Yeah, I've run into that problem before, along with many other members. I had Paint.NET do that to me; I removed it and it still showed up. I think it may be because of Window's method of uninstallation, which doesn't always remove all of an app's components. But if CCleaner could look for partially removed apps and finish the job, or prevent apps from showing up that have never been installed, that would be great. Maybe this is already being worked on? I know that an awful lot of people have suggested it.

It certainly is, but you will also have to change your motherboard, so it won't be very cheap. If I was you, for now I would stick with just WinXP Pro. But, back to the proc and mobo, you need a mobo that supports 64 bit processors. I would suggest getting a board that supports AMD processors, since you can't put an Intel processor in an AMD motherboard, and visa versa; the motherboard you get determines the processor you get. The reason I like AMDs is because they run cooler than Intels and get more accomplished per cycle (Hertz). Not to mention they are usually cheaper to buy, although that is by no means the main reason I like them. If you know any hardware gurus at your college, you may want to tell them your dilemma and see if they can find you a reasonably priced mobo and proc and install it for you. Expect to spend around $250-300. I know, not what you wanted to hear!

Do you have a computer with a 64 bit processor, such as an AMD Athlon 64? The x64 is in reference to 64 bits, and any computer with a 32 proc will not run the 64 bit version of Windows. Also, beware that if you do end up using XP Pro 64 Bit Edition, your drivers and 64 bit app choices are fairly limited right now. More 64 bit software and drivers come out every day, but compatibility is still no where near what it is for someone using a 32 bit OS. I should note, however, that most of your old 32 bit apps should work on WinXP 64. Some might not, but the compatibility with old apps is supposed to be fairly decent, so I wouldn't worry about that anyway.

Have you tried uninstalling CCleaner, and then installing and running it in Safe Mode? That may clear up your problems. Also, bring up the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), click the Processes tab, and make sure that only one instance of ccleaner.exe is running. If for some reason it is running multiple times, that may be giving you troubles.

Yeah, I sure hope that ATI gets back into the game. Supposedly their newest card is supposed to have 48 pixel pipelines, but I very highly doubt that is true. To put it in perspective, Nvidia's 7800 has 20. Another thing that bothers me about ATI is the temperature of their latest GPUs. ATI has always made cooler running cards than Nvidia, but for some reason that is no longer the case. ATI 1800 takes up two slots (one for cooling and one for the board itself), while the Nvidia keeps the cooling and the board in a single slot, without overheating! So, I can't stress it enough: if you're getting a budget card for a good gaming experience, go with ATI. But if you are getting a new card for a fantastic gaming experience, don't think twice about sticking with Nvidia.

What version of Windows do you have? If you don't have WinXP, you might need to download the Visual Basic 6 SP5: Run-time Redistribution Pack. I don't think CCleaner will even install if you don't have this, but I could be wrong. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling CCleaner and reinstalling it in Safe Mode. Then run it and see what happens.

Oh, sorry about that! Didn't see that part. That is odd. My suggestion would be to open up CCleaner and click on Issues, and uncheck "Installer" from the Registry Integrity list. Run the Issues scan again; I should mention before you run the scan to restore the items deleted from the previous scan which goofed up the installer. Then, try installing an app again and see if you run into the same problem. If you do, try unchecking other related issues, such as "Applications" or "Missing Shared DLLs", until you find the culprit. Then you can post which item it was that caused this problem so that MrG knows about it.

Yeah, so far just Uninstall and Startup, but supposedly there will a data wiping feature soon. If km307 wants to be able to disable startup items without deleting them, he should go to Start > msconfig and select the Startup tab. Any box you uncheck will turn off that item, but give you the ability to turn it on again later. I suggested this for CCleaner a while ago; would make a nice addition.

So, this is something that MrG has stated will be available in a future version? Or is it something that one of the members thought would be added? I wasn't sure, which is why I wrote that it might just be a myth.

Oh, well something like that app makes sense. From the screenshots, it looks like it is set up well. I might have to give it a try.

Go to Start > Run... and type in "regedit" (without the quotes). Once Regedit opens up, hit Ctrl+F to bring up the search bar, and enter in Google, or Google Earth, or something along those lines. Find the items in the registry that pertain to Google Earth, and remove them. Just be careful not remove anything that has to do with any of your other Google products, assuming you have any. CCleaner thinks Google Earth is still on your computer because some parts of it were not removed when you uninstalled it.

Did you back up your registry issues before deleting them, like CCleaner prompts you to? If so, simply double-click the backup file and restore the issues that CCleaner removed. If this solves your problem, then CCleaner is to blame. If not, you'll have to look elsewhere for your problem.

Supposedly an eraser, or wiping, feature is being added to CCleaner. But that could just be a myth. Dozens of users (myself included) have suggested a wiping feature, so hopefully the much anticipated new version will include it. MrG said the new version will be available soon! Wetting self with glee.

I suppose showing how much space each of the apps take in the uninstall list could be beneficial, but scanning all of the folders on your computer and displaying how much each one holds would take forever, and the list would be miserable to navigate. There are thousands of folders and tens of thousands of files! The list would be huge, and reading it would be an all-day activity. Wouldn't be much faster than right-clicking each folder, clicking properties, and viewing the size that way. Something like that should probably be its own standalone utility, if that even. I guess I don't totally understand what purpose it would serve.

For the computer I built, I used a Radeon X850 Pro with 256 MB of GDDR3. It's pretty similar to the one JAGO is getting, just a slight improvement. As far as GPU goes (ATI vs. Nvidia), in the past I have always favored ATI. I would have never even considered getting an Nvidia card; it was like the Intel of GPUs. But nowdays, ATI has somewhat lowered their standards and Nvidia has raised the bar, so if I was to buy a brand new, non-budget GPU, it would most definitely be Nvidia, as much as I hate to say that. Nvidia's 7800 absolutely stomped on ATI's scrawny little silicon butt.

I just built a rig pretty similar to yours, with a slightly different video card and a different mobo. The motherboard that I got (ABIT KN8 Ultra Socket 939) cost about $40 more than yours, but it has a few extra features. It has 3 PCI-X x1 slots and 3 PCI slots (as opposed to the Biostar's 1 and 2, respectively), so you can add in more components such as wireless network cards or TV tuners It has 4 SATA ports (as opposed to 2) It has 8 channel integrated audio (instead of 6 channel) It has onboard gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) ethernet (instead of 10/100 Mbps) And what I believe is the most important difference, the ABIT board supports the Athlon 64 FX and Athlon X2, while the Biostar doesn't. Dual core procs like the Athlon X2 will become very popular soon, and offer a huge performance boost for people who multitask. If your board doesn't support multiple cores, your CPU upgrading options will be limited in a couple years (4 core procs are supposed to be on the market by 2007). Anyway, both are very good motherboards, the ABIT is just somewhat more upgradable. Any AMD proc is an improvement over that hiddeous Intel you've been forcing yourself to put up with!

KBT42, have you used any EZ apps at all, or been on their website, or done anything that could possibly add EZ Antivirus to your registry? If I was you, I would go to Start > Run... and enter in regedit. Then hit Ctrl+F and do a search for EZ or EZ Antivirus, or something along those lines, and see if you can locate anything that doesn't belong, and manually remove it. This may fix your problem. I had the same thing happen with Paint.NET, and after deleting a couple of registry keys, it was no longer in the Apps list.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan myself. I've looked for free animated gif builders, and have yet to find a good one. I use Adobe ImageReady to make my animated gifs, but it is a huge pain. You have to make each frame a layer, and then set the timings for the frames, and render it as a gif... it is a huge annoyance. If you only need to make a couple things, you can get some trial software here, but I don't know if it's any good.
