  1. If you're worried about the update interval you don't have to solely rely upon MVPS, I don't. There's also others such as Dan Pollock's, MalwareDomainList, and Peter Lowe's that I use.
  2. That issue crops up every now and then, I doubt that it's an issue with Microsoft Surface Pro since it's going to be using consumer based disk drives anyone could buy. It's possibly a bug in CCleaner or possibly due to some hard disk or SSD error. When it's been reported in the past I don't off hand remember anyone stating they've ran a scan with ChkDsk to see if that remedies the issue. So, something that "may be worth trying" is the run a thorough scan with ChkDsk using chkdsk /r on the affected systems to see if that changes anything.
  3. For clarification nobody on the mod team works for Piriform/Avast! All mods are normal users of the software that have volunteered for years to keep the forum tidy.
  4. If the files are small it's been my experience that it will be extremely slow to secure delete them especially if attempting to remove allot of them. It could even take a long time to delete them normally for instance from the Recycle Bin without using any secure delete. That's possibly due to how slow random read+write speeds are on a spinning hard disk drive and then the accompanied MFT changes/updating as Augeas mentioned -- use CrystalDiskMark and look at 4Kib Q1T1 to see just how slow an HDD is in that regard with small files. A faster solution depending upon the capacity of the hard disk is to delete the files normally (still going to take a good amount of time), and then run CCleaner's Wipe Free Space.
  5. CCleaner is not known to damage WMI, otherwise the forum would be filled with complaints about it.
  6. Sorry I don't know why it, that's something perhaps the developers could answer if they chime in on this topic. My own guess would be it has to read values from allot of different drives instead of being made in particular for a specific drive brand and model, so perhaps that's why there will be anomalies/bugs. It's one of the reasons developers of such programs may need to borrow or loan drives from manufacturers!
  7. Try the Slim installer to see if it will work: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
  8. Also see here: https://www.ccleaner.com/docs/ccleaner/ccleaner-settings/choosing-which-cookies-to-keep
  9. That's why it's important to get the official SSD manufacturer's SSD drive management software, period! Most manufacturer's have an official freeware software available that can display the S.M.A.R.T. status, model, capacity, firmware version with ability to update the firmware, temperature, remaining life, and allow over-provisioning for endurance and performance that can extend the life of the drive. Edit: Your Kingston has a product verification page here: https://www.kingston.com/us/support/product_verification
  10. Why risk cleaning the Font cache at all?
  11. Well when we're all being spied upon by the operating systems themselves others follow suit. Whereas image in some alternate universe where Windows doesn't spy on us, and completely disables it in software that tries to.
  12. That's allot of faith that Windows is remotely that "smart", I don't think it is when dealing with an HDD otherwise defrag software wouldn't be needed. I wonder if the file placement could also be caused by the MFT Reserved Zone. I've noticed Windows has the ability to move where the MFT Reserved Zone is located after a reboot, some defrag software is able to display it after running an analysis by showing it as a colored area on the disk. And one defrag software in particular is able to ignore the MFT Reserved Zone which is undocumented in it and my preference, since Windows will just move the zone after a reboot.
  13. To my knowledge they have always automatically enabled Smart Cleaning (which used to be called something else previously and they've recently rebranded it). The only version of CCleaner that avoids Smart Cleaning altogether is the Portable ZIP version available at: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
  14. Special Note: Scroll to the end of this post for a ZIP download that contains inside it a .reg file that will automatically apply the fix for you. The ZIP download fix doesn't require any registry editing knowledge and is the easiest way to apply the fix. --------------------------------------------- Old obsolete manual instructions for the fix: To allow CCleaner to properly clean Edge without an error dialog displayed by CCleaner these keys must be present in the registry to prevent Edge from pre-loading, the keys do not exist by default and have to be created. 1. Copy the information in the code below, and paste it into an empty Notepad window. 2. Save the file in your documents folder using the following file name including the quotes: "Microsoft Edge Browser - Disable Pre-Loading.reg" 3. Double-click the .REG file, allow the UAC prompt, and then it will be imported. It's recommended that you restart your computer after importing the .REG file. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Microsoft Edge browser disable pre-loading after Windows 10 (October 2018 Update). ; This allows CCleaner to properly clean Microsoft Edge after Windows 10 (October 2018 Update). [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main] "AllowPrelaunch"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\TabPreloader] "AllowTabPreloading"=dword:00000000 --------------------------------------------- Then there's also this: Internet Explorer and Edge will typically (at least in my case) have no issue being cleaned if you do the following: 1. Start Microsoft Edge. 2. Immediately close Microsoft Edge. Side Note: Do not End Task Microsoft Edge from within Task Manager since doing that "may corrupt its databases." 3. Clean with CCleaner. It will spend a few seconds cleaning Internet Explorer however it should be able to successfully clean both it and Edge without any error text stating they're being skipped. --------------------------------------------- ZIP download automatic fix: To make this even easier, just download the attached ZIP archive named "MicrosoftEdgeBrowserDisablePreLoading_36992e405e1fd1501a0c2bf75ca146ba.zip" it contains the .REG file and a brief readme document. The MD5 hash of the download is included in the file name for verification. Simple instructions: Download it, unzip it, and finally run the included .reg file. 15. The Slim build was suggested because it's a freeware installer, and it doesn't have any 3rd party software included, and since the OP was already upset why even chance an install with the Standard build which could "mysteriously" install Avast Free Antivirus without any user consent. Edit: Which ever build you download make sure the file names and hashes match to confirm you have the correct downloaded file, you can confirm by looking at this official announcement post: https://forum.piriform.com/topic/53095-ccleaner-v5516939/ After getting the correct freeware installer you can disable that startup with Windows by doing the following: 1. Open CCleaner, and go into: Options > Smart Cleaning 2. Disable anything in Smart Cleaning that you don't want starting with Windows.
  16. Make sure you're only downloading CCleaner from the official site here: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds And then make sure you get the Slim build installer, the last download link on the page.
  17. That's why I warned my mother and told her not to select that in Disk Cleanup should she ever use it, since she downloads allot of paid for designs and takes forever to move them out of Downloads to a "safer" location.
  18. If only they'd patch old processors, but likely they won't.
  19. Looks like Microsoft is going to implement a patch to warn about selecting/using Downloads in Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10s-disk-cleanup-getting-a-new-warning-about-downloads-folder/
  20. I know it's just a feature request/suggestion but I'll have to disagree, reason being CCleaner is starting to get too many features bloating it over the years making it more complex and buggy, and I can only imagine the amount of bugs it would have if a full fledged antivirus existed inside it. Although they could direct you towards their owner Avast if you wanted an antivirus solution, and I think perhaps it would be perhaps easier and make more sense for Avast to integrate CCleaner a much smaller program into it either fully or to some degree.
  21. I'm pretty sure he has two on the gold laptop: "Grinch.jpg" and "Copy of Grinch.jpg".
  22. Although this topic is now locked, anyone reading this topic can make their own coherent opinion by reading the original located here: https://forum.piriform.com/topic/53034-keyboard-not-workingsometimes/
  23. I thought the same, it's been too long for that to still exist.
