Publisher
I am using CCleaner, Version 6.0 9.10300. When I open Tools>Start Up>Scheduled Tasks, I see the following: Key = Task Program = ScheduledDefrag Publisher = Microsoft Corp. File = %windir%\system32\defrag.exe -c Key = Task Program = ManualDefrag Publisher = Microsoft Corp. ALL of the other tasks published by Microsoft show Publisher = Microsoft Corporation. Using Resource Hacker on defrag.exe shows the Company Name as Microsoft Corporation. Task Scheduler shows the Author of both of the above tasks as Microsoft Corporation. I have NO Registry keys showing Microsoft Corp. Where is CCleaner picking up the name of Microsoft Corp. for these tasks? Thank You.
Moderators nukecad Posted April 3, 2023 Moderators Share Posted April 3, 2023 "Corp." is simply an abbrivation of "Corporation". It doesn't make any difference to anything which one has been used, they both mean the same thing. Microsoft will use either one, or sometimes both, when signing their software. You'd have to ask MS why they use each one in different places. But there is probably no particular reason why other than which developer is typing it in at the time, or possibly how much space they have to display it in a particular message box? It's quite common for programmers/developers to shorten longer words so that they will fit more neatly in a message box. *** Out of Beer Error ->->-> Recovering Memory *** Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Publisher
nukecad, Thanks for your response. I understand how the programming works. However, you did not answer my question. I will restate: WHERE is CCleaner picking up the name of Microsoft Corp. for these tasks? hazelnut, Thanks for your response. Here's what my defrag.exec shows:

Sorry, I haven't got a clue. It could be anywhere from a field internal to the .exe's code, or from the Windows registry, or from ....... You'd need to look at the CCleaner source code to be sure where it's looking, but of course that's commercial software and not going to be published. Is there a particular reason why you seem to be so bothered by how MS have written their name differently in different places? *** Out of Beer Error ->->-> Recovering Memory *** Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Unfortunately Microsoft can and does use each of the things mentioned (Microsoft Corp. or Corporation) It means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Do not worry too much about it Support contact https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general or support@ccleaner.com
Publisher
Still the question remains: Where is the secret hiding place that CCleaner is getting this info from.......
Publisher
Copied defrag.exe from system32 to systemroot, changed 2 defrag tasks accordingly, and now the full MS name is shown. I don't get it....
Moderators Andavari Posted April 5, 2023 Moderators Share Posted April 5, 2023 That doesn't make sense. Wonder if they're pulling it from some installed certificate(s) or the web somehow.
