  1. After recently running CCleaner I can no longer login to sites such as Hotmail, Facebook, Yahoo Mail etc. Also some websites, such as accomaodation sites, wont allow me to view their booking screens. There must be something common to the types of sites that I can not access.

I think that, in my naieviety, I have allowed CCleaner to change something on the compluter that now means that I can not access these sites. Does anyone have any idea what it might be and if so how to fix it?

One friend has said it is to do with Firewall settings. This happened once before after runnign CCleaner and said friend was able to fix the issue but this time can't remember exactly what they did. I'm running Windows XP. if that is important.

    Cheers

    Gareth

    Hi Gareth,

First thing to do is turn off Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player on the Cleaner > Applications tab. This is the most likely culprit.

Briefly, "Flash Cookies" are becoming more and more common since the data they contain is encrypted.

These are stored by Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player.

You can do a "search" for "Macromedia" or "flask cookies" on the forums for more info.

    Cheers,

Come back and let us know how you did and what else we can help you with. There are lots of easy things to learn. One step at time.

P.S. You will have to reactivate or renew (whatever they call it) so their computer will store this information again on your PC.

Look here and you will find folders that contain all these .SOL files. Yes, even some men's favorite sites are storing things there. Sorry guys you are going to have Include these in your CCleaning Options > Include or some very explicit .com names are going to be in your PC. Or vice-versa you clean it all and Exclude the ones you want to keep.

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\96XXX5R2 This last part is different per user

  2. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any legitimate work from home opportunities like data entry or medical transcription or well, anything really. I keep finding all these listings but you have to pay money for them and I don't think that's such a good idea. lol

You can always sell 1 GB Flash Drives on E-Bay and say that they are 16 GB .

You can do it from home. Then you get the other phony dealers to put in good comments about how great and trustworthy you are . They do that all the time and get away with it. Of course they disappear until next week and now they call themselves John Doe #2 Inc.

Of course E-Bay has no control or responsibility in this do they?

  3. Hi Davey

Thank you for your reply please find below a short list ( about 5% ) of the items that show after the updates have been performed. As stated before none of these appear before I have performed the updates.

I'm hoping you can enlighten me as to why this is now happening.

    Thanking you in anticipation

Just so that you understand, I am a member and user just like you. I am not part of the program team at all.

I help by collecting information that will help the " BUG fixers" determine if and where some fixes need to be made.

There are some more answers needed also. You can put your reply right along side or under each question.

Did you actually use the prior versions since you have used the new versions ?

The Prior version does not produce these results NOW, TODAY ?

Do you get issues for each option or only the Ones you have provided so far ?

If other options have issues list some snippets please at the bottom of your reply.

What OS version and edition and 32-bit or 64-bit do you use?

How long have you been using CCleaner?

What was the prior version of CCleaner that you used?

We will let you know what the "bug fixers" report after they see your other answers.

    Thanks, Godwnona for your help.

  4. Hi everybody,,

I downloaded the new version of CCleaner and ran it and ever since I ran it, I have been getting problems logging into my email accounts saying the site's certificate has expired. For example when I use Mozilla Firefox and login to Comcast.net for my email it won't let me but if I use Internet Explorer it will let me by giving me the error window and I select the botton not recommended this site could be bad die to security certificate. Does anybody have any suggestions.

    Thanks Joe

    Hi jkurilla,

I think this may be coincidental. This is a first to my knowledge.

It may be an FF3 thing but you may have accidentally clicked something.

At Internet Options > Advanced tab click on the "Restore advanced settings" button.( DO NOT accidentally click Reset...) Then click on "Apply" then OK.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

  5. Thank you all for your comments. I will download the free version now.

    Razz,

Please pass all the knowledge and information on to those you can.

No, not everybody has to be an expert about Malware or the latest bug etc.

They need to know such threats exist and how prolific they are. They need good Internet "surfing" practices.

They need to know how easy it is to protect themselves and their loved from ones from such threats.

The Internet is a new environment on this planet. There is a battle going on against criminals just like all other environments. Most people are educated as they grow-up how to protect themselves, what to look for and beware of.

The same educational process is going on here. The criminals are taking advantage of this new environment as much as they can.

To all reading this. Protect yourself and others. Pass it on.

    Thanks,

    :) davey

P.S. I almost forgot until YoKenny's following post reminded me. HAVE SOME FUN TOO ! that's an order. :P

  6. I do this on all 3 of my XP systems once in a while to tune up the registry without problems on any of them.

I find that MOST users don't do that much software changing to get any benefits from so called "Registry tuning".

Most of these commercial so called "Registry Tuners" or "Registry Cleaners" or "Registry Boosters" are a bunch of crap marketed just like old fashioned "snake oil"." Hey Your Registry looks terrible. This will fix it, clean it , tune it up etc etc."

Well friends MOST users have some extra "stuff" in the Registry. Most people have a little mud and "stuff" on the bottom of their cars also. Will the car perform better without this little bit of mud ? Of course it will.

It will be totally unnoticeable to anyone because the change is so minimal.

Now the guy that get tons of mud needs some cleaning.

MOST PC users do not need to touch the Registry at all.

Messing with the Registry can cause many unwanted problems, data loss, time loss, and money loss.

:) davey Just some "brotherly" advice to MOST PC users.

  7. When I went to download.com to download it, it states "Free to try; $24.95 to buy". Is there a totally free version?

    Also, do you recommend it?

    Thanks for your time!

Like the other members I can't say more than enough good things about "Malwarebytes".

It is free for scanning purposes and Quarantine and/or Removal of what it finds.

I actually update (fresh copy everyday) and "Quick scan" everyday. Takes 7 - 8 minutes total update and scan.

I also suggest frequent visiting of their forum or joining as I have.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=30

Download free just click on Download link(right in the middle of your screen)

  8. Because So many people now use CCleaner at the behest of "Technical Support" (READ TEXTBOOK-JOCKEYS) and just delete everything it finds Perhaps a (GAG icon8.gif) warning screen needs to pop up when they open the registry part (with a check box don't show this again (Saved in the reg or ini) for us who KNOW what the heck1 we are doing.

1Ha as I write this I become LESS angry <_<

Agree on all points. Why dosent the Online Help link from CC UI include the user guide? Clicking 'Online Help' takes you to: http://www.CCleaner.com/help where you have Quick Tour, FAQ and Forum.

On that note why not include the Help File with the install? Its only 71 KB uncompressed.

The FAQ needs some updating too. In terms of common problems users experience as well as common myths. I've seen CC get blamed for numerous problems that go beyond the scope of CC's abilities.

Maybe we as users should get together and create some documentation? CC Advanced Cleaning: Best Practices & Troubleshooting

I agree also and will give what support I can to such an effort.

    :) davey

  9. Well wether I remove them or not it doesnt fix the issue that it didnt do it before i downloaded the latest updates.

So do I just go on using the outdated version or versions why the hell have updates if they are not going to work.

    Hi Godwnona,

    Thanks for the report.

Of course some peoples PC are going to respond differently to updates than others.

In your case there is apparently a big change as regards Registry issues.

Remember, we are users just like you and contribute our time and knowledge to help others.

This work also helps to improve the program itself.

CCleaner is very important in helping everyday users get the most benefits from their computers for "free".

Not "free" just in cost but also keeps the new technologies affordable and usable by greater numbers of "free"

thinking individuals like you and me. This is a great step forward in the freedom of all peoples.

Please help us out by providing a list or snippets or some "snapshots" of what is being reported when you use the Registry Issues function.

    Thanks and best wishes,

    :) davey

P.S. As advised by the other members, I would use the latest version but I would not do any deleting of Registry Issues.

  10. Davey ~ As far as I am aware regedit was not open and I have tried since both ways and get the same error message on merge.

Nergal ~ I am running a single PC with no other users. I am shown as administrator and no guests

    ------------------------

    Is this relevant?

One of the "errors" for correction was <unused file extension | .xml| HKCU\Software|Microsoft|windows|CurrentVersion|explorer|FileExts|.xml

(I have about 2000 .xml files) and when I *do* open it in regedit it shows: (default) . . . . REG_SZ

    but trying to open "sub-key"

    OpenWithProgids

gives an error message: Cannot open OpenWithProgids: Error while opening key.

    Bob.

    Hi Bob,

    You might try this first.

    http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/reset-th...-in-windows-xp/

You may also need this to restore .reg file associations.

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

I stayed to send this but I have to go. Others will always assist you also.

    :) davey

P.S. Turn off Unused file extentions in Registry issues also if you are going to continue using it. At least until get a little more experience. You must be getting there because you pointed out some important things. :P

  11. Hi,

after defragging my harddisc there should be 2 fragmented files with 12 fragments. But in the detailed screen with the nice red squares there are mor then 70 fragments. Please have a look at the screenshot.

Is this a bug or are there wurmholes on my harddisc?

    nightbee

    Hi Nightbee,

How do like your worms? Over easy or well-done ? Just kidding. I think there is a bug when defragginng the "whole drive" . I have noticed such misleading figures but I am not positive that it was a cut and dried type thing. I may have defragged some files and stopped. Then came back to original window and selected defrag there. I had a few interruptions and I can't recall exactly. But I definitely had some weird figures as your snap shot shows.

Do you remember the exact sequence that you performed ?

    :) davey

  12. Currently when you check the box 'Delete Index.dat Files' it includes the index.dat's located in the 2 cookie folders. Thats why its plural. I was suggesting to have

Delete Index.dat (for the file located in Content.IE5) and a separate Delete Index.dat (for the 2 cookie folders). The cookies checkbox deletes the actual cookies and not the index.dat files located in the cookies folder.

Edit: Basically if your going to keep/exclude cookies you have to either make the file exclusions for the index files in the cookies folder or uncheck delete index.dat files altogether.

    Hello guys,

Disk4mat, from my experience with WinXP Pro SP3, I think it either a Vista/CCleaner thing or a Vista/CCleaner/IE8 thing because I am never shown the index.dat for the "Cookies" file to be deleted nor is it deleted as far as I can determine. My "Cookies to keep" are always left in my "Cookies" file along with the index.dat file and a desktop.ini file. I always have Delete index.dat under Internet Explorer ticked.

Just some more info to be used by all. P.S. I always have "Cookies" ticked also.

    :) davey

P.S. Looks like you have a definite work-around for now though, until they come up with a fix.

  13. I recently ran some anti-spyware software on one of my systems (AdAware 2008 and Spybot Search & Destroy) and eliminated a host of malevolent software. The system then ran fine; everything seemed peachy keen. Next I ran CCleaner on the same system and followed the recommendations for deleting files and fixing registry entries. Shortly thereafter (it may have been the very next time I rebooted but I'm not certain), I received the following error message as my Windows XP machine was booting up:

"This application has failed to start because OLEAUT32.dll was not found. Re-Installing the application may fix this problem" The blue bar across the top added the following: ?Isass.exe - Unable to Locate Component.?

I was able to click through this error message but then received a series of identical error messages, each time with the blue bar across the top citing a different component - userinit.exe, services.exe, explorer.exe. Eventually I reached the Windows background screen, but my desktop did not initialize.

From this point I tried to run Task Manager, but got a message that OLEPRO32.dll was missing. I was able to click through that error message and get to Task Manager, and ran the command prompt. I determined that both file OLEAUT32.dll and OLEPRO32.dll were not present in the ..\Windows\System32 directory.

I made a copy of both missing *.dll files from another Windows XP computer and installed them on the problem system using DOS copy from the command prompt and rebooted. Everything seemed to be working correctly; there were no error messages and Windows desktop initialized just fine. I was able to run some programs and access the internet and my home network. However, the next time I rebooted the system, I was back where I started from - with the error message that Oleaut32.dll was missing.

Did I do something with CCleaner that could cause this behavior? Or has my machine become infected with a virus or a trojan horse? I can't seem to locate any useful information about this situation. Has anyone seen this problem before or have any idea what?s going on.

    Hi John,

    Welcome to the forums. :P

Sorry it not in better circumstances.

With everything that is going around recently, using the Spyware Hell forum is the best thing for you to do.

Follow all the instructions at this link. You may need to leave your system running until you get this resolved.

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17457

    Good luck,

    :) davey

P.S. Do what you can to prevent the other computers from being infected also.

  14. Every file on my computer shows has TODAY'S date in the Accessed column. I promise you I have not opened but a few of them. If I move a file to another folder it also changes the modified date. You'd think that wouldn't matter much but I keep several similar documents and when I have occasion to move them, I lose track of which version I was last using (date created doesn't help) and finding out is a pain in the, uh, neck.

    Writeaway,

What security programs are you running in the background or at the beginning of the day. Some of these change the date or they used to do that. Actually , I thought most had been changed but you may have an older version or something. Many scanning programs were dong this.

    :) davey

P.S. Do you use Indexing? I am not sure if this changes the date last accessed or not.

    Hello patrox82,

    Welcome to the forums. :D

I am a little confused as to your meaning.

The CCleaner program is available in approx. 35 languages.

Is this what you mean or are you meaning translation of other things. Are you referring to Defraggler and not CCleaner as stated in your post ? Maybe this is what you meant to say. I am not sure.

    :) davey

  16. I greatly value the opinion of you guys, so I would like your comment on the following:

I currently have Iolo System Mechanic 6 and thinking of upgrading to System Mechanic 8, but I am not 100% impressed with these products. I also find, from my experience, that Iolo customer service/support really sucks.

I was wondering if there is anything on the market that does similar tasks to System Mechanic 8 which you would highly recommend.

    Thank you for your time!

    Hi razz,

Believe me, it is good to hear that you trust the opinions of our members.

Honest to God, 1 year ago I didn't even know what the Start menu was or for, other than to "Turn Off Computer". There was no welcome screen and for 3 1/2 years I had the pleasure of seeing the same Dell wallpaper. Since finding CCleaner and then the forums, I have learned a tremendous amount.

I hope the same is in store for you, your friends, and all our new members.

In regards to PC maintenance packages, utility suites or whatever that you might call them, in general they all seem to be a conglomeration of "features" that have been put together to attract "unknowing" new users.

They have their purpose for a short while. I guess that you can tell that I am not very impressed by any of them.

I would recommend that you build your own "tool kit".

Specific programs that are well designed and perform better than any "packaged system tool".

These are very respected programs that are fast, safe and simple to use and require little maintenance.

I am going to start a list that other members can add to as they see fit. These are all "Freeware".

They are also popular enough to assure readily available advice and support.

Well that is a start anyway. As you can tell I am still learning and enjoy the company and advice of the other members.

Take all that money and time that you save and contribute it to support the forums and software developers. These are the ones who deserve it.

Information about these programs can be found by "searching " the forums. Only get software directly from the authors site or official "mirror" sites as listed by the author.

    Best wishes,

    :) davey

P.S. This original list only contains names of products that I use or have used myself besides being highly recommended by other members. This list is limited to maintenance type programs and does not reflect any security related software or other software products.

  17. Not sure if I am posting in the right place but this is not an issue specific to CCleaner.

    Thanks

Also under Options then Advanced there is a setting to only delete windows temp folder files older than 2 days?

As Humpty says untick this option and don't even look in that folder because sometimes just looking updates some date most probably in the Directory and the files stay in there.

Watch your Analysis listing and you should see these files tumble out today, tomorrow, whenever. Just don't go near those folders or Directories or folders and they will tumble out. Member AlanB has also noticed this.

If you then want to keep more junk in there turn the option back on and they will build up again.

Remember don't look or they won't come out.

    Gare Ron Teed !

    :) davey

P.S. Why you wanna be a "shareware guinnea pig" anyway? Well, it's OK by me. You better have good back-ups and such or we are going to "shove" some good, free backup software into your Temp files. Ya heah me ?

As regards those "temp" files and Directories, I think I have tracked it down to some sort of "Quantum Physics" thing. :P

  18. i clicked View Hidden files/folders

it wont show it still, is it like super hidden? lol

Once you click it and the others related hidden system files and untick hide system files etc. then click on Apply on the right at the bottom. Then OK on the left.

This should do the job but some Registries have been changed and we will deal with that later if we must.

    Let us know.

    :) davey

P.S. As Andavari shows in his following post this is where you are looking in Windows Explorer for the Temporary Internet File . Correct ? C:\Documents and Settings\Cody\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\AntiPhishing\B3BB5BBA-E7D5-40AB-A041-A5B1C0B26C8F.dat 77.07KB

Like you listed in post #1 ?

  19. Being new to CCleaner, i am wary of running this application. I used the annalyzed button, and the programs for deleting showed some personal files, eg pictures, music etc. Once i press "run cleaner" a warning box appears saying these files will be perminatly deleted, does this mean my pictures and stuff will be lost?

    Hi Tim,

    Welcome to the forum :D

You bet it means that it will delete what it shows.

I am glad that you pay attention to what is being reported.

These files that you talk about. Can you show us a copy of the listing.

I have a feeling that these files are either in temporary folders and should be moved or are being stored in the wrong folders.

However don't run the Cleaner until we get an idea of what files we are talking about here.

It may be just a misunderstanding but better safe than sorry. As you have proved that you are well aware of.

    Fill us in.

P.S. You can right click on the Analysis listing and save it as a .txt file. You can edit out what is personal or extraneous and show us the rest or cut and paste snippets to give us an idea.

  20. Hi davey,

Oh, it was my mistake yeah I can see the option but it is not cleaning my icon cache at all for some reason.

The attatchment was the result of 'tick' on the option. But the VB script I have works, it closes explorer and

performs cleanup and restarts explorer process again and boom, they are gone.

Do you think there's something wrong with my computer? I also tried restarting the computer but found no luck.

Maybe, adding another option to that 'icon cache' option to close explorer and restart again for immediate result?

    Thanks.

Yes, the turning off and back on of Windows Explorer is required. See Cleaner Information in the Beginners guide.

You may have the same VB script I use also.

    :) davey

P.S. I misunderstood your reason for doing this. A word to the wise. There are more than one way to skin a cat. This also holds true for monitoring PCs. Stick to the rules or you will get caught. :o

  21. No that's a web server response telling people they don't have permission to use their images elsewhere - many consider it stealing their bandwidth, etc., hence such an error page. That's why many times if I post an image from elsewhere, I'll typically download it to my PC then post it on one of the free image hosting services.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Now that you explained it so well. I will file that away in the "old gray cells".

Wonder if it will stay there.

Now to get back to the real "storm tracking" news.

    :) davey

P.S. I have bookmarked it also, Andavari. My "gray cells can't hold all that much".

Thanks Hazel for an important and interesting site.

  22. I have not had any problems up until now updating the latest version of C Cleaner (211.636) When I try and update there are two choices 1) Download From file Hippo.com or 2) Alternative Download.....When I click on the first one i do not see a tab to download, alot of it is advertising and people trying to take your money, I usually have been luck with Alternative Download But this did not work, it would download the new updates but when i restart my computer it is still on the old version can anyone help me with this, i have VISTA on my system if that makes any difference. [

    Hi Linda,

    Welcome to the forums. :D

When you download from Filehippo.com you must select the program from the list on the right side of the panel.

The newest version will be Highlihted or you select a different version and then click at the top of the list Just click on the green download arrow.

Select Save when it asks what you would like to do.

You can then save the download in Temporary Internet files or browse and save it where you would like.

Some users create a Folder called My Downloads in My Documents folder just for this purpose. This way you can Save the CCleaner.zip package and not have to download it again.

You then left click twice on the zipped folder package will displayed in the right hand panel as Icons.

Over in the left panel you must click on Extract files. The extracted files will then be displayed on the right hand panel.

Left click twice on the leftmost Icon and the Install Wizard program will start. Let the Wizard install the CCleaner folder for you. I always ask for new desktop and start menu Icons.

You should now be able to click on the new desktop Icon and get the new version to run.

    If not we are here.

    Good luck,

    :) davey
