You just know the parents would rather reformat her. It'd be quicker.

Almost as strange as when a 12 year old calls you 'mister' when you're 17.

As far as I can tell the only problem I have so far with Tweaked is that the volume control on my keyboard doesn't work.
I found out (by using my Original Config) that my HP keyboard volume control must've been disabled by a kill bit. You know, the ones we heard about today but downloaded a few days ago in Windows Update?
What timing. I tweak Services and they shove an unknown variable down our throat.

Back when I used Partition Magic 8 to divide my Cdrive, I found out something interesting.....that I completely forget now. So forget that.
I forget which 'direction' it is. Something along the lines of "you can change Fat32 to NTFS without reformatting, but to change NTFS to Fat32 you have to reformat". It was that, or the complete opposite. Like I said, I forget. I didn't commit it to memory. I'm using that portion of my brain for eye/hand coordination.

Heh, gotta be the filehippo or majorgeeks directX download. I always hated that. What good is a self extracting archive without an initial installer? Probably a condition of directX's policy for 3rd party vendors.

Nice of them to tell us what it does after we install it, eh?

I have a semi-stuffed Photobucket account and was just looking at ImageShack as a spare. But thanks, Hazelnut.

I'm not changing back to NTFS, I gave my reason in an earlier post. If/When I get a new machine it'll be either Vista (NTFS,WinFS) or Mac or Ubuntu. And I plan on keeping this old machine intact if I can. And if I really feel like splurging I'll also buy an old PC with Win98 SE.

Lookes a lot like Venice in the 2nd Tomb Raider game.

Well I dug into the Black Viper site the past few days and set up some multiple Service configurations for my PC. I have settings for Original Config (what I had already), Default (XPs' defaults only), Safe (only a few disabled), and Tweaked (a bunch more disabled). No way am I gonna try his Bare Bones setting.
As far as I can tell the only problem I have so far with Tweaked is that the volume control on my keyboard doesn't work. Luckily I already had the volume set on 1 so no audio firecrackers happened. My master Volume control works fine though.
What's neat is when my PC boots I have the 4 choices of configurations on the screen. I'm gonna leave it in Tweaked mode and see what happens along the way.

Nooooo thank you.

I haven't gotten junk mail in at least 2 years. Probably longer. Zero junk mail. Zero spam.
I feel so left out.

Let's not forget the real reason we're discussing all this.
Me. Everything is about me.

I don't use a Hosts File. I don't use a resident antispyware scanner. I don't use security tool bars such as Site Advisor. I don't use PAC Files. I don't use IP Block Lists. I don't immunize with programs like Spyware Blaster or Spy Bot S&D's immunize feature.
I do run an AV real time and use Sandboxie when going to unfamiliar sites. I have never had an infection on any of my current machines the oldest of which is now 4 years old. In fact my AV resident scanners have NEVER alerted me to anything. None of the AV or Antispyware scanners (and I have many) have detected a single thing other than the odd tracking cookie and odd false positive. I am on line probably 8 hours a day if not more. How do you explain this? Simple common sense when using a computer. Without that none of those protection apps will do $hit for you. I know people that totally screw their machines at least monthly. They have many of those apps installed and still they are not protected because there is no adequate protection for stupidity. I wouldn't do it but I could probably shut off my AV resident shield and still not get infected. It hasn't alert me to a single thing on any of my machines since installed.
There's several ways I could respond to this.
1) No, tell us how you really feel.
2) That makes 2 of us.
3) Yes! Yes! Oh God, yes!!!
4) See all the hassle you avoid by not surfing pr0n?
I had host programs for a while but I gave them up. The 2 or 3 sites I visit that are on host files are game sites. The other 10 billion are pr0n and I don't go there. I have Spybot just as a precaution but haven't found it useful in the past 4 years. Avast hasn't picked up anything so far. AVG did once or twice, years ago. AVZ poked at a false positive. MBAM hasn't found anything.
I think the best apps I have are CCleaner, RevoUninstaller, ERUNT, and RegSeeker. They've proved their worth.

Lordy. Somewhere on the Black Viper site I could have sworn I saw an article yesterday about maintaining & choosing Services Set-ups during reboots after you've set-up your Services preferences. Hell if I can find it now. Navigation there is screwed.
Anybody know?
Never mind. I found it.
See, all you have to do is post a question on a message board and in most cases you'll find the answer by yourself in 5 minutes.
That's why I posted the question.
Really.

I got that update an hour or so ago.

I have 512 ram.
I'm not changing it to NTFS (I do know NTFS is a much better system) because I remember why I changed it back to Fat32 in the first place. To run Cool Edit 2000. (Remember that thread I posted about CE2000?) I'm fine with Fat32. I'm no longer 32, but I'm still Fat.

Thanks for the concern but I'm not reformatting my drive (again). I was just stating the consequences of my PC after installing XP. The HP motherboard may be specifically geared for Win 98 & ME. It's an HP Pavillion 9895.

Now, if I was not so cheap, I would use Nod-32.
I agree, but I still use Avast.

Okay, who here an give me an unbiased report on the pros and cons about OpenDNS vs HostsMan and similar programs?

External Drive: NTFS or FAT32?

Yes, so I must've had it backwards. Converting Fat32 to NTFS has no data loss. But I really doubt Cool Edit 2000 will take kindly to NTFS. I dinna fix what ain't broke.
