Can't help you on that one ... I don't know what would lock you out if you're the administrator. Sorry if I wasn't clear ... the two possible solutions are independent. I had a glitch with one of my CD drives and only needed to do the first - disconnect, uninstall and reinstall. I never had to resort to the registry hack.

If you're referring to the icon for the internet shortcut in the address bar, the easy way is: Right-click the shortcut (in the IE dropdown or in the Favorites folder) and click Properties. In Properties, on the Web Document tab, click Change Icon. On the Change Icon panel, click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\CCleaner\cleaner.exe. Select the icon and click OK.

The joule rating is a measure of how much energy the clamping/diverting device (usually a metal oxide varistor) can absorb. It doesn't indicate the let through voltage of the entire unit. If you can find that spec, it's more useful. The surge strip can only protect against overvoltage. A UPS can also deal with noise, brown-outs and outages. So the choice depends on cost vs. what risks you face. I use an APC Back-UPS ES 500 and it's intervened several times in the last year for the last three categories but never for an overvoltage. A friend of mine uses the RS 1200 and reports much the same (he has two PC's plugged into it). APC has a selector on their site that let's you estimate power requirements and suggests a model.

Could your e-mail service have changed their settings? Some have a habit of rolling out new security features with user settings enabled by default. Or is it possible that the sender(s) or their e-mail service have changed their settings? You could have someone who knows their outgoing isn't filtered send you a link (I can't from where I am because my outgoing is filtered). Then check your e-mail account using web access to bypass OE. If it's OK, then check your e-mail using OE. That would help determine where the problem lies.

It may be security. Some systems classify internet shortcut links as dangerous attachments. They'll let the text through but the underlying URL is stripped out. In my office, my settings don't matter, central security determines what's allowed.

Why not use CCleaner? ... or did I misunderstand what you're trying to do.

Which version of Word is he using? ... and did he have AutoRecover / automatic backup enabled? Recent Documents may not work because the shortcut is damaged or the .doc file is lost, but there may be a .wbk backup copy. If it's Word 2003, anything remotely salvageable should be accessible through the Document Recovery panel.

I'm not sure what you mean about the index.dat file in C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\OfflineCache. Is there a setting that causes CCleaner to select this? Obviously, I want to avoid accidentally using it. When I run CCleaner with "Delete index.dat files" it's never selected that index.dat ... only those in Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History.

Sorry I couldn't help with your main problem but some info ... I believe WindowsMedia.com is the default Online Store for the US version of WMP10. With the Canadian version, it was Napster's Canadian site. I think it's because of differing copyright laws. D'Oh! - Did you ever have these features work? When WMP10 was first released, I seem to recall there were different versions by country. Could it be that these features aren't supposed to work for that reason?

I hadn't used that setting since updating to v1.25 so I just tried it. Worked fine for me. Did you tick "Recently Typed URLs" and then click "Run Cleaner"? Any chance you are seeing autocomplete entries from other than typed URLs?

Doesn't appear to be a general bug. I tested on WinXP Home SP2 and get the same reg entries when I run "Delete index.dat files" but they clear after reboot.

Just to make sure ... as a final step, did you see a panel like this and click either "Fix Issue" or "Fix All Selected Issues"?

Any application that can use the internet (e.g., to update) must contain scripts and addresses. This could be code right in the app, a simple additional executable, or a complete separate application. WMP obviously uses IE as an interface but I have some updaters that don't. Did work?

Index.dat files don't go away permanently. When they are emptied or deleted, they start over and accumulate data again. Don't worry that a file size is reported for the index.dat. There is a minimum file size even when empty (usually a multiple of 16 KB, but IE5 may differ).

Sounds like the whole internet component has been damaged. Consider uninstalling and installing.

You can inadvertently pick up Viewpoint Media Player and/or Manager at the sites of several major automakers and electronics manufacturers. It does not seem to trigger a warning the way most such players do.

A couple of possibilities: 1. Which version of CCleaner are you using? This problem was reported for v1.23 but appeared to have been fixed in v1.24. 2. Check to see if the [username]@webaddress[1].txt files in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Cookies mirror the Cookie:[username]@webaddress/ entries in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files The two lists normally match each other (except for the difference in syntax), but can go out of synch for reasons unrelated to CCleaner. If you have .txt's in the first folder for which there are no corresponding entries in the second folder, they won't display in the CCleaner Options > Cookies windows. Only the "paired" cookies will display.

This is a longshot but ... is it possible that you have cleared all Online Stores or their url's? View > Online Stores I think at least one has to be defined.
