Moderators mta Posted April 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted April 19, 2016 I've been noticing the same thing. in the last week I have rebuilt 3 Win7 PC's and on all of them, the Windows Updates just sit there and never progresses, even when left on overnight. I've not been too perturbed since those PC's would be getting updated to Win10 before too long. Willy2
- I have seen the same complaints on "Bleeping Computer". - Computers weren't finding updates. - CPU went "through the roof". I - at least - assume as a result of "Svchost" not being able to find what the proper updates should be. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/167/windows-7/ - I had different kind of "problems" with Windows Update. The first time one Update was listed under "Important Updates" and after some time it was moved to "Optional Updates". (I wasn't in a hurry to install those updates.). Then after say a month Windows Updates "changed its mind" again. Then Windows Update recently recommended that I install the same Update twice on my Win 7 system. One was listed under "Important Updates" and the other was listed under "Optional" updates. Weird stuff, those computers. login123
Trium, It seems the issue is caused by windows updates itself. And yes, in my opinion its related to microsoft's increasingly desperate effort to get everyone onto win 10. Some folks have mentioned exactly your issue, win 7 doesn't find updates, and then after a looooong wait it finally does. It is not enough to just hide an update anymore, like in the old days. Some of them get re-issued (same name, different version), some get replaced or superseded, some just seem to slow things up. My list of updates to ignore or uninstall has grown to over 50 items. There is so much inconsistency in the available information that I hesitate to post anything specific. I haven't actually tried any of the suggestions yet. The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-) Pssssst: ... It isn't really a cloud. Its a bunch of big, giant servers. I know that sounds like combining beer and cement to make a cheesecake, but there you have it. yes, i have the whole crap of beer and cement and in the end is no cheesecake. it is as nothing! (where is the crying smiley?) i have uninstalled all recommended updates for manually install and wait of the end of w10 for free and will hope it works after this time (i cant install IE11 --> neither offline installer nor online installer) windows tells me "i must have a update" but what one? and "IE8 is not supported on this page" Versions of CCleaner Cloud; Introduction Ccleaner Cloud; Ccleaner-->System-Requirements; Ccleaner FAQ´s; Ccleaner builds; Scheduling Ccleaner Free Es ist möglich, keine Fehler zu machen und dennoch zu verlieren. Willy2
- Warning: If you install this update & use the "Disk Clean Up" tool then you won't be able to remove the previous updates any more. - Ooops. Willy2
- This article http://www.infoworld.com/article/3058260/microsoft-windows/heres-how-to-significantly-speed-up-windows-7-scans-for-updates.html says that one needs to install 2 updates (KB 3138612 & KB 3145739) to fix WU. - "Mixing cement & beer to produce cheesecake" ??? I think Windows still contained (contains ???) one or more bugs when it came to handling Unicode characters and those bugs could/can throw WU "off the rails". - I followed the instructions of reply # 13 in this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616671/what-is-going-on-with-windows-update/ It recommended to install KB 3102810 and it worked on my (freshly) installed Win 7 SP 1 system to solve the high CPU problem. (But it also recommended to install KB 3138612). - On the topic "Installing IE 11": - I have a copy of the IE 11 stand alone installation program and a copy of the latest "Cumulative Security Update for IE 11". It allows me to install IE 11 even when WU "doesn't work". IE 11 checks whether or not a number of Updates are installed and will automatically download & install those Updates before it installs itself. Those updates are (I have those installation files as well): KB 2533623 KB 2639308 KB 2670838 KB 2729094 KB 2731771 KB 2786081 KB 2834140 KB 2882822 KB 2888049 In other words: I am less dependent on WU working properly. - The WU procedure/algorithm still has some (small ???) bugs. Although I re-installed Win 7 SP 1 (2 days ago) WU recommended that I should install SP 1 (Size: ~ 9 MB). But the Win 7 SP 1 stand alone update has a size of ~ 920 MB. And when I try to install that stand alone update (KB 976932) then I get a "SP 1 is already installed" error. Odd, very odd. - Computers are complicated things, right ? Willy2
- Based on info found on "BleepingComputer" I found something disturbing. It seems that if one hates to see that WU runs forever searching for updates then one needs install a new (security ???) patch every month, before one lets WU search for updates. - It suggests that one or more updates "break" something in Windows and that only a (security ???) patch can fix that broken part of WU/Windows. Quote from one "JohnC_21" (in bold italics) on june 15, 2016: It is getting to a point where every month requires a new update to be manually installed. See this post. This month's required update is KB3161664. In the future every month look at this site for the next update to manually download. http://wu.krelay.de/en/ Sources: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/610184/windows-update-taking-a-long-time-should-i-stop-it/ http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616671/what-is-going-on-with-windows-update http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/617418/windows-update-stalls-when-checking-for-updates/ http://wu.krelay.de/en/ System setup: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/gcNzIPEjEb0B2khOOBVCHPc A discussion always stimulates the braincells !!! Moderators mta Posted June 16, 2016 Moderators Share Posted June 16, 2016 (Is MS too busy with Win 10 ???). you'd have to guess that is partly a reason, but also, Windows 7 is now 18 months out of mainstream support. there has been 2 major OS releases since Windows 7 (3 if you count 8.1 as a sort of Windows 9). they are probably treating Win7 like their XP user base. Moderators nukecad Posted June 17, 2016 Moderators Share Posted June 17, 2016 Just to note that since Patch Tuesday this week my Windows 10 is also now having problems with Windows Updates. Takes ages 'Checking for Updates' every time. It just spent 10 minutes to find a Defender Definition update, installed it fast enough, then went back to 'Checking for Updates' for another 5 mins. Before Tuesday it would take less than a minute to do a Defender Definition update and the checks.. Windows Modules Installer Worker also keeps firing up and taking 60-70% CPU and 80-90% disk access for 15-20 mins at a time. I'm searching for solutions but most of the online suggestions involve turning off Automatic Updates, which you can't do in Win10 home. So maybe it's not Windows trying to push Win7 users to upgrade to Win10? Maybe its just Microsoft being incompetent (again)? EDIT (13:17) Well that seemed too easy, just ran Disk clean-up and used the option to Clean-up system files. Went and did another Windows Update and it found and installed another Defender Definition update in under a minute. I'll keep an eye on it, and the WMIU (I can hear that one start as the disk spins up). *** Out of Beer Error ->->-> Recovering Memory *** Worried about 'Tracking Files'?
