury News reported. I'm not defending child porn, but "1 million random Web addresses ... all Google searches" just doesn't seem reasonable.
  11. I suspect the Tasks may be in the C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKxx folder of the sender and/or recipient at some point and getting wiped by CCLeaner. This may be difficult to verify because the "xx" is a different number for each user and is a very hidden folder (normally will not display even if you disable all the "Hide" settings in Windows Explorer). There may be an easier way but: Open an e-mail with an attachment. Open (don't Save at this point, this will probably offer My Documents as the save location) the attachment and then, in whatever application, click File save as. The OLKxx folder for your user account should be the default save location. You now have the exact file path and should be able to test what happens when you assign a task, run CCleaner, etc.
  12. Is everyone with whom you're working on the same Microsoft Exchange Server? Is everyone always connected and have Send/Receive settings on "Send immediately"?
  13. Is it possible you enabled Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security > Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed ?

    Question

According to the CCleaner winapp.ini file, the registry key that triggers EZ Antivrus to be listed in the Applications list is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\Anti-Virus
  15. I saw that episode ... they were testing positive for hours after eating the bagels.

    Foxit Reader

Fair enough. We just frequent different neighbourhoods so to speak. I have to use a lot of technical reference documents which are in PDF and most of my work is published in PDF.

Just curious ... how do you manage given that so much material on the internet is PDF?
  18. I recommend you uninstall QuickTime completely and install QuickTime Standalone (the version without iTunes).
  19. If you mean the history drop-down in Google Toolbar, just deselect Toolbar Options > Search > Save the search history across browser sessions.
  20. Not necessarily. Silkworm wrote: The links may be to inaccesible files. One of my co-workers once copied a bunch of stuff to work on at home. They only copied a desktop shortcut to the network database (they didn't have a connection at home).
  21. rridgely, Silkworm didn't write .ink, he/she wrote .Ink but probably meant .lnk. I bet you Silkworm's looking at the shortcuts to the app's.
  22. No (except for booting up twice before remembering to change the BIOS to move the CD up the boot sequence ... D'oh!).
  23. The upgrade version allows either an upgrade or a clean install. For the latter you have to insert the old OS CD at one point to prove you qualify. If you opt for the clean install, you can format to NTFS. I just did one last week.
