I don't recognise the icon nor the drop down menu - I can only assume you have the yahoo toolbar or something similar installed. It's the sort of "addon" I avoid like the plague. I keep my email client exclusively for my ISP email address (and aliases) - for my yahoo addresses I log on via the web - the two shall never meet... To that extent my interest in this thread is limited, but my growing dislike of everything google prompted me to speak up. Sorry if I mislead you.

I know of one program that is specifically designed to remove outlook express - it cost about ?2.50.. It can be done manually, but the process of renaming Dlls and folders (about 12 in total) never really worked for me. The main advantage of the program for me is that windows update ceased to offer you updates on a program you had uninstalled. I still have the program but not the link to the website - when I track it down I'll let you know.

What is wrong with yahoo? I login via this address - https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us - and go straight to my inbox Mind you I have never had or signed up for any of thier chat or messenger programs. On a side note as far as privacy goes, I would rather trust yahoo over Google inc and their suite of info gathering software and services. I really don't see what the attraction of Google is. Maybe I'm getting old.

Installed, ran scan, came back here, read the replies and uninstalled I found nothing wrong, except cyberhawk was continually trying to call home after I blocked internet access. Doesn't it strike you as strange when we seem to be continually questioning the companies we used to trust in the security business... Are we just too paranoid, or maybe just ignorant? Prehaps the software companies should explain their products in a bit more detail.

Thanks for the thumbs down Wasn't there a similar discussion relating to the new AVG anti spyware program? What benefit does a program like adaware get from preloading itself at startup? I won't be installing it.

I can't remember the number of times I've heard folk regreting having deleted an old setup file of thier favourite program - especially if its no longer easily available. Here is a site that might help. It contains 1910 versions of 152 programs! http://www.oldversion.com/ Might come in useful.

I was wondering how much memory people expect a browser to use? Is 40mb particularly bad? and can it be compared fairly with other browsers which don't have all the various extensions and addons? If a high memory usage doesn't adversly effect the way I surf or use my PC, then I'm really not bothered. Checking memory usage constantly is like looking for a problem that doesn't really exsist. Lastly every system is different. 40mb might be a lot to some and peanuts to another. It makes comparisons worthless.

I found this extension, which allows you to create you own custom buttons. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2707 However, unless your good at script/code writeing I would give it a miss. There is a forum dedicated to this extension, from which I managed to alter a previously made script to open Faststone, but it also came with extra code and drop down menus for other external apps, which I couldn't sucessfully get rid off - I wanted one button for the Fastone utility. I wouldn't imagine I am allowed to post the forum link here (although I see no conflict). It is full of useful info, but I found is very lacking on info regarding basic coding skills - it really isn't my forte. However if anyone with a more technical background than me would like to give the coding a go I will post the link with the mods consent- I've given up - It drove me crazy for hours! I eventually put a link in my quicklaunch toolbar..

Thanks for the feedback. How would the DRM be updated? Would that be through GOM player of some thirdparty application? I have always blocked GOM player from accessing the web anyway, although I admit the sentence doesn't sound good. Infact I always block all media players from accessing the web A couple of points regarding rridgely's comments. Firstly, Gom player does play QT/Mov files if you install the QT alternative. Secondly MPC isn't fully compatible with vista, I kept getting "screen resolution" error messages. The screen/movie display quality seemed to be worse as a result. I also never remember MPC ever being able to play QT/MOV files, I always used to use the VLC player to play that format. If there are any Vista users who can reccomend a suitable player, I quite willing to give other players a try...

They also have links (in English!) to version 5.3 of the capture software and the image viewer. The german site did link to version 5.3 Does anyone know of a Firefox extension so I can get an icon on my toolbar for the capture program?

On that point it pays to remember to ALWAYS create a restore point BEFORE installing any new software - a feature I've noticed that happens automatically with some software Unfortunately its a steep learning curve when it comes to buying software, as I have found out to my cost, both in monetary terms and in the time and effort involved in restoring your HD and trying to recover lost data. For the record, the best piece of commercial software I have bought is Diskeeper - it does an amazing job keeping my disk defragmented. The best freeware is a tough choice. If it was security related its probably AVG, but for entertainment the GOM movie player is THE best multimedia player I have come across - combined with the real alternative and the QT alternative, it will play every movie type I have heard of, together with a range of options and settings that puts most commercial players to shame. I'm beginning to sound like an advertisement so I won't post the link, but a quick Google search will give you the home page.

Not quite sure what you mean by the "right one". Even on a broadband connection my ISP changes my IP address every few months for reasons best known to themselves. If your ISP decide to reroute you through one of thier proxy servers that can also confuse websites like Gibsons. I used to get messages saying I had two IP addresses... There is no "right one".

Subscription??? I still use the original list that someone posted on the mozilla forums way back in the days of Firefox version 0.93. It still blocks 99% of all the ads I come accross, and the remaining few I kill with a simple right click... Never really found the need to update to anything "better".

Very true. Practically the forst thing I do with a new PC is uninstall the stuff I don't want or will never use. If MS didn't tie in some of their programs so tightly with the OS, I would uninstall them as well.

However you can increase the text size within the toolbar, which accomplishes something similar...I think Here is a before and after screenshot, one with the default text size and the other with the text size increased 200%. Below them is the code you put in your userchrome.css file. (ask if you need help with this) You can change the percentage increase/decrease accordingly: Before: After: and the code: /* Shrink/increase tab titles by set % */.tabbrowser-tabs .tab-text { font-size: 200%;} Not exactly what your looking for I know, but it might be of help.

I thought this might be a useful addition to the Firefox extension post. The web is full of these, but I think it is only fair to post the ones I use and know that they work. userchrome.css and user.js - These files can be created by the Firefox user which are used to customise the browser settings. Some are the basis of extensions which accomplish the same task in a more userfriendly way. As far as I know, no extensions will accomplish what can be achieved with the tweaks below. I would recommend folk to use the "open profile folder" extension I posted a link to - it makes life very easy, and eliminates simple errors. userchrome.css What this does: First: There is (imo) an annoying link at the end of every bookmark list saying "open in tabs". Thats fine if you only have two bookmarks, but press it by mistake on a menu that has 50+ bookmarks and your going to waste a lot of time trying to close tabs! This removes the "open in tabs" option second: Ever wondered why you have a bookmarks toolbar folder with links on it and the same links duplicated in a folder on the bookmarks menu? This gets rid of folder in the bookmarks - not the toolbar itself! Copy the text below into notepad and Save as userchrome.css in the chrome directory of your profile folder. Make sure you save as "all files" not .txt. It won't work otherwise. /* Hide last item "Open in Tabs" in bookmarks menu */.openintabs-menuseparator,.openintabs-menuitem { display: none !important;}/* Remove Bookmark Toolbar folder from the bookmarks menu */ menu[label=Bookmarks Toolbar Folder] { display: none !important; } user.js Only one in this catagory. Are you sick and tired of firefox asking you if you want to download additional plugins to view a webpage? I was, considering I didn't think most plugins are either safe or worth the effort...rant, rant, rant Create a user.js file (the same way you created a userchrome file) in the profile folder and save the following in the file user_pref("plugin.default_plugin_disabled", false); Lastly if you don't like the changes - delete the file you created - simple, you are back to where you started.
