  1. ident, there are a few reasons. First, the delete option in avast! only applies to scan logs and avast! has a lot of other logs besides scan logs. Second, the option in avast! to limit the size of other logs doesn't work; logs keep growing anyway. Third, my question is about how to use Ccleaner, not avast! If anyone has any input on why CCleaner isn't recognizing avast! in Windows XP I could use the help, otherwise I'm done with this.
  2. Did I restart? Yes Is anyone else with XP SP3 experiencing this or is it just me?
  3. Read my post carefully. I said CCleaner DOES clean avast! on my computer with Vista, even with Avast's self-protection on. Why doesn't it on the other computer with the same settings? Avast's self-protection module shouldn't interfere with the harmless deletion of log files anyway. And why doesn't it block deletion if I add the files manually with Include? It seems if it was blocking deletion it would block this as well. EDIT: I just tried the XP machine with Avast's self-protection off and CCleaner still doesn't delete any of the logs.
  4. The latest version of CCleaner doesn't automatically recognize avast! files on my mom's computer with XP Service Pack 3. avast! is in the Utilities list and selected, but when I analyze it doesn't list any avast! files, nor does it delete any if I simply clean without analyzing. There are log files in avast! that could be cleaned but they're not for some reason. If I add one of them to the Include list, then it recognizes it and deletes it. I have the avast! self-protection module enabled on both machines and CCleaner cleans avast! just fine on mine with Vista. Can anyone think of anything that might be causing this? Thanks.

    Backup .REG

It should also be remembered that in Options>Advanced, "Show prompt to backup registry issues" has to be checked or it won't save a backup. If you didn't see a prompt and you can't find the backup, that might be the reason. In Vista, Documents should be on the Start Menu, unless someone removed it. If it's not there, Right-click Start>then select Properties>then Customize. Scroll down the list and see if "Don't display" under Documents is selected.
  6. The main things that will slow you down are a hard drive that's nearly full, too many automatic processes and services running in the background, and not enough (or too slow) RAM. I'd worry about RAM last though. Once you eliminate the unneeded services and processes, you may find you have plenty of RAM. 72 registry issues are nothing.
  7. A session cleaner is a good idea in my opinion, but it should be located in Tools or Options with an option to delete all but the most recent one or individually. The way it is now, what is happening with people losing their sessions was bound to happen. People should read the change log for each new update but the reality is a lot don't. Losing a session isn't as bad as some things but it's still annoying. The way Session is set up now, I think it should be off by default.
  8. If you have any extensions or themes installed, you should probably run FF in safe mode and see if it still does it. Go to Start>Run and type "firefox.exe -safe-mode" without quotes and click OK. When the dialogue opens, click "Continue in safe mode." FF will open in safe mode with all extensions and themes disabled (except the default theme). Open a couple of tabs and then close FF saving the session. Then reopen in safe mode. If it works right, then it's probably one of your extensions conflicting with CC or maybe causing a problem all on its own. In Vista and Windows 7, the Run command may not be on the Start Menu by default. You might have to Right-click Start>Properties>Customize>Scroll down the list to "Run command" and check the box>OK. If all else fails I would try the Tab Mix Plus extension for FF. It has an excellent session manager that you might like even better.
  9. I just tested it on mine with "Session" unchecked and it didn't delete the tabs. I have FF 3.6.9 and CCleaner 2.35.1223. I'm using FF's native session manager. Do you use FF's session manager or one from an extension like Tab Mix Plus? If you're not using Tab Mix Plus you might give it a try. Or if you are using it, disable it and see if that makes a difference. There could be a conflict between it and CCleaner. Make sure both CCleaner and FF are current. Uninstall and reinstall CCleaner if you have to. You could always uninstall and reinstall FF but I'd only do that as a last resort. I totally agree that the Firefox Session option should not be checked by default.
  10. I'd use the Windows uninstaller in Control Panel>Programs & Features before CCleaner for major uninstalls, or as others have mentioned, use a dedicated uninstaller for that specific program. In Vista, and I'm assuming Windows 7, occasionally it won't let you uninstall some things if User Account Control is enabled. You can disable UAC and restart but there's a much easier way. Right-click the Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Then enter "%windir%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.ProgramsAndFeatures" without quotes on the first line and press Enter. Programs and Features will open in an elevated state (as administrator) and you can uninstall to your heart's content.
  11. Was everything okay before you uninstalled those programs? I would also agree not to do a system restore back to before you uninstalled them, things will get very messy. I don't know what kind of computer you have, but a lot of newer ones have a full backup of everything stored on the system. You can restore your computer back to exactly where it was the day you bought it. You might check your documentation and see if yours has this. If nothing else can solve your issues, this might be your best option, especially since you've only had it three weeks.
  12. I've had a couple of problems with cookies. The first was because I didn't have Flash checked. It didn't occur to me that Flash stored cookies too. The other was with Firefox. There were some cookies in the "Cookies to Delete" column that wouldn't go away. I didn't have Firefox checked because I have it set up to handle its own cookies. But finally I checked Cookies under Firefox and that got rid of 'em. They never showed in the Firefox cookie manager so I have no idea what they were. There's one that still shows up in CCleaner on a regular basis but not in Firefox . As long as I keep Firefox checked, CCleaner removes it. Just wanted to share my experience for whatever it's worth, maybe it will help someone.
  13. If System Restore doesn't work, you can restore any registry backups you might have from when you cleaned the registry with CCleaner or something else. Start with the most recent and go back till your startup items are restored. It should work, I've done it to restart processes that I stopped and couldn't get started again.
  14. Another possibility, Registry Booster might have installed itself in your Startup folder. Start>All Programs>Startup. If it's in there you may have to remove it and put it somewhere like Program Files>Registry Booster, then remove it from your Startup list. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't reinstall itself to your Startup folder.
  15. It could be a lot of things. I would run CCleaner then restart. Then run it again and see if any more files are created in the Recycle Bin on startup. If there are none, just keep running CCleaner periodically and see if you notice a pattern. Do they show up in the Recycle Bin all at once or spaced out over 2-3 days. Also, right-click the Recycle Bin icon, select Properties and check "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." It will be interesting to see if they go away when you do that. I would also make sure Windows is set to show hiddden files & folders. Control Panel>Folder Options>View>Show hidden files and folders. If it's malware it might be creating hidden files.
  16. Registry Booster probably created a Service for itself that makes it run Automatically at startup. If that's the case you may end up having to turn it off until you need it then turn it back on. If you set the Service to "Manual," Registry Booster might come on only when you manually start it but I've heard Manual isn't always reliable, you might just have to experiment. There might be an option to hide the Tray icon but if the Service is set to Automatic the core program will still run at startup, you just won't see the icon. As Nergal said, there may be an preference you can set to terminate the program core from running at startup. That, imo, would be the best solution, or uninstall.
  17. CCleaner's a good utility but it's fairly conservative which is one thing I like about it. I use it for routine cleans and don't have to worry about it removing anything it shouldn't. I can't explain your experience with TuneUp. Some cleaners have everything from spyware removal to the kitchen sink. They can seem like a magic bullet until they take out something they shouldn't. If TuneUp is actually messing around with svchost.exe that's something I'd be pretty concerned about. One wrong move and your computer won't work at all. I have Glary Utilities which is good for some things, but when I tried its one-click cleaner it kept removing things I didn't want removed and I couldn't figure out how to make it stop. Bottom line each cleaner works differently and you shouldn't rely on any one for everything.
  18. I think theoretically they should be getting cleared. Check Options>Advanced. See if "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours" is checked. If it's not that then I don't know.
  19. Sorry, but I'm not sure I understand your question. Is the problem that CCleaner no longer deletes as much data from Windows Explorer since you updated Firefox? If so, can you tell which specific items aren't getting deleted? There should be several items under Windows Explorer. If you run Analyze it'll tell you specifically which items will be deleted. Are your Firefox files being deleted normally as before? Do you have the latest version of Firefox, 3.6.8? They released 3.6.7 then just a couple of days later they released 3.6.8. You could always try completely removing CCleaner and doing a fresh install.
  20. Willy2 you fixed it dude! It was a subkey in Startupfolder. It was from some Logitech mouse software I uninstalled awhile back. I really appreciate it!
  21. Thanks a lot Willy2. I found all the enabled items where you said they should be. In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\Startupreg there's only an ab(Default) key with no value set and it won't delete. I guess that could be it but what's really weird is no other Startup tool shows it. I've used WhatInStartup by NirSoft, Glary Utilities, Comodo System Cleaner and the Windows "msconfig" Startup Utility. Only CCleaner shows it. Strange indeed. I have Vista 32 bit for whatever it's worth, I don't know if it matters. Thanks everyone for your ongoing support.
  22. The problem is there's no information about it whatsoever. It says "NO" for Enable and that's it, and I can't get it to enable. If it showed a location I could track it down in the registry. I think it might actually be a glitch somewhere in the registry, maybe a leftover key from when I uninstalled something. CCleaner appears to be picking it up for some reason. I searched through the registry to see if there was anything resembling a Startup list among the various CCleaner entries but couldn't find anything.
  23. I have 14 items in the Windows Startup list, all enabled. And the same 14 are in the CCleaner list plus the rogue one. I tried the NirSoft utility you suggested Nergal and it doesn't show the rogue one, just the 14. I tried removing every trace of CCleaner from my system and reinstalling from scratch but when I reinstalled it was still there. I uninstalled CCleaner with Add/Remove Programs then deleted every file and folder I could find named "CCleaner" or "Piriform." I purged the registry in the same way. So unless there's some CCleaner file with an oddball name that's retaining old data I'm out of ideas. It may be one of those things that'll just have to be lived with.
  24. The item I'm asking about is shown at the top of the list and has gray highlighting. Under "Enabled" it says NO. The rest of the items as you look across the row are blank. Normally there would be info in the other columns under "Key" "Program" and "File" but for this particular entry they're all blank. All the other items in the list have information about the files and are just fine. What I would like to know is why this one has no information and why it can't be deleted. Thanks.
