  1. PCLinuxOS and Mepis are two Distros' that I know of that do an auto detect. I just added my printer and it was that easy, "Add Printer." Done. I am at work right now but when I get home I will post a link for "Linux Incompatibility List."
  2. "costs that go along with being an MS'er" Have you tried Linux yet? Vista vs. Mepis "With both systems completely idle except for their memory map programs and the screenshot program, MEPIS has a memory footprint of less than 100MB, while Vista is pounding down its foot with over half-a-gigabyte of RAM." The story is not finished yet, but here is what is done. http://desktoplinux.com/articles/AT9727687530.html
  3. I can't take credit for that and I don't know who to credit it to or I would. It was sent to me by someone who got it from someone...
  4. "The no bike helmets brings back my earliest days of head banging, well before I was into Metal music." ROFLMAO
  5. TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
  6. I was comparing to the case with the teacher using this analogy. The School board/Principal or whoever is not the one in trouble, it is the baby-sitter.
  7. Story here. http://p2pnet.net/story/11515 "February 28, 2007 Re: Notification of Copyright Infringement Claims CASE ID# Dear Sir/Madam: We have asked your Internet Service Provider to forward this letter to you in advance of our filing a lawsuit against you in federal court for copyright infringement. We represent a number of large record companies, including EMI Recorded Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, as well as all of their subsidiaries and affiliates ('Record Companies'), in pursuing claims of copyright
  8. "Who should your computer take its orders from? Most people think their computers should obey them, not obey someone else. With a plan they call "trusted computing", large media corporations (including the movie companies and record companies), together with computer companies such as Microsoft and Intel, are planning to make your computer obey them instead of you. (Microsoft's version of this scheme is called "Palladium".) Proprietary programs have included malicious features before, but this plan would make it universal." 9. Wait till you try Vista, over half a GB when idle.
  10. Did MS have him thrown in jail for 2 years? For pointing out all the c__p that is unnecessarily running.
  11. Can you imagine, doing someone a favor by babysitting their 12 year old, who was allowed to have a friend over, hearing a shot, finding one of the children dead from a gunshot wound, then being charged with endangering childrens' lives? Meanwhile, it's not your house, you had no idea there was a gun there at all nor whether it was stored properly or not. Only in America. I hope.
  12. One more. If you want to see any of the menus, peripherals for example, let me know.
  13. Hasn't crashed on me since the update. Before that I was over to IE7 as it was working better than FF.
  14. Attempting connection to your computer. . . Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet! Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist! One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior req

    Setting up DSL?

I'd say that is pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen the actual as there is going to be a little bit of a loss somewhere. Not even my providers test has given me the actual.
  16. Thats one of the benefits of Linux. Adding new life to older set-ups. No need for anti-anything. Here is another new one to try on the new comp after deciding you like it on the old comp after 2 hours. lol Ubuntu ultimate edition 1.2 is available for download. http://ubuntusoftware.info/ultimate/index.html It contains all of the following software pre-installed: * New theme / splash screen / wallpaper * VCD Gear debian style * Subversion & build tools * Wireless Internet integration * Bluetooth integration * PPP integration * Networking tools * 35 Additional fonts
  17. OK, so I got a little edgy (eft) this morning and installed Ubuntu. PITA. Wouldn't work no matter what I did. So I opened up PCLinuxOS, located the formatting tools, formatted a partition to Journalized FS (EXT 3), tried again. No problem. Exact same settings. Just seems to want to be formatted first. For anyone interested, Edgy Eft comes stock with more programs installed than PCLinuxOS, although both can add oodles more. Free. I recommend trying either. I don't know what comes on the g-parted liveCD, but you may want to get it first, if installing Ubuntu, partition and format, i

    Setting up DSL?

No problem. Sometimes can be useful to see if comp. is working right. Just have to keep in mind time of day, weather etc... These things will affect speed. Using to compare, do so at same time of day you used before. Speedtest.net also stores previous tests although I don't know how many or for how long. Using a different connection point on their site makes a difference as well. If I use Toronto, Ontario, Canada(one hundred miles from here) I get just under 10Mb/s, if I choose one way down south, usually drops to about 2Mb/s.
  19. Nice link .93-Big Daddy .94-PCLinuxOS They have better laptop support now. I have seen mention of IBM and Sony in my menus, not sure about Toshiba. Ubuntu, Simply Mepis, PCLinuxOS are supposed to be the best for new users of Linux. One more I think but can't recall the name of though. I like PCLinuxOS because of my lack of computer experience. I have not had to use a command prompt yet. Comparable to a bundled computer I guess except it is easier to get rid of the unwanted apps. But basically it is ready to go. Configures internet connection automatically. Comes pre-installed with M
  20. Should be some in the Wiki link. Nothing fancy about mine, I haven't changed it yet. If you were to boot off of the LiveCD, you'd be lookin at my desktop.

    Setting up DSL?

You need to pick a site close to you, usually recommends one with a different color.
  22. Try PCLinuxOS. Formatted-swap file created-installed-dual boot system- surfing with FF less than 15 min. And I am new to computers. I already had a partition ready to go except the formatting. Should something go wrong, full re-install<10 min. http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?7 http://www.pclinuxonline.com/wiki/HomePage Works off of the LiveCD too. Say hello to the 21st Century.
