  1. Thanks for the info Hazelnut. For the less technical amongst us, I use the free version of "Vista firewall control" which works along side the Vista firewall. It prompts and then allows you to easily block programs from accessing the web. http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/
  2. Windows Vista creates one restore point a day, or occsionally more if you install new programs. It doesn't stop the defrag process, although it may increase the time it takes. Even so it never takes more than 4 hours on my PC. I sometimes turn off system restore and delete the restore points and then do a defrag. Just don't forget to turn it back on afterwards. To turn it off, go to the control panel -> system -> and then under the "Tasks" on the left hand side click on "system protection". The dialog box that follows has a tick box option where you can specify which drive you want to create restore points for, or not as the case may be. Then reboot and defrag.
  3. I have just been through the same process. Go here and follow the instructions. By the time you finish you'll be able to delete the folder in the programs file safely. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 To remove the right click "new" word/excel document go here. Just take a close look at the file extention the new document has - its not always what you expect. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=112514
  4. You could always try this firefox extension: http://stardrifter.org/refcontrol/ I have been using it for a year or so now, and it works well..and it's a lot easier to use than the instruction link above .
  5. Spyware blaster is the program, and I've had the same problem. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. I presumed it was a Vista problem. I've uninstalled and will try the program again after the next update.
  6. Yes I agree, but at least it works with Vista, which is more than any other free real-time anti spyware protection available (please correct me if I'm wrong). It bearly takes up any memory or space. Maybe if you want to buy a package antivius/firewall/spyware, but otherwise I'm happy to have it running along side spywareblaster and spybot search and destroy.
  7. I'm glad you like Vista, and I'm glad you've said so. I get the feeling most people who dislike Vista have never tried it. The User acount control is easily turned off via the security centre. Accessable via the control panel or from the security icon in the notification area. It drove me crazy for a while, but taking into account all my other security measures, and my surfing habits, I took the discision to turn it off. That was over a year ago. I'm still malware/virus free.
  8. Secure or not, I love it! Thankyou.
  9. I got a digital camera for Christmas, and I have been trying it out over the last few weeks. Here is one of my better shots (or prehaps my best so far...). A scene from The Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland. I managed to get out on one of the few days it wasn't raining/snowing last month (January). It may not look it, but it was cold .

    Spybot update

Thanks for the heads up. I had just finished upgrading to the 1.5.1 two days ago, and thought it was my system that was causing the slow startup. No problems with the new version. I did a clean uninstall with the reg file. Its now faster to install, to start and to scan. A major improvement. Cheers
  11. Thanks Humpty I'm not having one of my brighter moments...
  12. Hi Thanks for the link. I downloaded it to give it a try. When the program alerts you to a new mail, how do you go about deleteing it via palmail? I clicked on the "mark for deleteing/unmark" and nothing happened. I was still able to download it via my email client.. Have I missed something obvious or am I expecting to much of this program?

    Load time

Hi I presume you mean decrease the load times I find if you disable the avatars and signatures on the board, that tends to decease the load time. Go to "My Controls" and the options are under Options -> board settings.
  14. I use Adaware professional 1.06 r1. I have just downloaded update "SE1R213" Dated 14.01.08 Maybe its different with the pro version?
  15. Just a quick point. They weren't sure wether bitlocker came with all versions of Vista. It doesn't. To quote from their help section: It should also say it is available on the business version... Which effectively means its not available on any other version ie. home basic or home premium. You can get the comparisons here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ons/choose.mspx
  16. It sounds good, but both links to the software are dead. Thanks anyway.
  17. If you use firefox they have a IRC client/extension called Chatzilla. I tried it a few years ago and it works well. Its only 311Kb and can be opened either by itself (ie. in a new window) or as a tab. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16
  18. Here's mine for January. Its Richard Proenneke's cabin in Alaska. (board censors don't allow the more usual abbreviated form of his first name) An amazing and very talented guy. I would recommend the book and the films he shot himself.
  19. Hmmmm? You can't afford the program, so your trying to download a "free" version via a torrent? Have I misunderstood?

    DVD Ripper

I use AutoGK. Its a very basic point and click dvd ripper. Its also free and has a good help file. http://www.autogk.me.uk/ It can rip and convert directly from the dvd. Tell it what .ifo file you want to rip, and it will then find all the associated VOB files. Specify the output directory (where you want the avi file to be created) Select what size you want the file to be (I always choose 700mb) Click "Add job" and then "start". Roughly 2.5 to 3 hours later you have your file.
  21. Sorry for dragging this post up from the dead, but rridgely was proved right yet again. My browser was launched and dircted to the AVG site while conducting an update. As long as its only infrequently and irregular, I can almost live with it. Any more than that, and I wouldn't even use their freeware let alone buy the pro version.
  22. Interesting in places, but much of it was complete Gobble-d-gook to me
  23. Very nice, Thankyou. It works with Vista perfectly.
  24. I'm no expert on the pros and cons of speakers, but I recently purchased the Logitech S220 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System: $21.99 I was very surprised at how good they sound given the price and the size of the system. I'm more than happy to listen to CD's through them. Here is a link to an American store that sells them, but I would imagine there must be plenty others. http://tinyurl.com/yrkt35
  25. Very interesting. Thanks. Here is the the link to the sunbelt blog the article mentions, with screen shoots of what to expect. Funny how they use IE for some screenshots and Firefox for others. Maybe they're just making a point. http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/br...of-malware.html
