It could be a critical issue for you. Do you have a copy of your (cc)leaner.ini file? Put a copy of your backup copy into the CCleaner folder.
You may have lost the original or somewhere along the line that option was turned off or somehow the entry for your Backup directory has been deleted from your Registry. If you uninstalled CCleaner then you may have lost all your previous settings, cookies to save, etc. If you have typed it in recently it should reset. Try it some more and let us know.
I recommend that you turn on that option at Options > Advanced > Save settings to INI file and make a copy of that file after you get all your settings reset, cookies to save, etc.. Save your backup copy in another folder not in your CCleaner folder.

Does this "disk-space-munching" only happen on Vista - or has anyone seen this happen on XP?

This "disk-space-munching" only happens on Vista. It is not really "lost" space as some users think.
It is Vista using the space. It is also Vista returning the space. There is no magic happening by using Defraggler.
It is not the cause of the "loss" or the "return" of this space. Many users have done many things in order to recover this space. It is coincidental that the space is returned in almost all these cases. The user could continue the Defraggler run and the drive will be defragged. Some users have stopped the Defraggler run because they were watching the "Used space" and "Free space" fields and they mistakenly thought that Defraggler was "taking" the space.
I do not know of any such thing happening in WinXP.

I am not a Firefox user but I do know that sometimes Firefox takes some time to completely close down.
Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to show the Task Manager and look in the Process list for firefox.exe and give it some more time to close. If it doesn't also see this related thread.

No, i have no startup folder(s), i don't need any progs to start when windows does (except my AV, of course, but that starts up as a service,) so i deleted them.

That is unusual that you removed the Startup folder. This may be the cause of your interesting Startup list.
It looks like every program that is actually loaded by the OS at startup.
Maybe if you at least put a Startup folder back then this strange list will disappear. CCleaner will find an empty folder.

You can recover all your CCleaner settings from The CCleaner folder.
In WinXP this is C:\Program Files\CCleaner. The text file named (cc)leaner.ini contains all your settings.
This file is only created if you had the option at Options > Advanced > Save all settings to INI file.
If you did not have this option set, then all your settings can be found in a copy of your Registry.
How to recover them? I am not sure.
I always recommend that the option to save the settings to INI file be set on. You can make a copy in case the original gets deleted. Plus it is easy to read since it is a text file. Flip the option off and back on and a new sorted version is created. Makes it easy to find things.

i have the reverse issue........2.14 deletes all the cookies.....2.13 did not have this bug .....so i went back.....re-insyalled 2.13......every thing's fine.....browser's ok.....been through all the tests first....ffox 2.0.0.018.....os=w982(don't ask) i guarantee you my 982 is the fastest in the country....and never crashes.......i'll be abanding it soon.....i have 2 systems under construction.....intel2 quad4 and an AMD Athalon....touch screen fpanel's w/ voice over....i'm disabled army veteran......missing parts....ergo the pencil tests...

Going back to the prior version of CCleaner seems to be the solution for Firefox 2.0.0.018 users until the problem is corrected.

When I run the cleaner, version 2.14.750, I get a long list of files to clean yet I have not ticked off any of the options of the windows tab. Is this a bug?

That is a new question. It is only a "bug" if you also have everything turned off on the Applications tab, I would think. I never even tried that before.

I'm using Windows XP home edition o.o basically the regular one..
Are you running a scan ?
I can recommend one if you don't have one.
daveyP.S. The program is free. Get the free version for now.
Just press download and ignore everything but selecting the MBAM download site. Don't mess with any free scans or such offered at the download sites if any. I personally used the Download.com site. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Once installed select Update tab and update the program.
Then select the Scan tab and do a quick scan. It only takes 10 mins to do a quick scan.

PS: I might be the malware because I'm pretty sure the CCleaner cleared my cache etc..
Hmm, this may not be malware at all but I would run a scan just the same.
I don't want to tell you to reboot until you run a scan. If nothing shows up then I would reboot and try CCleaner with its normal name restored to CCleaner.exe . I am presuming now that this is the first time that you have used CCleaner version 2.
What OS, version and edition are you using ?

Since upgrading to v2.14.750 the Firefox cookie file (cookies.txt) is being deleted, rather than just purging cookies that are not in my "cookies to keep" list. If I uncheck the cookies box in the Firefox application tab it does not delete the file, but then it also does not purge unwanted cookies.

The "bug fixers" will need it. You will probably have to revert back to the prior CCleaner version until the problem is fixed.

OK, then that means that you may be infected.
Run your security scans and see what happens. The security logs can be used when reporting your problem.
daveyP.S. If you find anything then you must use this link to "clean" any malware from your PC.
Do not run CCleaner after the scan because it may clean out your security scan logs. CCleaner is not a malware cleaning program. You will need Expert help from this link. I would not send any E-mails, etc until this is resolved. I understand that this makes you feel nervous and upset. You have every right to feel this way.

This is reported very infrequently. If you are knowledgeable enough then rename the CCleaner.exe program and try to run it. If that works then you may be infected with malware that prevents CCleaner from running.
Run some security scans. I normally advise users to reboot but in your case it may advisable to keep your PC up and running as it is until we are sure that the PC is not infected with malware.

With CCleaner the best assets seem to be how safe it is when it comes to the registry and how fast it works . Unlike many other utilities you do not have to sit forever and wait for it to scan your system ,its fast as can be !

I apologize that I overlooked your question regarding the CCleaner .reg backups.
This is an important subject. You say that you do not use all your software immediately after doing Registry issues fixing. If something shows on the Registry scan I would be suspicious about anything that shows up that I did not recently do some sort of maintenace. Anyhow these files are normally small and I would wait at least 2 cycles of use. I normally save them a lot longer than that. I haven't used the Registry issues fixing in quite awhile anyway. Since I cleaned up my PC after 3 1/2 years of use with no maintenance.
I don't do much software installing,testing, and uninstalling like many of the other members do. There is nothing wrong with them doing so since they test things out and provide valuable information related to such products. They are also very knowledgable about how to get themselves out of trouble. "Most users" are not and I advise them to leave the Registry alone. "Most users" will never see any performance improvements by removing things from the Registry. Messing with the Registry is only advised to fix specific problems.
I would not even bother with anything other than CCleaner when it comes to registry issues removal but I probably won't use it for a long while now.

Recuva didn't find it for recovery. Iwas using an older version of Recuva and stitched to the latest. No Change.
Is there something about the desktop which makes recovery impossible?

Hi swamiji,
Your best chance of "recovery" has nothing to do with where the file was displayed or stored unless it is stored on other than the C drive.The best chance of recovery on the C drive is an old file. The newer the file the more likely it will be reused very soon.
Installing a new copy of Recuva on the same partition can in itself possibly overwrite what you are trying to recover. If you do find the deleted file, then you want to "Recuva" it to another partition.

Yes, the System Restore has the Registry and hopefully the other files necessary to restore you back to that time. However , you must keep in mind that any Registry changes since then will disappear. If you don't change things very often then you should be OK.

I checked the "secure delete" option. Doing so, I assumed that all files I have in the recycle bin are securely erased by CCleaner, when run.
Instead, after CCleaner completes execution, I see the bin emptied, but if I use Recuva I can recover most files, which have been NOT securely erased.
Then what?
I dont understand what is wrong. Either Recuva is too powerful, either CCleaner is not doing what promised.
Anybody can help me to understand?
For developers, is it possible to add a real "secure delete" feature in CCleaner?

The other guys have given you some good tips but the most important question I think is "Did you find the recoverable file with the name that you were aware of when you think you put it in the Recycle Bin?".
It may be just as the others have suggested.
If you found the same named file using Recuva then it definitely was not in the Recycle Bin.

daveyP.S. Like the others, I do not use CCleaner to Empty my Recycle Bin. I treat the Recycle Bin just like my office trash can. Nobody empties it except ME. That is why it is called "File 13". Many members have a special Shredder folder that they drag and drop files to be "secure deleted". They have an INCLUDE entry for that folder at Options > Include . Everything contained in that folder gets "secure deleted" if "secure delete" option is set . Also, 1 overwrite is sufficient. CCleaner overwrites with zeros and the file name is changed to a bunch of ZZZZs.
