  1. Well, usually it's pretty obvious if a file on a P2P network is a phony. Obviously, if you find Adobe Photoshop CS2, and it's only 61k, it most likely is not Adobe Photoshop. Common sense.
  2. I don't think you did say Home. But the two retail versions of Windows are Home and Professional, Home being the cheaper and less feature-full version of the two. I just assumed it was Home, because that would be the only one which is close in price to what you wrote. In my previous post, I included a link to the site with the listed prices, including the one I saw for WinXP Home. But you are right, there is a lot of discounted software on that site. I usually stick with freeware and open source, but to each their pwn.
  3. So basically, competition ceases to exist. Without competition, products will cease to get better or cheaper. In fact, the prices may rise, while the product loses abilities or features! And anyone who manages to hack the system and make a similar product for free is likely to be sued. This is definitely frightening stuff. What if DRM does enter into other domains, such as automobiles or appliances? When everything becomes proprietary, what happens to freedom of choice? When the only app that opens a .doc is MS Office, how will people on a budget be able to type and read these files? When the only way I can edit a certain image format is with Adobe Photoshop, how will I be able to share my pictures with my friends who can't shell out $600 for a stupid app?! DRM is unlogical, unreasonable, unfair, and dare I say, unconstitutional. Frankly, with DRM in effect, I feel like my rights are being crapped on. This sucks.
  4. Ok, I just checked the User Assist History box to see if I would run into the same problem, and I did! After running it, none of the apps that I used would pin themselves to the Start menu. So I tried restarting my computer, and what do you know, problem solved. I'm not sure if this is a CCleaner problem or a Windows problem. Maybe MrG should look into this. I'm using WinXP Pro with SP2 and all current updates (as of Jan. 12, 2005), and I'm using CCleaner 1.26.218.
  5. Yeah, I bet the guys are all over her. I mean, take kobrakommander56, for example...
  6. How very true. I converted over 9 GB of wma's at 128k to MP3 at the same bit rate, and they sound like crap. I know, very stupid. I did it over a year ago, before I knew about all the formats and their capabilities. Now the entire collection is basically worthless! One of these days, I'll have to remake it...
  7. I thought you said Windows XP Home was only $100. I just went on your website, and they have it listed for $209.95. That's more than I paid! However, they do have the WinXP Pro Upgrade for $99.95, which is pretty good. That is about what you'd pay for the WinXP Home Upgrade in my hood. Another good buy I saw was Photoshop CS2 for $299; it's closer to $600 here.
  8. Mike Rochip's sister, lol. Shhhh! If he sees this, he'll have a fit! He gets real defensive of her.
  9. Let's hope it doesn't transition into anything more than that... Most likely wishful thinking.
  10. $100 for the full version? That's a good deal. How much for XP Pro? Here in Illinois, it's close to $300! That's why I stuck with Home for my friend's computer. She wouldn't use Pro to its potential anyway.
  11. Don't sweat it! I've posted suggestions and later on seen that they were already there. It's good when other people ask for the same feature, because then it has more chance of actually being implemented.
  12. Both of these have been requested multiple times, and both are excellent features. Good suggestions, lets hope they make it into one of the new versions!
  13. I'm not sure I agree with you. You said that drives are a lot faster than they used to be, so it seems like you're saying that in the past it was faster to have Windows and the pagefile on separate disks. Whether or not that was what you were implying, it is true; if I took two old HDs and split up my OS and pagefile between them, it would be faster than having both on one old HD. If disks have gotten faster, than sure a pagefile and OS on a single new HD would be faster than the pagefile and OS split up on two old disks. Disk speeds and caches have more than doubled and octupled, respectively, so there would be no contest, even though having both on the same drive is a less logical setup. But, what if you had the pagefile and OS on two separate new HDs? Obviouly, it would be faster than having both on one new HD, because the OS drive could totally dedicate its rotations and cache to the OS, while the pagefile HD could totally dedicate its rotations and cache to the pagefile. Even if you had both the pagefile and OS on an HD with NCQ (native command queueing), it would still be a slower setup than having two new non-NCQ HDs dedicated solely to either the OS or pagefile.
  14. If you upgrade from ME to XP, aren't you stuck with the FAT32 file system? Or is the option to upgrade to NTFS given? I never use the upgrade option; I like to do a clean install. But you can save alot of money that way.
  15. Assuming that you're using WinXP, go under Cleaner > Windows > Adavanced and try unchecking User Assist History. Next time you use an app, Windows should put it in the most used program list.

Ah, a fellow adult n00b. I'm 18 as well. Out of curiousity, what is your native tongue? I promise I won't tell Microsoft!
  17. RAM? You'd almost think that would improve your "memory".
  18. Darn! That would've been an easy fix; just unplug. So, have you tried out other high-power appliances in the surge protector yet? And if so, what was the outcome?
  19. I think he just needs to quit kicking his system! And I just built a new system with 2 GB of Corsair RAM (dual channel). Speedy little booger! You can never have too much memory.
  20. Awesome! Glad to hear it; although I'm sorry you're stuck with WinME. Try not to faint when you have to pay for WinXP; I just built a new PC for a friend, and when I got WinXP Home for her at Staples, it cost $200! Ouch. But it sure beats ME!
  21. I think you guys misread both of my posts. In the first post, I addressed Andavari's concern, because you could organize your apps in more than one way (such as name, group, date, etc.). So yes, Andavari, you can still arrange them by name. And in the second post, I addressed Eldmannen's concern, because any programs not listed in CCleaner's database could be filed under Other or Miscellaneous. So yes, Eldmannen, all apps can still be listed and organized accordingly. So ultimately, by letting you organize your Uninstall list, you get more ease and functionality, not less.
  22. You do realize that CCleaner already does this with the apps listed under Cleaner > Applications and Cleaner > Windows, don't you? It has categories such as Internet, Multimedia, Utilites, etc. So why would it be so much harder to do the same thing with items under Uninstall? You could use the same or similar categories as those listed in the apps and Windows lists, and any programs that CCleaner doesn't know about could just be categorized under Other, or Miscellaneous. Doesn't seem so difficult to me.
  23. Are you talking about Zone Alarm? It's a firewall, so it should have fairly extensive control over the your network; otherwise, how much good could it do? Don't you have a firewall? Or do you use a hardware firewall?
  24. Oooo... this could be bad. I happen to love Google; I use their search engine, their email, their instant messenger... the list goes on. I may have to start searching elsewhere soon. Let's just hope they don't turn into another Microsoft!
  25. Yeah, I did some hardware cleanup a little while back; I found an 3.5" hard drive with only 125 MB total! A plain old CD can hold nearly 6 times that! Crazy how things have advanced...
