  1. Thanks Davey I will give defraggler a go.

    Hi Steve,

I am glad that I could get back to your first post and give you an answer.

Congratulations on trying out "Defraggler" !!!

I think you will be very happy with it.

Here is link to one of my (in-depth? :P ) replies to a member about "Defragmentation" and "defrag" products.

If like me, you are not a "Command line " proficient user then I highly recommend Andavari's Defraggler Shell. This allows point and click to defrag files, folders and disks. We get to have our cake and eat it, too!

  2. I have successfully installed CCleaner on my Vista 64 machine. It appears to run fine but two things concern me:

    1. There is a note on the site expressing caution about using the product on a Vista 64 Machine

    2. In my system I came up with an amazing number of errors to repair.

Are there any known issues preventing me from just hittin "Fix"?

    Hi Hesh13,

    Welcome to the forums. :D

We enjoy new members like you because of the great questions that you submit.

Answer 1. This note is Piriform's way of being straight forward with it's millions and potentially as many more user's. I have been a "new user" for 10 months now and when I first started there were a few problems reported each week by XP 64 and Vistas 64 bit users. These problems did seem to be specific to them. Over time I have seen less and less 64 bit problems being reported. These problems were all minor problems that were found and fixed. Lately there have been few if any 64-bit specific problems being reported.

Answer 2. Having Issues found is one thing and "repairing" them is another. MOST users have "Issues" reported. Do they require "fixing" ? NO, in most cases. The majority of all "Issues" are all a build up of "orphaned" entries over time. They do not take up much space or slow down MOST users systems to any noticeable degree. Since you have asked then I would feel it is "safest for you" to leave these "Issues" alone. They are only significant to those that do many, many installs and uninstalls of sometimes "dubious software products".

I would not use "any" Registry changing software without first being secure with good "Backup" and "Recovery" procedures in place, in use and well understood. We care about all our users.

  3. I have a list of 14 ActiveX Controls and all enabled. To navigate within IE7 to this point I clicked: Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons and then select "Downloaded Active Controls" from the drop-down list.

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi razz,

I use this off and on during the day. It introduces many things to new users without them having to know much about Windows Explorer to check out their systems. Beginners rule #1 I teach never delete anything if you can just "disable" it.

Read about it and use it.

  4. Hi

I have been using Auslogic disc defrag is defraggler any better Auslogic is very fast and seems to do a good job.

    Hi Steve,

This link may show why it "seems" to be so fast. It is not doing a very good job of actually defragmenting and its reports are questionable also.

    http://donnedwards.openaccess.co.za/2007/0...ogics-disk.html

    http://donnedwards.openaccess.co.za/2007/1...isk-defrag.html

The Windows Disk Defragmenter does better in all areas.

"Defraggler" is much faster at "actually defragging files or disks."

Auslogics does not do whole disks.

  5. Don't fret. I'll just be doing it as a test to see if it's the culprit. I can live with the situation as long as I know why it happens. As far as Yokenny's questions? IE7, SP3, 1 gig RAM, CPU usage (unsure as how to determine?) Aside from this I'm not stopping programs "caput" prior to using c cleaner. I'm not using it anydifferently now than when I did prior to getting the last few new updated versions. It just stated to behave this way suddenly.

    BTD

Well this is certainly turning out to be another challenging quirk.

All suggestions so far had showed some promise. I do think you should turn off Check for updates for a couple of days. It could be an ISP or server thing happening now.

Did you have SP3 installed for awhile before this started ?

Could it have started after a "Patch Tuesday" for instance ?

You might also consider installing Visual C++ again . Something may be corrupted. It is quick and worth trying. Take your pick. I use the latest as it has some smaller, faster programs. Do the REBOOT also.

  6. Thanks for the complements. I've been hanging out at MaximumPC.com and their forums. Learning a lot. You all should join their Folding@Home team, cause they're ranked about 5th in the world.

Any questions for me? Post them here.

    AJ

    Hi AJ,

Just found your Post this evening.

It is very comforting to know the wonderful things that you and your peers are achieving in the brief time that you have been at college.

Thank you for your update. As you know, we all appreciate the contributions made our young members on this forum also.

I checked out the Folding@Home article at Wikipedia. I was re-reading the "Purpose" section when I had quite an "emotional realization" of how this work affects all our lives and the one's we love. It sure is amazing and reassuring to realize that mankind has reached the point where all those involved, from every part of the world, can come together and take part in the research and benefits of such a project. I can't think of anyone that I know that is not somehow affected by these diseases.

We have come a long way and so have our children.

I will be joining such a project. I promise.

I will be able to let my family and friends know that I am doing valuable, medical research for Stanford University. Pretty impressive, huh ? :P

We are not surprised that you have been chosen to be Freshman IT representative. You are capable of handling the various responsibilities.

Hugs to you and your parents,

    :) davey

P.S. For a still-growing man like you, a "cache" of "Peanut Butter and Jelly" is always required.

A good supply of milk is also recommended.

A little "Fun" is essential. :Dhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjionp0erdA...feature=related

  7. Thanx Davey and Yokenny for your reply. You made me think back....I did change from AVG antivirus to Avira. That could be the culprit. Other than that change I'm not having any other probs with my pc, i.e. browswer, etc. I'll shut down Avira on my next c cleaner use and see if that makes a difference. :D

    Whoa !!!

No body is going to think it is a good idea to turn off your A/V "real-time" scanning just to get CCleaner to start a little quicker.

You can do it as a "test" but I don't want anyone to turn off their A/V for any reason if at all possible.

The time it takes to turn off and to turn back on ,if you remember to do it, is going to be just as long as waiting a little bit for CCleaner to start. At least, that is my thoughts.

After " testing" don't make it a habit, please. There are too may "Bad Things" going around to take the risk that you forget to turn it back on. I have forgotten to do this myself on occasions. Luckily I was visiting the Piriform forums at the time. :P

Do let us know the outcome of your "test" but I have not heard of any problem like this with other Avira users.

    :) davey

P.S. Your answers to YoKenny's questions at least are important for proper assistance.

My questions are to stir your thoughts but the answers are also needed to help you.

  8. You could try this:

    Click Start,

    Click Control Panel,

    Double Click Network Connections,

Right click your wireless connection, then click properties,

In the box that says "This connection uses the following items:", click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click the properties button.

Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected.

OK your way out of all the boxes and hopefully all will be good after that.

    Hi Sparky,

Where were you when I needed you on the similar problem the other day ?

I will definitely put this thread in my files.

Let see. How does it go ?

    Oh yeah, CHEERS MATE !

    :) davey

  9. I am very unsure here of what is needed. "Edit" them? I went to SystemProperties > Environment Variables. The box at the top, User variables for Owner shows this:

    TEMP C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp

    TMP C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp

There is an "Edit" button below what you are describing. It should show the actual value as I listed. This way it will work for any user not just OWNER.

Is that what I was to "Edit" or check? Looking in Windows Explorer the Temp and Tmp folders are exactly where you stated. Do you agree that everything is as it should be, then?

I don't understand "copy the whole Folder and then Delete everything in it." The Temp folder? Copy it why? Copy it to where? Name the copy something else? Scariest of all is the idea of deleting it. There are 308 objects there. It is full of folders - with stuff in them, Temporary Directories for programs I've downloaded, .dlls, .exes. Is that really what you mean I should do? :o Delete it?

Can't blame you for being unsure. The reason you want a copy is to have a "backup" in case you need it.

However, I did not realize that you wanted to keep any of that data in the /Temp folder.

Just be aware of the fact that for some (lucky?) reason, you have folders and files in a "temporary" area.

These are not files that you are depending on for 'active, actual, productive reasons" are they. If so, you definitely need to "copy" that whole folder for back-up purposes.

I am not sure why CCleaner has not cleaned them out in your case. It would have cleaned them out of my \Temp file. I would at least make a "copy" and put it somewhere that you would like it to be. Who knows "tomorrow" that \Temp folder could disappear, vanish. It is a temp file and they have way of being temporary. At least you will have your own Backup copy".

I thought all your "shareware" stuff was now being put somewhere else. How about setting up another folder and calling it \SharewareTemp . Sorry, wish I understood more about the general practices of "shareware' software.

This is an example of WHY some users that have used CCleaner and then report that their "active production" files and programs etc. have disappeared. It is because the files and programs were stored in "temporary" ares and not someplace "safe" or "normal" like \Program Files for example and \Application Data.

We need the advice of more "Shareware" experienced users, please !!!

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  10. For some reason my last 2 versions have been very slow to open/initialize. It generally takes more than 60 sexonds to open. Once opened up, it works fine. What's wrong?? :(

    Hi BTD,

In addition to Yokenny's questions please answer these questions also.

Are you "Stopping, ending, exiting all programs Caput" except Security and Firewall programs before trying to start CCleaner ? {This includes programs running in the background that you may not be aware of at the time. Use Task Manager to check.)

Also some A/V 'Real time" scanners do not get along well with CCleaner because CCleaner does so many things that make it "suspect" to the "scanners'. What did you change in regards to software or hardware 2 versions ago ?

What security programs are you running "real-time" ?

Also some browsers are very slow to stop. What browsers are you using ?

    :) davey

  11. Deleting Internet Explorer's index.dat file like you've stated won't effect your browsing speed.

It could be an issue with your Internet connection. Typically when mine goes to an annoyingly slow state I try out three things:

    1. Restart Windows to see if that fixes it, if it doesn't work I move on to #2:

    2. Use this command in a command prompt to release and renew the IP address:

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

if that also fails I move on to #3:

    3. Unplug the modem from it's electrical connection, wait about one minute, then plug it back in.

    I agree with you both.

Andavari, your three steps are exactly what is needed after a complete CCleaner cleaning.

The order is exact also in my experience. Usually step number 1 is all that is needed.

I would suggest prior to the CCleaner run a quick file "defrag" also. This makes more large chunks of "free space" available after the CCleaner run. This gives better performance after the "reboot" of browsers, caches, etc.

    :) davey

  12. Hi davey,

    I agree with you.

If the author of this post is only looking for a safe way to "defrag" his registry (for what is worth); here is a reliable (and safe) link to do so. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

No, I do not think that the member is looking to "defrag" the Registry which is a very special task in itself.

You will find many, many users using ERUNT to backup the Registry and NTREGOPT to compact the Registry just as you have said. Thanks for the reminder and link.

I think the member is concerned that CCleaner does not "fix" the Registry.

I don't know of any reliable, safe Registry programs that actually "fix" a Registry entry. I do know that I would never trust a program to do that.

All that would be accomplished is "changing" an entry, not "fixing" it in any fashion. You would still be left with an "issue" that needs to be reviewed.

    Hi Cricket,

Just wanted say thanks. I think you are the first member to call me "hun" since I have been around here for

approximately 11 months. I have almost used that term myself a couple of times when responding to members. It would sound a little strange to some if they are not from a little town up U.S. route 1 from where I live. It is called Baltimore,Maryland . Up there everyone is a "hun".

    Ever been to Ball-tee-moore ??? :P

It sounds perfectly natural for you to use it. I love to hear it.

Thanks hun and we are glad to have you as member,

  14. Does the program target duplicate files for removal?

    Hi Foxy,

CCleaner does not look for any duplicate files specifically.

If they happen to be in areas specified for cleaning then they would be deleted just as any other file.

  15. Hi.

No update problems at all, no system errors nada. all is running sweet. SP3 Final Standalone, but CCleaner was working fine until a few weeks ago. All 6 pcs here in UK and Canada, all wont secure wipe every time.

I just made a discovery tho !! If i dont run analyze first and go straight to clean it seems to work ok. Fingers crossed eh.

Thanks for the new information. This will very useful for other WinXP SP3 64 bit platform users.

May be of use to the "Bug Fixers" also.

What edition of WinXP are you using ?

Pro, Home, or Media Center or is Final Standalone an edition that I just don't recognize?

    Are all 6 PCs 64-bit platform ?

    Thanks again, :) davey

  16. Hi Davey,

I didn't use the Advanced cleaning options. Everything on the start menu is still there, it's just the desktop that's been cleared out. I tried your refresh suggestion, but nothing reappeared.

Wait, I just now looked under "Arrange icons by," and "show desktop icons" was unchecked. I wonder how that happened?

Anyway, everything is back now. Thanks for your suggestions.

You are welcome and I am glad everything is OK.

This is the most important suggestion. All members should have this Bookmarked.

It helps you find more and do more with it.

This link will also help you in your "searches" of the forums.

Fill in your search criteria in quotes like this "Advanced cleaning" for example.

Down at the bottom right you will find Result Type Show results as topics or Show results as posts.

Click on Show results as posts (This is important). Now click on the "Perform the search".

Now you have a useful display of various threads to work with.

  17. Ah, look what happens when you give us all these options...

I selected zero byte, system and deleted files and ran a normal scan, which returned 13067 files. I then selected scan for undeleted files, and the total went up to 47406. Tek wun from 'tother, as they say in Yorkshire (oh do keep up, Davey) and you get 34339 undeleted files.

Yet when I run a virus scan it scans 67000 files. I haven't run an a/v scan recently, but I know I haven't dumped some 33000 files. So why doesn't Recuva show all the undeleted files?

Tek wun from 'tother, as they say in Yorkshire .

Hey, I like that. I going to have to practice. It sounds like "All Creatures Great and Small" to me. :P

    Lovely words. :P

As far as the virus scan counts, who knows what methods of madness lies in the hearts and minds of these scan developers. One says 990,000 and another says 48,000 and another says .....????

Now, I am sure Recuva developers have their reasons also. I trust Recuva figures more than A/V scanners.

    Wutcha tink ?

    :) davey

  18. Hello everyone, I was just wondering, is it true that the CCleaner registry cleaner is BAD? I've heard ALOT of rumours etc saying not to use the reg cleaner because it only DELETES the entry not actually FIX it.

Is this true? Could anyone confirm this?

(Btw, LOVE CCleaner, thanks for making the program)

    -Luis

    Hi Luis,

Many people think that Registry programs are Fixers. This is due to misleading advertisement and misinformed word of mouth user-to-user.

When your Registry is broken and needs fixing then you are in serious trouble.

When it happens you will know about it very soon.

CCleaner's Registry issues function is used to identify possible "issues". The user then decides what to do about these "issues". Removing these "issues" can result in saving some bytes here and there and resulting in a smaller Registry when compacted.

"Advanced Users" that do a lot of software testing and these users benefit the most from using this.

MOST users get very little benefit from such use and risk getting themselves into trouble.

MOST users are best advised to leave the Registry alone. It is an area for "specific users" to investigate.

I agree with you. CCleaner is the best, safest and quickest PC "cleaner" there is.

    Celebration!!! see this link. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/awards/index.php?pageId=16

    Best wishes,

    :) davey

  19. EDIT: Forgot to mention, Dial-a-fix is something you hope just lays there never needing to be used, but it's a cracking tool to have ready at your disposal, that can fix a myriad of problems.

Yes, razz as Dennis so importantly points out Dial-a-fix is not recommended as far as applying everything as you can lose some settings that you want to keep.

You "may" need everything if your PC is really fouled up.

Most times you use a specific fix for a specific problem.

Don't want users to think that it is "normal" to run Dial-a-fix as a scheduled event or something. :o

    It is a 'serious" program.

Thank you, mcooke@DjLizard.net for creating a program that saves us so much time, money, and effort.
