  1. Hi necrophyte: The following assumes you are certain that a Custom Clean feature is the cause of your errors. I never run Health Check (it is too buggy and can cause unexpected problems), and I only run the registry cleaner if I uninstall a program and need to remove orphaned remnants left behind in the registry because I suspect they are causing a problem. The CCleaner support article Clean the Windows Registry warns that to help reduce harmful potentially results that "It’s always safer to leave an entry than to remove it if you’re not 100% sure" what will happen if you remove them. Note that I have iTunes v12.13.1.3 and MS Office Home and Business 2019 Version 2311 / Build 17029.20108 (which includes Microsoft Excel 2019) installed on my Win 10 laptop, and I don't allow the Custom Clean feature of CCleaner to clean any applications I use except my Microsoft Edge browser. I don't want CCleaner to clean my default Firefox browser because of problems this has caused in the past (see my 03-Aug-2020 post <here>) and find it is safer to use my Firefox settings to delete my browsing history on exit . I only enabled Applications tab | Applications | Office 16 and Applications tab | iTunes | Cache Files for demonstration purposes only while I captured the images below. Further to Andavari's suggestion, if you click the Analyze button (but don't click the Run CCleaner button) and double-click on any individual category like "iTunes - Cache Files" you will see details of the individual files that are going to be cleaned. Look for key words like "nvidia", "itunes", "office" and "excel" to see if you can narrow down which category you've selected for cleaning that might be causing your problem. After clicking the Analyze button you can also right-click in the white space below the summary, choose Save to text file .. from the pop-up context menu, and save the log.txt to your desktop or any other location. This log file will contain a detailed list of every individual file that is going to be cleaned and you can search that file (Edit | Find) for key words like "nvidia", etc. Just FYI, I see the following warning if I select Applications tab | iTunes | Log Files in Custom Clean. --------------- Dell Inspiron 15 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3803 * Firefox v121.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23110.3-1.1.23110.2 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2201 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7783 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.19.10858
  2. Hi nukecad: That's not strictly true. On my Win 10 machine, CCleaner will close my MS Edge v119 browser for me if it's left open before I run a Custom Clean. For example, if I launch MS Edge first and then start a Custom Clean in CCleaner I will be asked if I want to close MS Edge (Yes) or skip the cleaning of my internet cache (No) after I click Analyze ... ... and if I choose "Yes" then CCleaner closes MS Edge for me and the analysis proceeds as expected. What has changed recently for Windows 11 users is that simply closing the MS Edge interface isn't going to to be enough to stop all the "extra" MS Edge processes that now run in the background when MS Edge is closed. In theory it might be possible for Piriform / Avast to kill these "extra" MS Edge background processes when a user answers "Yes" to confirm they want to close / stop MS Edge, but this might have unintended consequences (e.g., this could break the Copilot AI that is starting to roll out to Windows 11, and coming soon to Windows 10). We need to hear directly from Piriform / Avast about how they plan to deal with these "extra" MS Edge processes that run in the background when MS Edge is closed on a Windows 11 machine, because they might consider this to be a Windows 11 bug that Microsoft needs to fix on their end. That's why I suggested that dbaker1 start a support ticket and contact them directly. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Edge v119.0.2151.93
  3. Hi dbaker1: You might also want to monitor Panlo's 30-Sep-2023 Why is Edge Running in the Background After Copilot Installation? in the MS Answers forum where over 50 users have reported the same problem. Unfortunately, I don't see a single workaround suggested in that thread that works for every Windows 11 user - at least as of today. Sorry, I still don't understand what you mean by this. Do you mean you changed your default Edge browser settings, and if so exactly what settings did you turn off? For example, do you mean you turned off all four settings at Settings | System and Performance | System? ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Edge v119.0.2151.93
  4. Hi dbaker1: I was just pointing out that I don't see this problem on my Win 10 v22H2 OS with the Portable edition of CCleaner v6.18, which might indicate that your bug is unique to Windows 11 and/or or that the bug does not occur in Portable builds of CCleaner. I found several recent threads in the ElevenForum Browsers and Mail board about problems with MS Edge continuing to run in the background, including Megahertz's 22-Nov-2023 topic Edge Remans Running. There is some speculation in post # 9 of that thread that this is a consequence of the Nov 2023 Patch Tuesday KB5032190 monthly Quality Update (OS build 22621.2715 for Win 11 v22H2, OS build 22631.2715 for Win 11 v23H2) released on 14-Nov-2023 that added a preview of the centralized AI assistant called Copilot. Megahertz's post # 25 in that thread includes the contents of a batch file they run when they want to kill the background msedge.exe process, but I don't have a Win 11 OS so I can't tell you if that batch file will safely kill any msedge.exe process running in the background after MS Edge is closed. I have no idea if Copilot is actually responsible for keeping MS Edge running in the background on your Win 11 machine but see the Highlights section of the release notes <here> for KB5032190 for information more information about this AI assistant. If you have Win 11 Professional OS then Susan Bradley posted instructions in today's AskWoody Alert MS-DEFCON 3: A Slightly Bumpy November (Issue 20.48.1 • 2023-11-28) on how to use the Local Group Policy Editor to disable Copilot if it has been rolled out to your system. If you can't find a workaround in the ElevnForums for stopping your background msedge.exe process and nothing anyone suggests in this forum thread solves your problem then you should submit a CCleaenr support ticket at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general. Be sure to include details that you neglected to provide in this thread, including your computer make and model, antivirus, details about your Win 11 v23H2 OS [including the edition (Home, Professional, etc.) and build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications], your current MS Edge version number, your edition and current version of CCleaner, and exactly what you meant in your original post <here> when you said that "I have turned off everything". The more information you can provide the easier it will be for customer support to provide assistance. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Edge v119.0.2151.93
  5. Hi Nergal: What Windows OS are you using? Is it Win 11 v23H2 like the OP dbaker1? I have no problem cleaning MS Edge v119 using CCleaner Free Portable v6.18 on my Win 10 laptop using the Custom Clean feature as long as those MS Edge settings are disabled and File Explorer and my MS Edge browser are closed. All I see is the usual warning that my files will be permanently deleted, which is what I used to see with CCleaner Free Portable v6.17. What I see after I click Analyze and Run Cleaner .. ... and the final "Cleaning Complete" message I see a few seconds later after I click Continue and disk clean is finished. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Edge v119.0.2151.72
  6. Hi dbaker1: Open your MS Edge settings at Settings | System and Performance | System (or enter edge://settings/system in the address bar) and make sure that Startup Boost and running of background extensions and apps are toggled OFF. 7. Hi Wisewiz: Moderator nukecad speculated in TheOwner's 23-Nov-2023 topic What is wa_3rd_party_host_64.exe in CCleaner Folder? that these OESIS V4 SDK files might be needed for the "new and improved" Software Updater that is starting to roll out to a small number of users for testing (see the release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history) but no one is sure what their purpose is yet. I have a 64-bit OS and after downloading the "official" ccsetup618.zip from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and unzipping I did the usual cleanup I mentioned in my 10-Oct-2023 post <above>. I deleted everything but CCleaner64.exe, portable.dat and License.txt and copied over my ccleaner.ini file containing the configuration settings from my previous CCleaner Portable version before launching CCleaner64.exe ***. My CCleaner Free Portable v6.18 still runs correctly after the \x86 and \x64 subfolders are deleted (which include files like CCleanerBugReport.exe, wa_3rd_party_host_64, CCleanerDU.dll, etc.) but I should add that I don't use Health Check, Software Updater or Driver Updater. The only features I need are Custom Clean and the registry cleaner (which I rarely use) and they still work correctly. *** The first time you launch CCleaner64.exe this creates the \DATA and \LOG subfolders, but I no longer see the \Setup subfolder that was created with previous versions of CCleaner Free Portable v6.x. If you use a non-English version of CCleaner Portable do not delete the \Lang folder. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838
  8. Just an FYI that APMichael reported that CCleaner Portable v6.18 will crash if the registry entries at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner are deleted before ccsetup618.zip is downloaded from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and unzipped. See their 24-Nov-2023 topic at CCleaner v6.18 Portable Crashes Immediately. I don't know if this has anything to do with the two new executables named wa_3rd_party_host_32.exe and wa_3rd_party_host_64.exe (components of the OESIS V4 SDK developed by OPSWAT, Inc. - see TheOwner's 23-Nov-2023 topic What is wa_3rd_party_host_64.exe in CCleaner Folder?) that have been added to ccsetup618.zip but it's another example of an unexpected problem that can occur when data for a portable app is stored in the registry. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838
  9. Hi APMichael: Do you know if this problem occurred with the current v6.18.10838 (rel. 23-Nov-2023) of ccsetup618.zip, or is it possible were you using the buggy CCleaner v6.18.10824 (rel. 15-Nov-2023) that was pulled shortly after release? I don't have a "clean" system that has never run CCleaner before so I don't think I can test to see if I can reproduce this problem with CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838. If you have a system with CCleaner Portable v6.18.10838 that is currently running as expected, can you reproduce the problem by deleting all the CCleaner Portable files from their current location (e.g., your hard drive or a removable USB stick), deleting the registry keys at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner, downloading and unzipping a fresh copy of ccsetup618.zip from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds, and then trying to launch the CCleaner Portable v6.18 executable? If one of the CCleaner employees doesn't reply in this thread soon you might want to submit a support request at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general and see if they are aware of this bug. However, you could be waiting quite a while for an answer. I sent a support request on 21-Jul-2023 to ask about the dozens of registry keys that are created at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner by CCleaner Free Portable (which defeats the entire purpose of using the Portable build of this software) and haven't gotten a response. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.18.10838
  10. I don't know if it's relevant, but the buggy v6.18 installers that should have been pulled from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds are currently hosted on bits.avcdn.net, which I assume is an Avast content distribution network. Aren't official builds of CCleaner normally hosted on download.ccleaner.com (e.g., like the Sunset build for Win XP/Vista on that builds page)? It's also possible that Avast / Piriform has deliberately changed the server where the CCleaner Standard and Slim .exe installers are hosted. I can't be certain since I only download the CCleaner Portable build from that builds page, which is a currently a direct download from https://download.ccleaner.com/portable/ccsetup617.zip. ---------------- Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3693 * Firefox v120.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Freee Portable v6.17.10746

  14. Hi 20400: When I run a Custom Clean I can right click anywhere in the white space near my scan results and choose Save to Text File .... to save a file called Log.txt in any location I choose. I can do this after I click the Analyze button if I want to see a preview of what CCleaner is going to clean, or after I click the Run Cleaner button to see what was actually cleaned. As nukecad noted <above>, once you click the Analyze button there is no way to enable / disable individual files that will be removed unless you exclude them. For example, I have enabled the check box at Windows tab | System | Temporary Files so that Custom Clean will delete all my temporary Windows files, but I don't want the file C:\Windows\invcol.tmp removed so I've created an exclusion at Options | Exclude. ---------- Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3570 * Firefox v119.0.1 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23100.2009-1.1.23100.2009 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.6.294-1.0.2189 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.17.10746

  18. Hi Wisewiz: Does that mean that you use the PortableApps.com Platform to manage downloading / installing / updating of all the portable apps you use from that site? I've never tried a "tweaked" app offered by PortableApps (I prefer to use software that's released and supported by the original developer) but if you've installed the PortableApps.com Platform then I'm guessing it creates it own registry entries, even if ccPortable doesn't. Regardless, it would be nice if someone from Piriform / Avast could modify CCleaner Portable v6.x so it doesn't create all this garbage in my registry, or at least explain why it's impossible to create a portable version of CCleaner v6.x that doesn't do this. When I choose to use the portable build of any software I personally don't expect it to have all the "bells and whistles" of the full installed version, and I'd be willing to sacrifice features like Health Check and Driver Updater (which I don't use anyway) if it meant that CCleaner Portable could be deleted without leaving behind orphaned registry keys. ------------- Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3570 * Firefox v118.0.2 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23090.2008-1.1.23090.2007 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.4.286-1.0.2163 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7690 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.17.10746

  22. Hi Crni: I have a 64-bit OS (English) and only use the Custom Clean feature in CCleaner Free Portable, although I do occasionally use the Registry Cleaner if I need to look for stray registry entries that aren't removed when I uninstall a program. The only four files I keep on my removable USB stick after unzipping ccsetup6xx.zip are CCleaner64.exe, portable.dat and License.txt (optional) plus the ccleaner.ini file I copy from my previous CCleaner Portable version since this .ini file contains all my custom configuration settings***. Users who want to use a non-English interface must also keep the \lang subfolder. ------------- Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3448 * Firefox v118.0.1 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23090.2008-1.1.23090.2007 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.4.286-1.0.2163 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7279 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.16.10662
  23. Hi hazelnut: Thanks for the link. Good to know that a future release of UCheck will be able to check for updates for portable apps. I tried UCheck Free Portable v4.10.1.0 today (see my test results in post # 2587348 of Magic66's AskWoody thread KC Softwares – Shutting Down) and it found a significantly higher number of installed programs on my laptop than the 6 programs that Patch My PC was able to detect. I have my fingers crossed that UCheck will be a good replacement for SUMo for me once it's able to scan for portable apps. ----------- Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3324 * Firefox v117.0.1 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23080.2006-1.1.23080.2005 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.2.281-1.0.2131 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7279 * SUMo Free Portable v5.17.10.542 * DUMo Free Portable 2.25.4.125 * Patch My PC Portable v4.5.0.4 * UCheck Free Portable v4.10.1.0
  24. Just an FYI that I stumbled on a new glitch with CCleaner Portable that appears to be caused by a registry entry. I copied and pasted all my portable apps from my old removable USB v2.0 stick (assigned as drive E: when plugged in) to a faster USB 3.0 stick (assigned as drive D: when plugged in). All my other portable apps (SUMo, TreeSize Free, HWiNFO, etc.) ran correctly from the new USB 3.0 stick, but the CCleaner Portable interface would not open when I tried to run CCleaner64.exe even though I could see that the CCleaner64.exe process was listed in Task Manager and consuming CPU and RAM, and I had to kill that process manually in Task Manager to stop it from running. I suspect that CCleaner Portable will only run correctly from my old USB 2.0 stick because the path to CCleaner is stored as E:\Portable\CCleaner instead of D:\Portable\CCleaner in the registry at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner. I can likely fix this by deleting my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform registry keys and starting with a fresh download and unzip of ccsetup615.zip on the USB 3.0 stick but it just illustrates why you don't want portable apps saving settings in the registry. I still haven't had a response to my 21-Jul-2023 support request that I sent to support@ccleaner.com about the registry entries, but according to staffer Peter CCleaner's 06-Sep-2023 post in levikyer's Need Help Cancelling Auto Extension "there was a bit of a backlog with Support requests recently, but they're working through them". Hope springs eternal. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3324 * Firefox v117.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23080.2006-1.1.23080.2005 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.1.280-1.0.2117 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7279 * Cleaner Free Portable v6.15.10623
  25. Hi hazelnet: Thanks for the @mention and the link to Kyle Katarn's comments in the Wilders forum. I've posted that link in Magic66's KC Softwares – Shutting Down in the AskWoody forum so others there are aware that there's still hope that Kyle may allow someone else to take over development of SUMo. Just FYI, I tried Patch My PC as a possible substitute for SUMo and found this utility was almost useless for me because many of my software programs are portable apps that are located on a removable USB stick, which Patch My PC apparently can't scan when it checks for available updates. See my 09-Sep-2023 Request for Additional Software and Detection of Portable Apps (vs SUMo) in the Request New Features or Software board of the Patch My PC forum for details. ------------ Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3324 * Firefox v117.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23080.2006-1.1.23080.2005 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.1.280-1.0.2117 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7279 * SUMo Free Portable v5.17.10.542 * Patch My PC v4.5.0.4
