  1. That's not the same as I found then.

    So you are saying that no update was showing at all but a software got updated anyway.

    Can you tell us what particular software it was that updated?
    Did you actually see that apps updating screens when you clicked 'Make it better', or did you just notice later that it had been updated?

    PS. Health Check uses it's own cleaning rules and so will often clear things that you have unticked in Custom Clean.
    I am not aware of Health Check clearing anything 'extra' that would not be cleared as long as it was ticked in Custom Clean.

  2. As far as I am aware you can only specify one destination drive to recover files to, so you will probably have to do the recovery in stages to fit the smaller SSDs, with a new scan each time.  (Moderator @Augeas knows this Recuva stuff better, so you may want to wait and see if he replies).

    It's probably safer/better to do it that way anyway, but it is going to take longer overall.

    Even if you hadn't formatted the drive you would have had to split the files up to fit onto the smaller SSD drives.

    These guides may help if you haven't already seen them:

    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045667371-Recovering-your-files#where-should-you-place-recovered-files--0-4

    And this may help you with sorting/selecting groups of files to recover to each SSD:

    Of course the optimum solution would have been to have a backup of the files on another drive or drives.
    If the 10TB drive has now been 'fixed' you could use that as a backup drive in future, (but personally I wouldn't fully trust a drive that had already failed once).

    This is the section that allows you to select the duplications and manually delete the chosen duplication(s). I then pressed the icon in the task bar only to find that it disappeared.

    Is this so? If not, can someone inform me how I can recover/access this?

    So you were using the Duplicate Finder.

    Your first issue is the part I've bolded in quote above - pressing/clicking the icon on the taskbar.
    It isn't a bug, that's simply the way that Windows is meant to behave with apps that are showing on the taskbar.

    Any app that is open will show an icon on the taskbar.

    Once an app is open then if you click it's taskbar icon whilst it is open it will minimise  to the taskbar.
    It is still open, it has just been temporarily moved off the screen - and clicking the icon again will restore it exactly as it was.
    (Give it a go with any app that you have open and showing on your taskbar, you'll see that clicking it's taskbar icon just minimises and clicking the icon again restores it).

    Your second question was regarding the .txt file you can output from Duplicate Finder.
    That file is just for your reference, it can help you look at each set of duplicates and decide which you want to keep.
    It can be handy if there are a lot of duplicates - but see below if you have a lot of duplicates found.

    You cannot 'Import' such a .txt file back into Duplicate Finder, it's designed like that for a very good reason.
    There is no way that CCleaner can know if that txt file is still valid, since you made the txt file you may have deleted some duplicates or made some more.
    For that reason you have to do a new scan for duplicates each time you use Duplicate Finder.

    Quote

    There's an awful lot of stuff there that really needs to be removed

    That statement concerns me a bit, I suspect that "awful lot of stuff" may be system file duplicates that need to be there; removing them could cause your computer to stop working properly.

    Please read this:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    There are a few things to be aware of when using Duplicate Finder:
    • It's main use is to find duplicates of your own files, photos, documents, music, etc. that you may have saved or copied to more than one place.
    • You should leave the system files alone, always set duplicate finder to ignore them. (unless you have a specific problem with some system files).
    • Many system files need duplicates in different places, and if you delete those duplicates some things may/will stop working properly.
    • Even with your own files remember that 'photo 01' in one folder may not be the same as 'photo 01' in a different folder - so it's usually best to untick 'name' and search on file size/contents rather than name.
    • Only delete something if you are certain that you don't need/want it.
    • If you don't know exactly what any duplicate file found is then it's best to leave it alone.
    You can output a list of what has been found to a textfile if you want to check them out further before deciding if you want to delete them.
     You cannot import that textfile back into duplicate finder, things may have changed since you made that textfile so a new scan is needed each time you use duplicate finder.
    Once you have decided which, if any, files to delete then you can use the tickboxes to delete one (or more) of the duplicates.
    When using the tickboxes then you have to select them one by one, there is no 'Delete All' button - that would be just too dangerous and you could very easily delete (hundreds of) things that you want or need.
    There is more information on using Duplicate Finder here:
    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/204950144-How-do-I-use-CCleaner-for-Windows-Duplicate-File-Finder-#duplicate-finder-only-searches-for-files-via-the-categories-you-select--0-2
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Personally when using the Duplicate Finder I usually use these settings:
    This is set to search my C: drive for my 'true' duplicates, not just files that happen to have the same name.
    In fact files with the same name will not be found unless their contents are identical.
    It's set to ignore the System files - as well as ignoring empty, hidden, or write protected files.

    Note in particular those "Ignore's" - those are as important if not more important than the "Match by's".

  4. @Briano

    This thread is from 2009 -  so not relevant to Windows 10, and obviously CCleaner has also changed a lot in the past 13 years.

    If you are having an issue then please start a new thread, describing what is happening (or not happeneing when it should) for you.

  5. Thanks for reporting this.

    I have managed to repeat the problem, but only the once.

    I rolled back Irfanview a version and then opened CCleaner and ran Health Check to test it.
    It found the updated Irfanview version and showed "1 apps to update".
    I clicked 'Security' and it did still give me the tickbox option not to update, which I unticked.
    However, going back to the Overview 'Security' was still showing "1 apps to update" despite the tickbox being unticked.
    Back into 'Security' - no updates were showing.
    Back to Overview and 'Security' was still showing "1 apps to update".
    Clicking 'Make it Better' did update Irfanview to the latest version.

    So on that occasion unticking the box obviously hadn't worked correctly.
    It seems to have done only half of the job it should have, what most would consider the unimportant half.

    Could I ask/ check if that is also what you saw?
    It's not quite what you describe in your post, but I may just have gone into more detail.

    Next:
    I then rolled back the Irfanview version again, opened CCleaner, and ran Health Check again, again I unticked the checkbox for the update.
    This time when I went back to Overview it had correctly been removed from 'Security' which was showing "0 apps to update".
    Clicking 'Make it Better' did NOT update Irfanview to the latest version.

    Every time that I have tried since Health Check is behaving as it should and not updating if the app has been unticked.

    So it looks like an intermittent, or even one-off, bug in v6.07. (Bugs like that can be a PITA to track down).

    I've reported it to the staff to be investigated and fixed.

    PS. There are another couple of ways that you can prevent the automatic software updating in Health Check Pro.

    1. Go offline before running Health Check. If it's offline then it can't check for or fetch any software updates.
    2. Always use Custom Clean not Health Check.
  6. To expand a bit on what Nergal said:

    Quite a few apps, and Windows itself, use those Edge and IE temporary areas as a convenient location for their temporary files.
    Why make a new storage area for temporary files when those are already there as standard?
    (In fact Edge still stores some of it's temporary files in IE's temporary storage areas).

    So even if you never use those browsers other things will be filling those areas with temporary files.

    I wrote because I was surprised to see a reputable site like Ccleaner hacked in a way that was so visually convincing, and that managed to slide in under my anti-virus programme (Bitdefender).

    Without knowing exactly what you saw its difficult to say.

    But the Google Store does have a habit of putting unrelated advertising on pages.
    Sometimes, especially on a phone, those adds can look like they are part of the page, when of course they are just advertising that Google has put there.
    The wording of the ads is also often devised to tempt/trick you into thinking that you must click them.
    If you visit the page again Google will probably put a different ad there.

    So yes, if anyone else had put it there then you would say that the page had been hacked.
    But it's Google's Store, and so it's their own dodgy advertising and not a hack.
    Many people dislike Google for their use of such dodgy advertising and other such behaviour.

    Of course Bitdefender, or any other AV, will not react to it because it is official Google advertising.
    If you do click it your AV won't react to the download because it's coming from the Google Store so seen as approved.
    A good browser adblocker has a better chance of blocking the ad so you don't see it in the first place, but only if you are looking at the Store in a browser and not if you are using the Google Store app on an Android device.

  8. Odd,

    Possibly something went awry in the update/install?

    I'd just do an over the top reinstall.
    Download the Slim installer from the Builds page and double-click it to reinstall CCleaner.
    https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
    Don't uninstall the old one first and the new install will pick up your licence and settings.

    PS. Have you been using a registry cleaner other than the one in CCleaner itself?
    That might have removed the registry entry that tells CCleaner to display the PO icon.

  9. When you purchased on 31/12/2021 was that at a special offer price?
    (And the renewal is at the full price - with a lesser discount?).

    I believe that message is a standard renewal offer for existing customers rather that one of the special offers.
    (You'll probably get another couple as it gets nearer the expiry date).

    As you still have 74 days on the licence then I'd suggest that you wait and see if there is another 'New Year' special offer this year.

    There are various special offers throughout the year, some have different discounts, some are country/region specific.
    You have to keep your eyes open, and maybe keep visiting the purchase webpage when you are getting close to your expiry date, to see what price is being offered.

    TIP- If you purchase a new licence at at an offer price then use the same email address that you used for your existing licence.
    That way if there are less than 90 days left on your existing licence then your existing licence will be automatically 'merged' to the new one and the day remaining on the existing licence added to it. (It takes up to a day for that automatic merge to happen).
    If you can't/don't use the same email address (or if there are more than 90 days on your existing licence) then you can email support@ccleaner.com and ask them for a manual 'Licence Merge' of the old and new licences.

  10. Where did you get that email address from?

    The correct email address for support is: support@CCleaner.com

    Emailing your query to that will get an automated acknowledgement then a contact by an email from a support agent.

    Alternatively you can also raise a support ticket using the form on this page: https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=86507
    (Set the 'Product' field to 'CCleaner for Android').

    I'm not sure exactly what is going on here, but I suspect that the photos may still be there and it's a listing/pointer to them that has been cleared.

    Even if they have somehow been deleted from the phone then they may still be recoverable, especially if you have sync and/or backup enabled.
    See these for more info about recovering photos deleted from Android, and backup/sync:
    https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid
    https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

  11. Yes that's expected behaviour.

    Creating a wildcard entry in the 'Cookies to keep' list will remove any entries that match that wildcard from the 'Cookies on Computer' list to show that they won't get cleared.

    Perhaps 'Cookies on computer' would be better named 'Cookies to clear'.
    (Personally there's a few things I would have worded differently, but that's up to the developers. They do sometimes change wording when we suggest it).

  12. It's not a good idea to put your registered name and licence key on display where anyone could see, and steal, it.
    I have removed them.

    See 'CCleaner is registered, but you can't see the Manage Subscription button' on this page:

    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020674812-How-do-I-manage-my-CCleaner-subscription-#ccleaner-is-registered-but-you-can-t-see-the-manage-subscription-button--0-5

    It does seem odd though that your screenshot shows that Auto Extension is enabled but there is no 'Manage Subscription' button showing?
    (It should be above the note about billing).

    You can use the 'Contact Us' button on that linked page to raise a ticket with support, they should be able to sort things out for you.

    Or, if you prefer, you can send them an email to support@ccleaner.com

    If sending an email it's best to use the same email that you used when purchasing CCleaner, or at least tell them what that email was.

  13. If it is in the 'Cookies to keep' list  then Custom Clean will leave them alone.
    Smart Cleaning uses the Custom Clean rules so will also leave them alone.

    To be more specific to your question they would not be included in the Analyze so wouldn't be cleared that way either.

    The same goes for your wildcard example, all cookies that match the wildcard syntax will be ignored and Custom Clean will leave them alone.

    However; running Health Check will still clear them (apart from the ones that are there by default). Health Check always uses it's own rules regardless of your Custom Clean settings.
    (Sometimes that can be handy for a one-off clearing of the cookies that you normally keep).

    Of course if you have your browser set to clear cookies on exiting/closing then it will still do that.
    CCleaner can't change what you have told your browser(s) settings to do.

  14. I assume that you mean VLC Media Player.

    It's always best to check an applications website for the latest version, if you 'check for updates' in the application itself they will often say you are up to date even when there is a newer version available.

    There is a new version of VLC released, 3.0.18 Vetenari: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.18.html
    CCleaner has been offering it for about a week. (It was actualy offically available from VLC for a couple of days before VLC put it up on their website - if you knew where to check).
    However if you 'check for updates' in VLC itself it may still tell you that you are up to date with v 3.0.17. (Mine did that).
    That's simply because such updates are 'metered out' to different users at different times to avoid overloading the update servers.
    VLC will get round to offering it to you soon.

    You can wait for it to be offered in your VLC, or if you want it now you can update it yourself, or let CCleaner update it for you.

    From the websites of your other two apps:
    The latest Calibre is v6.9, released on 25 November: https://calibre-ebook.com/whats-new
    The Latest  PeaZip is v8.9.0 released 9 October: https://peazip.github.io/peazip-64bit.html

    I note that PeaZip does seem to get an update every 2 months so it's about due for one now, CCleaner may have picked up a new PeaZip release before it has been put up on their website.

    If you already do have those versions and CCleaner is offering you something else then please let us know just what CCleaner is offering you.
    A screenshot of the Software Updater would be clearest.

    118GB

    Just trolling through using WinDirStat for potential bloat.

    Fair enough, I understand looking for bloat to remove.

    If you really want to clear that 'installer' folder then you could make that folder an 'Include' in CCleaner Custom Clean, that way Custom Clean would clear it when run.

    Doing that does mean that the files will no longer be cached, so will need to be reinstalled if anything wants to use them in future.
    It's also possible that some programme is using one or more of them regularly and will stop working properly if it's removed - that's why we recommend leaving them alone. You won't realy know unless you delete them and something stops working.
    (PS. I don't even have that "C:\Windows\Installer" folder on this laptop).

    While 118GB is sufficient, if that's for the OS and you store files on another drive, you might want to look at getting a larger capacity drive for your OS drive.
    Particularly if the 118GB is a HDD, I'd clone it to a 250GB or 500GB SSD and swap it out.

    I recently swapped out the old 75GB HDD spinning disc in an old laptop for a new 250GB SSD, vastly improved performance and it flies along now running Win 10 22H2.
    (Cost me under £25 GBP, $30 US, and took me about an hour to do).

  16. That linked article is from 2009 - so it's 13 years old.
    Windows has changed a lot in those 13 years.

    You've asked this question before back in 2019 and were advised to leave the Windows install files alone:
    https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/54551-massive-win10-cwindowsinstaller-leavings-old-patchcleaner-no-longer-available/#comment-308771

    What is the capacity of your OS drive?

    If you are running short of the disc space needed for Windows 10 (It needs at  least 32 Gb these days) then it's time to swap it out for a larger capacity drive.

  17. Settings options not being available like that sounds like a system file may have become corrupted, it happens (often following a Windows Update).

    The first, simplest, thing to try is a Restart of your laptop, that's a "Restart" and not a Shutdown/Boot.
    Then try to access the sign-in settings options again.

    If it's still not working then there are a couple of commands that can check and restore the system image.

    Firstly it's usually a good idea to make sure that the stored system image is 'healthy'.
    (Some people skip this because it takes extra time, but if a job's worth doing ....)

    1. Open the Start menu and begin typing the word command
    2. In the window that opens select 'Command Prompt', and select the 'Run as administrator' option.
      An 'elevated' (administrator) command window will open.
    3. Type, or copy/paste, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.

    That will check the stored system image and repair any errors that are found in it.
    Note that it may appear to be stuck after writing a couple of lines, this is normal behavior. After a minute you should see some stars and a percentage counter as the process continues, it will say when it has completed sucessfully.

    Next run the System File Checker:
    (This can be run without doing the DISM first).

    1. If you don't already have an elevated command window open after doing a DISM then follow steps 1 & 2 above.
    2. Type, or copy/paste, SFC /scannow

    That checks your system files against the stored image, and repairs them if necessary.
    If errors are found and fixed then run the same SFC /scannow command again, when there are errors it can sometimes take 3 or 4 runs to fix them all.

    Restart your computer and check if the sign-in settings problem has now been fixed.

    Here's a screenshot of the DISM and SFC process that I just ran on this laptop.
    You can see that SFC found and repaired errors, so I ran the "SFC /scannow" command a second time which then reported OK.
    (TBH I haven't been noticing any problems with this laptop so I'm glad I checked - some people do a check once a week or once a month).

    image.png

  18. That sounds like you have fallen for some kind of scam with the gaming video offer. CCleaner does not do anything like that.

    Hopefully you did not give them any bank account or payment card details. If you did then you should be changing those details ASAP.

    To get back to the official CCleaner:

    Whether your CCleaner licence will work with Android as well as Windows depends on what kind of licence you have, and how many devices it is valid for:

    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045615611-How-do-I-use-a-CCleaner-for-Android-activation-code-

    I suspect that your comnents about trackers are a common misunderstanding that we see often, have a read of this:
