  1. I recommend that you simply download and use Recuva Free version.

It has exactly the same recovery functionality as the paid for version, there is no difference whatsoever.

If you buy Recuva then currently you would be paying the extra just for automatic updating (There haven't been any updates to Recuva for a number of years now) and priority support (You can get support here on the forum, or non-priority support by email).

Of course if you still want to pay for Recuva, for no particular reason, then Piriform will be quite happy to take your money

  2. There is a system in place to periodically update outdated/obsolete versions of CCleaner.

CCleaner versions 5.## have reached End-of-Life and so are currently being updated to the latest version, v6.11.
    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/13760826790669-End-of-Life-of-CCleaner-for-Windows-v5

In particular you should note that CCleaner versions below v5.92 no longer clear cookies effectively, because the major browsers have changed how they handle and store cookies.

You need to keep your CCleaner up to date for it to be effective. Browsers, apps, and Windows change all the time so the cleaning has to change to keep up.

As you were using a very old version of CCleaner you should have been getting notifications that this update would happen soon.
(I have not seen the notifications myself but believe that they would have also told you how to prevent the automatic update if you really wanted to).

This week versions 5.36 to 5.73 that are still in use will be automatically updated to v6.11.
Next week it is intended that versions 5.74 to 6.0 will also be automatically updated to v6.11

As noted - These automatic updates of outdated versions can be prevented by more advanced users, who realise that by doing so their old CCleaner version is unsupported and will not be cleaning things properly.

PS. As moderators we were last week given a 'heads up' that these updates would be happening this week and next.

    Quote

After several months of alerts to impacted users, next week this target range will be extended to CCleaner 5.36-5.73 and then up to CCleaner 6.00 the week afterwards to help out those who remain stuck on outdated versions and have not been able to update themselves.

  3. We have seen this before. (and can replicate it).
It's a permissions thing and  happens/can happen if you untick 'Run CCleaner' at the end of the install.

    There's an easy fix -

Reinstall CCleaner but this time leave 'Run CCleaner' ticked in the installer and let CCleaner open from the installer.

That's it - You can close CCleaner and it will now open/run as normal for a non-admin user.

If you need the latest installer then you can download it here: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

Don't uninstall your current CCleaner Pro. Once downloaded just double click on the 'CCsetup611.exe' and it will pick up your licence key from the current install.
(If you have uninstalled your current one then you'll have to enter your key into the new install to re-register it).

  4. I think you have a missundestanding about the 2 types of computer 'Memory'

What is cleared from 'memory' (Random Access Memory) is not your real issue here.

Your issue is what can be cleared from 'storage' (Storage Memory).

Although both are commonly referred to as just 'memory' they are different things.

A restart will clear your RAM but will not clear what is stored on the drive. (There is a bit of overlap there though with the pagefile which is temporary RAM put on the drive for a while to free up actual RAM).

CCleaner clears temporary and junk files from Storage Memory (the drive) but not from RAM.

However you have that much other stuff stored on the drive and so what can be cleared from storage by CCleaner can only be a temporary help - As we have being trying to say will you have to move or delete a lot of that 'other stuff'. Lmacri was trying to help you find just what that 'other stuff' on your drive might be.

You say that you want to learn so please calm down and look at what is being explained, that is the way to learn.

  5. Frankly that C: Drive does not have enough freespace available, and it will give issues until you do something about that.

On a HDD it is recommended to have around 15-520% freespace so that Windows itself can work properly.
Windows needs that freespace to Optimise the drive, needs space for the Pagefile, for Windows Updates, and so on.

38.48 GB is only 8% of your drive free, which is why Windows complains (and turns your bar red).
Even the 52.1 GB is only 11%  free, and that's not enough because that freespace will quickly get used again.

Without enough freespace on the disc then as you have found Windows will need frequent reboots/restarts to operate as it should.

You need to remove some applications or data from the drive onto another drive, or to get a biger drive to use for the C: drive.

Your screenshots indicate that you have around 400GB used for applications and data other than Windows itself.
Do you have a lot of video, images, or games on your C; drive?
(If/when gaming are you 'saving game' to the C: drive?)

What is taking up the disc space may not be at first visible to you, so lmacri was simply trying to help you with working out what is taking all that space up.

BUT - Just using CCleaner to remove temporary/junk files is not enough in your situation, because as soon as you start using the computer again the temporary files will build up again, and you'll quickly run out of diskspace again.

  6. I see that you asked a similar question before, sorry no-one replied back then.

That will probably be because you have dual channel memory capability, so Speccy is reporting the number of channels available/used (8 in total) rather than just the physical slots (4).

If it just reported the physical slots then that would be less RAM channels than you actually have available.

Why the first line says only one slot total is probably just due to the way the multi-channel RAM controller is configured by HP.
(It really is time that Speccy had an update to recognise newer technologies).

  7. I don't believe that particular warning box has a setting you can specify in the ini. (Some other warning messages do).

Which is why the only way I know of to restore it again after you have ticked the 'Do not show...' is by resetting to defaults.

TBH most users want it always on or always off.
Mine is always off because I'll often do a clean with a browser deliberately open so just let CCleaner skip the browser without asking.

just trying to help clarify the situation for Jack, just my thoughts. Hope that helps.

And thanks for spending time to do that . - That is what we are all about here, trying to work out what any issue is and how to resolve them.

It's great that as users we can help each other, and that the company staff will also get involved on the forum when deeper help or insight on cnmpany policy is needed.

  9. That is usually because CCleaner sees there is an update but the server hosting that update is unreachable for some reason.
It's a software company server, not Piriform or Avast.

Can you say which software it is trying to update. There is a known problem with Teamworks in CCleaner 6.11 at the moment.

PS. Playing with the Hosts file can make such issues worse. (You are experienced enough to know that though).

  10. Not at all,

as the latest screenshot from @Jack53 shows he is in fact logged out of his google account - look at the blue button top right, it is asking him to sign in to Google again.

The only reason I can think of where that wouldn't happen (assuming that you ran Custom Clean with Session ticked fro that browser) is if you ran CCleaner while the browser was still open - maybe open as a background process so not on screen.

The fact that Google search is showing as the homepage is a browser setting, change the homepage in the browser,  or change the search engine in the browser.

  11. Where does it create that empty folder and sub-folders?
ie. what is the full pathname for them?

Are you sure that it is that app that is creating them?
Microsofts own OneDrive does a similar thing for each user of a computer.

Be very very careful if you try to add those folders for cleaning, you don't want to be clearing your standard folders with those names.

  12. Are you sure that it was CCleaner and not Windows Storage Sense? (Or something else you may have installed).

A few questions to see if we can work out what may have happened:

    CCleaner Pro or Free?

Did you open and run CCleaner after you got the prompt? If so did you run Health Check or Custom Clean?

What are you Smart Cleaning 'Junk' settings?
