  1. After running CCleaner it removes all frequently used program icons on my start menu. But it also seems to break that feature. Programs are not added to it anymore and the space stays blank. I was able to fix this once by moving the Start Menu to CLASSIC and the to START MENU, but it seems that CCleaner is doing something to these settings? Any information on this?

    Hello netmation,

    Welcome to the forums. :D

This situation occurs by using the Advanced cleaning options.

    Turn them off.

Reset the number of items to be listed from whatever you have now to something else.

Do this at rt. click Start > Properties > Start Menu > Customize > Number of programs on Start menu > change number.

    Select OK and then Apply.

Your programs should start to fill back in. You can reset the number back to whatever you like.

Only use the Advanced cleaning options when you have a specific Advanced need.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  2. Hello

    Using latest version of CCleaner

    Did Analyze followed by Run.

After that finished  I clicked Registry, Scan for Issue, then I removed all the issues.

Then I clicked Cleaner, clicked analyze (from memory there was about 67.6475KB of what I beleive where logfiles ). Then I clicked Run Cleaner, and that's when I got the following error (I scrolled down, that's why there are two images )

Please fix this bug in your next update.

    Thanks in advance,

    Panarchy

PS: Here are some of my specs

    4GB of RAM

    Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz

    ASUS P5K-E WiFi

    Windows XP 64-bit

    Massive bug. ???

You do a partial Registry clean (Brain Surgery) then you try to get the patient to run a marathon and take a Eye, Ear, co-ordination, and memory test without leaving the surgery room. You don't even let the patient get cleaned up. There may be a bug here but it is awful hard to tell if it is in the machine or operator.

  3. I am sure to get some interesting answers but at least I know you can't throw things.

I was digging around in the registry yesterday - a thing I almost never do - and noticed quite a few folders with old software titles that have not been on my system for a long time. They were holding loads of stuff. Can I just delete them? :)

    The silence is deafening.

It depends on what they are. You know that.

Just going for a stroll through the Registry, huh. Famous last words.

Seriously, consider installing some pre-install Uninstall software. Then re-install and run a few laps and then use the software manufactures uninstall methods and tools. Then use the Uninstaller software to cleanup.

Or exit Regedit and forget about it.

The folders I would temp backup and dump after the prior steps.

  4. Hi guys ;)

When I Log In to say> "Pirifom Forums" I always enter my (user-name & password) manually.

I herd that you could "copy & past" user-names & passwords into the required boxes from a notepad text file? would this be safe to do?

Do you want them stored anywhere other than in the "little gray cells"?

  5. Hi,

I'm using Windows XP SP3, IE7, and CCleaner 2.11.636. I upgraded CCleaner, and it doesn't appear to keep any of the cookies I ask it to keep. For instance, I ask it to keep my Yahoo, my Verizon, and a few other cookies that I keep on a regular basis. While it's not the end of the world, it's definitely frustrating. Where should I look to fix this, and what other information might someone need to help me?

    Thanks!

    Hello Chip Stroll,

    Welcome to the Forums. :D

Are you looking into your "Cookies" folder, immediately after running the Clean.

Any other browsers or add-ons that may have options set to clean these areas ?

Do you actually see these cookies to be deleted in the Analysis listing ?

    :) davey

  6. Thanks Davey and Augeas. After analyse and remove CC says there are no bytes to be removed. Could you explain Davey what you mean by 'other users areas'

    please

"Other users" can be found at Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.

You may have an "Administrator" , plus "YourName", Plus "Guest", plus "Other User #1"

It all depends how many "user accounts" are setup on your PC.

I was helping another member clean up his PC and I failed to remind him to clean up the other users areas.

One other user had 1 1/2 GB tied up. :P This was a considerable amount for a 20 GB hard drive.

You must run CCleaner for each user by logging in as that user and running CCleaner.

Follow Augeas directions and apply it to the other users profiles also.

  7. Hello, all! I've been using Defraggler for about a month, and I just dl'd the newest version today.

Thank you, and keep up the good work!

    Hi Flapjacks,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know.

Also thanks for the details, this helps us other members.

Your avatar looks very well "defragmented". It drives me crazy !!!

  8. Download Adobe Flash Player un-installer then close all browser windows then run the un-install utility:

    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewConten...rnalId=tn_14157

Run Secunia Online Software Inspector to see that you have no vulnerable applications:

    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online

Thanks Yokenny but I don't have Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.12.36 installed.

So I don't have to worry about Un-installing it.

I have Secunia PSI installed and run it 2 times a month.

    CeeCee Thanks for the update.

  9. Sorry, I never mentioned I"m using XP SP3.

Thanks for the help. If there's anything more you can help me with don't hesitate to do so.

    Thanks again.

If you promise to keep coming back with some Big Hot Dogs for all of us, we won't hesitate at all.

I like Root Beer also. :P

Seriously, come back for any reason.

  10. The problem is I have to re-enter all my user names and passwords whenever I shut down (restart) my PC. This is very annoying, to say the least, so before I go off on a big quest to solve my problem, I'd like to know if this problem is known, or if there is no compatibility with IE8 Beta.

    Thanks for the help.

EDIT: BTW, I deleted CCleaner from my PC and then downloaded it again after I installed IE8 Beta. I also noticed this website runs really sluggish with IE8 Beta, but just fine with MSN Explorer.

    Hello Solid Lifters,

    Welcome to the Forums. :D

Disk4mat did quite a bit of checking into this and the posts in this thread should help you decide what you need to do. The problem is being caused by IE8 Beta.

Checkout Posts #35 thru 41 at least. Depending on your OS you may try turn off delete index.dat option or guarantee non-deletion of the "Cookies" index.dat file by using CCleaner Exclude Option.

  11. Hello all:

I'm a noobie when it comes to Degraggler and I'm wondering if I'm able to defrag parts of my hard drive whilst working on other programs, files, etc at the same time? If so, this is a flipping fantastic program!

Any help, suggestions, etc are very much appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Daniel in Tulsa

    aka siouxdax

    Hi siouxdax,

    Welcome to the Forums. :D

Seems like you are well pleased with Defraggler so far. That's great.

See my post and then checkout Andavari's Defraggler shell. The link is there.

Yes, I have Defraggled while working on other things. I only defrag files and folders. I am not sure if this is what you mean. I never have to do a disk defrag anymore.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

P.S. I ,from decades of experience, will not do a complete disk defrag while running other applications.

I still find 24 hours per day is sufficient to do anything.

  12. I followed a link from MSN to cnet and downloaded it from there. What sucks is that I did back up the registry, but I put it into my documents which got deleted.

    Hi Dan,

    Welcome to the Forums.

    Sorry for the reason, though.

First hard lesson about downloading for some people.

Only download software from the authors website or his provided official mirror sites.

This problem has occurred several times in the past month for various software.

I don't know why MSN would be referring you to Cnet for a CCleaner download instead of referring you directly to CCleaner.com .

You are the victim of a very malicious program and/or person. Software can be planted and it won't run until your next startup.

Your copy of CCleaner may have been entirely clean. Your PC maybe entirely clean now. BUT, you need some professional advice from the Spyware Hell Forum. The malicious program may have erased itself but who knows. I don't know what may happen to other users when they log on. You need Professional advice before you get "screwed" again. You may want to post with your story first before trying anything else on that PC. You were definitely "screwed" maybe from closer than you think. I am not sure.

  13. I don't understand the explanation. :(

I think he uses the word "defragmentation" instead of "fragmentation".

    Hello NewHaunter,

Also accept my Welcome to the Forums. :D

You "understood" my explanation perfectly. It was worded incorrectly.

What can I say about my original post but that you are exactly correct.

I did use the word "defragmentation" three or four times when it should have been "fragmentation".

I have corrected the post. Please check it and see if it makes more sense now.

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=110791

These links are great to learn what "defragmentation" is for and when best to do it. Also covers Free Space fragmentation.

  14. I would like to know why you say the CCleaner is free download but when you go to download you have to give money ????

I feel that every person should be given the OPTION to donate or not....

I understand the reasonings for why but I feel that it is false advertising..

    <_<

    Hello rlugo88,

CCleaner is a completely free product. The download page does present PayPal as a reminder that your help is needed, not demanded or required.

Are you downloading from this webpage ? http://www.CCleaner.com/download

You do not have to donate at all. Just click on the download site and continue with your download.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

    P.S. How's things in Maggie Valley ?

  15. Davey -

Windows failing to shut down re-occured over the weekend.

    OK Seth,

#1 To assist in evaluating can you give us a snapshot.

Go to CCleaner Tools > Startup. Give us a snap shot please.

It will help to get this snapshot NOW and post it back ASAP.

#2 We need a snap-shot of Task manager the next time this happens. We need to see everything in Task manager. This includes each tab in Task Manager.

Something else I would recommend is a free program called WhatsRunning. The name says it all.

You can use this to take snapshots and other uses. As with other tools do not use different tools to maintain similar items. I use only CCleaner to maintain my Startup entries.

This tools has helped me learn a lot and it still does.

    http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/main.aspx

Like any other website ignore any free scans. PLEASE,Only use free scans that we recommend on the forums.

This will come in handy when this shutdown conflict occurs.

Be ready to take snapshots when needed the next time this occurs.

Lastly, CCleaner is not preventing you from shutting down. It is the long process that we must find and correct.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  16. I finally got a chance to run Windows Defrag and that seems to have helped. I was able to run Defraggler just fine. It runs so much faster than Windows Defrag. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Thom,

Glad to hear things are OK for you now.

I just wanted be sure that you understood that the Chkdsk was not intended to make Defraggler run or not run. It really was to do an important step as regards all your Hard Drives. If you have more Hard Drives also run Chkdsk on them as well.

I have found over the past year that many new Users come to use CCleaner and Defraggler because their PC is not behaving as normal. Sometimes this is all they need to get things flying again.

But some users encounter more problems due to the fact that they have some disk errors that need to be fixed.

It is important to pay attention to the results of the Chkdsk as this may indicate problems that may continue, slowly or quickly, and special steps must be taken to backup all data before a Hard Drive crash occurs.

Thanks for your follow-up as this helps us all.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  17. Here is the screenshot of what i got disabling the AdHunter feature in Maxthon.

    maxthonshoteq9.th.jpgthpix.gif

IMO this is the so called 'adsense by Google'. Clicking the up/down arrows other advertising are shown,

all related to 'registry cleaning', 'speed up your pc', and so on...

Like you, Whiteshark, your screen-shot depicts what I always see when I turn off Ad Blocker in IE7Pro.

Notice the difference in the font from "tcoffeep" 's screen-shot of the words "Ads by Google".

Perhaps this is a "locational" thing ???

Google, Filehippo.com, who ??? Someone has been compromised somehow.

    :) davey

  18. Thank you all for the screenshots, advice and irony :D

All together it makes a nice warm welcome for a ne....wbie.

    CU all soon -s-

    You are welcome.

Developers who use such trickery to get customers should note the negative impact that this has upon their "Questionable reputation".

Of course there is always the excuse of "plausible denial". We will see.

P.S. There is something very strange in the "Ads by Google" printing at the top of the screen-shot supplied by member "tcoffeep" at Filehippo.com versus the "real words" as normally seen in such windows.

This is very suspicious, indeed !!!

  19. Am running 1.03.094 and it keeps crashing when I try to use the menus (eg to display the drive map legend) if it's analyzing or building the file list at the time. sad.gif So far it hasn't crashed while actually defragging (phew!!)

Followed the debug instructions and it came up with "Piriform Defraggler [DEBUG 1]" in the window title, but nothing at the bottom (just "Check for Updates...") It didn't create the file. C:\Program Files\Defraggler\ contains just CCleaner.exe and uninst.exe. Am logged on as the same user that installed CCleaner and can copy files to the Defraggler folder so don't think there's a permissions issue.

When I get it into debug mode should I try crash it or just open and close?

FYI: re the instructions above: "Press and hold the Start button and press R (opens the Run window)" only works if there's no other program beginning "R".

    Many thanks

    Malcolm

Moved my reply from the Announcements thread to here. :) davey

    Hi BioImages,

I just tested it and it creates the debug file each time.

The instructions were made the way that they are because some users don't have the Run icon on their Start up menu.

It sounds like you were in Debug mode. Did you notice the little debug window in the middle of the screen ?

It may be that you need to reply there, and then the Debug text file is created.

Run the Defraggler just the way that causes your crash.

Put your Post at the bottom of that thread by clicking on ADD REPLY below the last reply.Do it the way the other members have done it.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

P.S. I just tested again. You may have to wait a little for that window to appear because it is going to connect and check for updates. AS soon as I get the window I look inside Defraggler folder and the new text file is shown but you cannot access it until Defraggler is finished. :P

Don't forget to explain what you did and then what happens.

  20. Thanks for your help everyone!

Thanks for the follow-up. This is just the information many others need to see.

Just keep in mind that the "prefetch" files take a little while to rebuild properly. This will affect the running of your other applications.

IE6 was nothing short of a nightmare in my experience. IE7 ended so many problems I couldn't believe it.

Many large company IT administrators were upset that IE7 was not part of SP3. They were hoping MS would save them the effort but there are too many other companies with IE6 dependencies to do this.

    :) davey

  21. I could see how that ad could snag someone into thinking they were downloading the software they originally intended to download. Pretty damned sloppy, the ad should have some separation from the other page content.

Of course, you don't think that the advertiser knew exactly what they were doing when they set up that ad do you ???:lol::lol:

    :) davey

  22. OK - I'll try IE7 and IE7Pro and see if that takes care of it. If not, I'll do the checkmark thing and enable them one at a time.

I'll let you know what happens...

    Hi TechDeck,

    Welcome to the forums. :D

It is great to hear from members for the first time. I try to keep a viewpoint of a new user and your report reminded me of the same that happened to me.

Have you checked off your "cookies to keep" at Options > Cookies. This helps some but if I recall properly the culprit may be index.dat files being cleaned and "prefetch files". I am not sure what Windows does and where it gets it's info to build new index.dat files but this problem will go away.

I did an inordinate amount of "cleaning" and "deleting" a year ago because this PC had no maintenance since new 3 1/2 years earlier. I had the same situation that you described.

You will learn here, do not mess with the "Prefetch" files. Windows does a perfect job of handling these. Messing with them will do nothing beneficial. It will slow down many things, considerably. "Prefetch" is your friend not your enemy.

Turn off any Advanced cleaning options if you have them turned on.

Best thing that happened to me was IE7 and IE7Pro. :D And of course CCleaner !!! :P

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  23. There are not thousands of files but a considerable number. Yes, I look at the files after running CC but my IE is closed. I do have a number of cookies retained in the exclusion section but the files to which a refer do not only relate to these but others which are excluded

    Hi Arley,

You may also have some Temporary Internet Files for other users that are not deleted, yet.

When is the last time that you cleaned out the other users areas ?

    Good luck,

    :) davey
