  1. I really think CCleaner should be faster for those impatient people, like me, especially when analyzing and it takes a long time to load the Cookies section. There should also be a folder to clean up the Application Data folders.

    Hi xantrac,

Welcome to the forums !!! :D

CCleaner has been updated for many reasons over the years. It provides many features to clean Application Data areas.

Please read the following and do some "searching" on the forums and you will find methods to clean any areas that you desire.

    Article and Screenies

    Thanks Humpty and YoKenny.

This is why I advise friends, family and all to come here and read and only use links provided from this forum.

Google is a great product and necessary but NO ONE should use any search engine links for so-called security software or advice. There are too many "phony providers" and even "phony forums" being set up.

  3. Ok, so this topic is to post your own security tips. I want to listen to everyone's idea. Remember to be respectful to all members, no spaming and flaming. Just post what you think is right and usefull.

I have been using this forum for 1 year now.

My "Common Sense" advice is read all you can on these forums and follow the advice and practices of those that have already "been there and done that".

I have strictly practised this most simple practice. It has served me well.

  4. CCleaner I use in combination with easycleaner. Further programs with similar intentions: RegSeeker, RegSupreme Pro, Registry Mechanic, Advanced SystemCare, RegistryBooster are all in use.

    Too much?

    I have no inconvenecies.

    Hello cohrt,

    Welcome to the forums !!!

You know it is overkill plus impossible to figure out when things go bad.

Maybe if you got rid of a lot of the dangerous Reg stuff and stick with CCleaner.

Now you can concentrate on important stuff like backing up your data etc. and having some fun.

  5. I am receiving an error message "Defraggler was unable to change the options" every time I try to schedule a drive defragmentation. I have tried a couple of drives and different frequencies / times of day.

    Any ideas?

    Hello OzWiz,

Welcome to the forums !!! :D

Did you try closing Defraggler and then try again ?

I have WinXP SP3 32-bit and no problems with it.

    What are your specs ?

  6. Hi there

Thanks for taking the time to read this post!!

    Hello jjscotman,

A few other users are reporting similar non-address cleaning and related to Google(not specifically related to Google Chrome as far as I can get data).

    Your data is needed also.

    1. What OS, version, and edition are you using ?

    2. 32-bit or 64-bit ?

    3. If you are using Vista, did you do a fresh install or did you "upgrade?" from XP ?

    Thanks for your report,

    :) davey

P.S. 4. What version of IE are you using ?

    5. Any other browsers ?

    6. Are these addresses being cleaned if you use IE instead of Google Chrome ?

  7. Davey..

Do you still have any interest in the shots? Otherwise, I'm going to "sit tight" and hope the next version cleans as it has the in the past.

    CJ

No the "shots" are not necessary.

Did you just update or install FF3 ?

    :) davey

P.S. Anyhow, check all your Firefox options related to cleaning or saving areas.

Restore advanced settings in IE7 at Internet Options > Advanced tab.

IF you are using IE7Pro that is good. Make sure that no cleaning options have been set in the Privacy Cleaner.

  8. Hmm, due to your post I just noticed the FUC is listed on the available updates page to the top right.

That's just it. I was so used to seeing the "Pink Flamingo" and just exiting.

Last night I got the "Pink Flamingo" and noticed that a new version of FileHipp, com Update Checker was available. I was not sure how long that notice was being offered but since the "Pink Flamingo" said

    Congratulations!

    Your computer is up-to-date!

I figured I was up to date. I guess the FileHippo people don't want a lot of problems being caused by people updating The Checker program in the middle of using it. Who knows.

Just thought I would give a heads up. I still am not sure how long the update was available.

@ DennisD You are welcome !

  9. so looks like the issue is fixed. any ideas what i did wrong...so it won't happen again would appreciated.

    thanks,

    mell

    Hi magickmell,

Welcome to the forums !!! :D

    Strange indeed !!!

This should not have happened. If this is the first time that you installed CCleaner you definitely should have done a REBOOT before using it. Of course this is the best practice after (un)/installing or updating any software. You may have done so.

Anyhow, things like this also occur if you selected some of the Advanced cleaning options. Many new users are not prepared for the results. The same holds true for using the Registry issues function without understanding what you are doing. I advise all new CCleaner users or "Newbie" PC users to leave the Registry alone until they become much more "experienced".

  10. OK, I have to appologize. Apparently I was running an old version of CCleaner. With the 2.13.720 build the |RECURSE works from within the winapp2.ini.

    Still, a |RECURSE and a |REMOVESELF option for the Options\Include\Add Folder-function would be nice.

    Hi mike42,

This is a personal Warm Welcome to the forums!!! :D

It is very informative for other users and members to know exactly what actually happened.

You were honest and humble enough to report the fact that you were actually using an old version and this is what caused the problem. I respect your being straightforward .

I will look forward to your future posts.

    Thanks again,

    :) davey

  11. I've been using CCleaner daily for at least 3 years. Any and all input would be appreciated..

    TIA..

    CJ

    Hi CJ,

You are not the first to report different figures. There may be a "bug".

Can you give us some snap-shots before and after. Please include the CCleaner banner area in your snap shots so the "Bug fixers" can see it. Also please tell us what edition of your OS and more PC info if possible.

It is good to find someone that has not changed anything including updates to no other software except CCleaner version.

What happens if you Analyze using the current version and then the same using the prior version.

Your report and help is certainly appreciated.

  12. hey all, i'm on a 5 year old HP running XP sp3

any advice on what i can turn off on startup and how to make my comp run better plz???

    Thanks.

    -Andrew.

    Hi Andrew,

Welcome to the forums !!! :D

I am glad that you joined up with us. I hope we can help you.

My PC was in bad shape 1 year ago until I came here also.

Many of those startup items phone home and such so they have to wait to get to the Internet.

Many also do un-necessary things that take too much time. If your security program has options to scan at startup you may also want to turn off those options. It is OK to for them to check critical things but not everything. You can do those manually at better times.

It is also important to have only 1 A/V running "real-time" and 1 firewall. Tell us more about them.

To speed up you security/malware scanning, I highly recommend that you install (MBAM) from Malwarebytes.org . It is very small and quick to update. I do it daily and the quick scan takes only 7 - 9 minutes on my Pentium 4 w/ 256 MB RAM. It has an excellent reputation for finding and removing malware .

The program is free. Get the free version for now.

Just press download and ignore everything but selecting the MBAM download site. Don't mess with any free scans or such offered at the download sites if any. I personally used the Download.com site.http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

EDIT If Malwarebytes finds any (ANY) then you need to follow Andavari's advice "immediately" and use his link to get your PC cleaned from malware.

Tell us some more about your system PC, CPU, hard drives etc.

Andavari's link is excellent to decide what to Disable. Do not delete any Startup entries just Disable those that are not normally needed. You can Disable them using CCleaner Tools > Startup.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

P.S. It may also help to run Windows Disk Defragmenter and Analyze if your PC needs Defragmenting. If it does then run it when you can let it run for a few hours or several if needed. You can safely stop it at any time if necessary. Then run it again later if needed.

  13. Well, I finally completed my project - A-Z Freeware Launcher. Naturally this version is not written in stone and can never be changed, so if anyone who decides to take it for a run have any suggestions for improvement, then please let me know.

I sincerely hope that some of you may find my program useful.

    Hi Razz,

Initial test results on my WinXP Pro SP3 with all .net Framework versions and service packs.

I can not exit any window other than what you call the Main Console without the program staying in memory.

I can only end the process with Task Manager.

Some windows will only show the upper half of the Main Console button. The lower half is covered by the Taskbar. My taskbar is set to always be on top.

Please don't delete too much of your text for the sake of "professional" tidiness.

    Best wishes,

    :) davey

  14. davy, this is something that annoys me as well and can only be displayed when you begin to type something into the Address field in IE and all previous typed entries appear as an aid to help you in selecting old entries.

I just ignore the advice and just keep typing the URL I want.

    I know what you mean.

I am sure to hear much moaning and groaning when the other guys type in prunes.com and it doesn't automatically suggest some URLs.

I am testing these Google options such as "store search history on my computer" and "Browse by name in the address bar" if they don't hang me first. :P

These other users have to worry about snoopy neighbors and grand-children and such. I understand their concern.

    :) davey

  15. I have deleted my Google toolbar but the addresses still show up if I turn Autocomplete back on. Maybe CCleaner didn't work because I'm not using the right version of IE. How do I tell which version I'm using?

    Hello again tnfarmer,

I see you have had good help.

At least you told us that you are using the Google toolbar.

Hopefully no others have been involved. We shall see.

I took so long since I had a lot of reading and testing to do and I had to use different PCs during this time.

Many different methods have been used over the years to store URL history by many browsers and also by many "Toolbars". Now as then there are some conflicts that occur.

After testing on at least 2 PCs to a successful conclusion, I advise that you do the following.

Be aware that you will lose all previous searched URLs. You will not affect your "Favorites".

    1. Uninstall the Google toolbar again.

    2. Using the IE "Tools" select Delete Browsing History and then select "delete history" then select Close.

    3. Run CCleaner and select Cleaner > Internet Explorer > History and also Delete Index.dat files .

    4. Reboot

    5. Start Internet Explorer and you should find that you no longer find those entries when you type in the IE address bar.

If you do then there must be other things involved than just the Google toolbar.

    6. If all is well reinstall the Google toolbar and unselect any items that Google wants if you do not want it like storing History on your PC or reporting stats to Google. That is up to you.

Hope this works for you. I can't test the Yahoo toolbar for you.

    :) davey

  16. Hello,

If someone could explain it in SIMPLE terms, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Hello grcguy,

    Welcome to the forums!!! :D

Glad to have members who are curious and also willing to join in.

Most of what we can tell you is based on personal experience or reading the forums.

Most of your answers on the forums are from members and not the actual developers(programmers).

From my experience, this happens quite frequently due to the fact that the Analysis finds things that are "targets" for cleaning. When the actual cleaning is done some "targets" are not available for cleaning because those areas are either being used by other programs or are being protected by the OS system or security software.

CCleaner always does a more thorough job if all other programs are not running at the time. This does not include turning off firewall or security programs. It is possible to run other programs at the same time but it does cause "strange" things to appear such as what you describe. I have seen that most users who close all other programs especially browsers get better cleaning results and they experience fewer problems.

Then there is always the possibility of a few "bugs" but these are not normal.

    :) davey

  17. Am I the OD-one out?

I got Windows XP SP3 via Windows (Automatic Updates) :D

A few months back, Windows informed me that "Updates" were ready to be installed... the rest is history.

I've had no problems so far

    Hi Craig,

Add one more odd-ball to the list. That is how I updated but it was back in May 2008. My download was only around 60-70 MB. No problems installing SP3.

What these guys are discussing will help speed-up the Windows re-install process for those with slow or no Internet connection in the future. This will also help Keith download at work and update at home.

I am not sure if I am part of the "Bargain Basement" club or not.

    :) davey

  18. We recently downloaded CCleaner in the hopes that it would eliminate those addresses, but it hasn't. Any suggestions?

    Tnfarmer

P.S. The items are not in our "favorites' (as far as we know).

    Hi tnfarmer,

    Welcome the forums!!!

We are glad to help you.

    Quite a predicament.

I am no track covering Expert but a little more information may be helpful.

What Internet browsers are you using ? IE7? Firefox?

What tool bars are you using ? Google? Yahoo?

Do these tools or gadgets plug in suggested addresses ?

    Do you use Bookmarks ?

I will look into this subject further. Other helpers will probably advise you also.

    Best wishes,

    :) davey

  19. Cleaner runs slowly on one computer, taking about 1-2 seconds to clean each file entry. The hard drive is working as you can hear it. On all my other machines, to clean about 60 mB takes 10-15 seconds, yet on thei Compaq running XP Pro SP3, and 1 MB ram, the process takes 4-6 minutes. What's the problem? Should I uninstall, clean the reg, and download a fresh installation? THANKS!

    Hello Steven,

    Welcome to the forums!!! :D

    This happens to some users.

Hazel's solution may be the cure in this situation.

If that doesn't work, think about and try some of the following.

Just take the time to do some Hard Drive tests.

Also be sure that someone hasn't forgotten to turn off the "secure delete" option at Cleaner > Options > Settings .

Maybe a Disk Defrag run may help also.

Also do all these PCs use the same security programs?

Are the browsers actually closed while running CCleaner, especially Firefox?

Any other programs running can slow down CCleaner. Use Task Manager to see what else is running at the time.

    Best wishes,

    :) davey

  20. Hi, I wonder how fast my computer can be after a full cleanning with CCleaner.

    Paul Weinstock

    Hi Paul,

A heartfelt welcome from me also. :D

Like the others have said it is all relative.

After using CCleaner for the first time, this PC ran much quicker.

However I came here with a PC that had no maintenance or updates for 3 1/2 years since it was first used.

The real benefits come from taking some more time to read and learn about your PC and Windows. I have read the forums, learned and applied many beneficial things. My PC is now 4 1/2 yrs old and runs quicker and is more secure and useful than ever.

    Good luck,

    :) davey
