  2. I didn't see where you mentioned the size of the hard drive, but 7% free is not a good thing. And there's not a snowball's chance that it is contiguous. If you get your PC to boot again, try to get the free space down to at least 20%, Then do a disk defrag. It will probably take a long time. I would not recommend doing a defrag with 7% free.
  3. Try the simple stuff first. Disconnect the PC, open it up. Touch the metal case to discharge any static electricity. Clean out the dust bunnies. Make sure all connectors and cards are seated firmly. Don't forget the memory modules.
  4. A while back, I posted a link to BlueBeauty which featured some breath taking pictures of our planet taken from outer space. That link has been changed, but for those who missed it or if you just want to revisit, here you go. http://www.greatdanepromilitary.com/Blue%20Beauty/index.htm If you haven't visited the GreatDanePro website before, stay a spell and visit. I think you will be in for a treat. http://greatdanepro.com/
  5. I hope everyone had a good year and 2009 is even better. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
  6. Coming up fast on my 69th birthday. So old I remember the TRS-80, Osborne, Timex Sinclair, Coleco Adam, Commodore, Franlin, Kaypro, Heath/Zenith, Atari and other computers too numerous to mention. The Tandy 1000 was my first PC. So old I remember discrete components and vacuum tubes and working on electronic gear with a 125 watt soldering iron. So old I'm still amazed at what a single IC chip can do and the information available on the internet with a few keyboard stokes. Hope the next 69 years show as much progress.
  7. When you do start correcting registry issues, I would highly recommend answering Yes when CCleaner asks if you want to backup the changes. Many people don't and you can "hear" their agonized cries on this forum when they ask for help. CCleaner can make the backup in an eye blink and the .reg file will be there if you need to merge it to set things back to the status quo.
  8. Why do you think the monitor is not the problem? Perhaps you just happened to get a video problem that has nothing to do with your easyburner install. About a year ago My PC had the very same symtoms and the problem was the monitor. If you have a spare monitor or can beg or borrow one from a friend, try switching it out. If that doesn't fix it, do the same with the video card. Don't worry about not having the right drivers. Windows will load a generic. Just get a card compatible with your motherboard and one your PS can handle. If neither gambit works, at least you've eliminated the obvious, but its worth trying if you can find the spare hardware.
  9. Yes, Its called AT&T Internet Security Suite. (Provided by RadialPoint in Montreal) I also use it and it tagged the same file on my system as containing a virus. I went back to the previous version of CCleaner. Edited by Larry
  10. You did not mention which version OS you are using, but the only reason I can think of to choose FAT32 over NTFS, is if you have a multiboot system , where Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME is one of the boot options. These OS?s do not recognize NTFS volumes, and you would need FAT32 on any local drives accessed by them. In all other cases, for reliability, security, and efficiency, its NTFS.

    Error 1321

Take a look here http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/error-1321-help and see if this is a similar problem as yours. If so, there is another link in the middle of the page that will take you to a possible solution.
  12. Some sites are reporting this is a pre alpha build (trunk), and not a true alpha release. http://www.ghacks.net/2008/03/11/firefox-4-alpha/

  14. I don't use torrent but my reason for asking why you haven't done a version upgrade, was the possibility the new version might be DEP compatible and would not require a DEP exception. Granting DEP exceptions is risky because you are providing a work around for software that doesn't follow the rules when it accesses memory, since DEP prevents code execution in memory areas reserved for data.
  15. Kenny, Thanks for the link. I had previously done a forum search on uniblue, but it failed to tag those posts. As for Google, I had done that too, but I was interested in opinions of members of this forum and your link provided that. After looking closer at RegistryBooster, I found that you can only fix a few errors (16 or so) with the trial version before you have to buy. Not enough testing room for me.
  16. Anyone have any experience, opinions, gripes, complaints, or praises on Uniblue RegistryBooster?
  17. Is there any particular reason you are using version 1.1? I think 1.8.1 is the newest release.

    Robot dog

Negotiating that obstacle course and maintaining balance was impressive. They called it Big Dog but it looked and sounded more like a bee to me. Especially during the walk in the woods, with the buzzing sound and the packs in the front that resembled big multi-faceted eyes.
  19. You could try downloading from a different site. I just downloaded v 2.13 from Piriform and had no problems.
  20. Something else you could check. The next time the temp spikes and before unplugging the mouse receiver, check the current draw on the USB ports. Have all USB devices you use plugged in. If you are running Windows XP, right-click My Computer and choose Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click the USB Root Hub entry, and click the Power tab. Add up the amounts in the Power Required column. Your PC specs might be different but each port typically can handle 500ma. If there is something wrong with your ports it might show up as drawing too much power. Sometimes there are internal devices connected to a port, such as a touch pad that can increase the current draw of a particular port.
  21. Not surprising. The first level of tech support usually knows less than the person calling in. They are reading from a data base screen and know little beyond that. You typically have to escalate the problem to get someone who knows what they are talking about. And I?m not picking on Dell, that?s true of all of them. But that?s for another thread... As for the hot cpu, this is a long shot but the problem seem to follow your mouse receiver. If you have an old wired mouse around, use it for a couple of weeks and try other devices in your usb ports. If the problem doesn't come back, its the mouse receiver. If its the usb ports, it shouldn't matter what is plugged into them.

    IE 8

If you have SP3 and you installed SP3 without uninstalling IE first, that may be why. Microsoft's recommendation was to remove IE7 (PC would revert to IE6) before installing SP3 and then reinstaling IE7. Otherwise you can't remove IE without uninstalling SP3 and starting over. The problem carried over when you updated to IE8 beta 2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950719/en-us
  23. Even though some USB devices are described as 'hot swappable', imo its better to use the ?Safely Remove Hardware? tool, especially in the case of external hard drives. Frying hardware issues aside, you may have open files even though there is no evidence of disk activity. Windows may have cached data and be waiting for idle time to update the disk file. Using the Safely Remove Hardware tool will force any pending write operations.
  24. Yep, I agree. If you are not having a BIOS problem, let that sleeping dog lie. And If the BIOS update is a Beta, that's another reason to stay away. I would say the same about router firmware. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My Sony Bios is 4 years old and still going strong. My experience with ATI and HP has been good (so far). I upgrade my ATI driver every time a new comes out, although I now only install the basic driver rather than the full Catalyst Suite. My HP printer and scanner are old and the updates are now few and far between, but the ones I have installed gave no problems.
