  1. Your first issue is that Edge Chromium is being skipped because it is running in the background, see this for how to stop that:
(or you could just untick all the entries for Edge Chromium and CCleaner won't even look at it)

Second - Many things on your computer use Edge Chromium (and Internet Explorers) storage spaces, so those spaces may need to be cleaned.
(Live tiles, weather, news, etc. plus even 3rd party apps will use their tempory folders because they are there and handy)

Have a read of this, especially the 3rd section "Cookies (Tracking Cookies) and other files that can reappear straight after cleaning" for an idea of where they can come from:

  2. Like I said in my post above we all have moments of inattention, at least you found it.

PS. Superantispyware has a different purpose than CCleaner so they will  each look for different things, although some will be the same.

PPS. It's by no means the first time I've fixed/changed a tap, this one has been give a dose of WD40 before I put the handle back on.
WD40 is not really recommended on a tap because if you don't clean it off afterwards it can degrade rubber seals over time, but as I'm going to be taking the ceramic cartridge apart (once I've got it out) to replace all the O-rings anyway that doesn't matter.

  3. Uninstalling CCleaner is not going to change you permissions for Excel in any way at all.

If the problem is persisting after you have uninstalled/reinstalled Office then it's something other than CCleaner causing it anyway.

Did you do the 7 steps that I gave you above?

    If you have then:
Do the 7 steps above again only this time under 'Settings' tick the 'Run this program as an Administrator' and then 'Apply'.

What we are trying to do here is toggle the setting off and on again (with a restart after each change) to try and 'give it a shake'.

... , upon turning on my monitor again .....

Recuva needs to be able to see the drive the whole time that it is working.

If your computer goes to sleep and/or the drive powers down then it can't see the drive anymore and so has to stop.
Which means that you have to start all over again.
(Recuva may contine it's scan after the computer/drive wakes up, but you won't be able to do anything with the results, because the contents of the drive may have changed).

Try setting your computer to never sleep before running Recuva, see this post:

  5. If the apps will run as administrator then I don't beilive that you need to reinstall them.

They are obviously still there if they will run as admin, so it's a permissions issue if they won't run as a standard user.

Reinstalling should reset the permissions, but there may be an easier way(s).

Try this first; (do it from an Admin account).

    1. Go back into Program Files and right click on Excel.exe
    2. Select 'Properties' and go to the 'Compatibility' tab.
    3. Click 'Change settings for all users'.
    4. Under 'Settings' see if 'Run this program as an Administrator' is ticked, if so then untick it and 'Apply'.
    5. 'OK' your way out of the Properties windows.
    6. Restart your machine, use Restart not Shutdown. (a restart may not be needed but best to do it anyway).).
    7. Try opening Excel again as a standard user user.

  6. I'm afraid there is no solution.
Windows must be able to see a drive for any recovery tool to work on that drive.
And as you have found modern Android phones can not be seen as a drive.

  7. OK, so your is a different issue.

If you are clicking an excel file to open it and it isn't opening then it may simply be the file association that has somehow been lost.
That's easy to put back, but to find out if that is the problem then try this first:

What happens if you go to the file location (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\...etc) in File Explorer and double click excel.exe?
    Does excel open?

for the exclusion part: i don't have such file in c:\windows\temp

But you are using Avari Free Security? (if so you may find that other programmes have also been affected).

Do you have "Hidden Items" turned on in File Explorer'sView menu?

Note that this Avira problem is not just seen with CCleaner, it has also been reported as happening with other cleaning tools, and on Avira's own forum.

If any cleaning removes that Avira temporary folder (which should only contain temporary files) then Avira will 'wipe' programme executables.
The excecutable file(s) is still there but it is empty.
(It seems to be programmes that have been run since you installed, or maybe since you last updated, Avira that are affected but that is not yet confirmed).

As Redwolfe_98 says the only currently known soultion if it happens to you is to reinstall the affected programmes.
If you contine to use Avira and a cleaning tool then you have to make that "C:\windows\temp\sentry_temp" an exclusion in the cleaning tool.

Personally I would be uninstalling the Avira and either letting Windows Defender (Windows Security) protect my system, or getting a different 3rd party AV.
An Antivirus should not be 'breaking' programme files when something simply cleans a temporary folder.
Defender will turn itself on when you uninstall Avira.
Windows Defender (Windows Security) has improved over the years and now does as well as most of the top paid for AV's in testing, and outperforms all but a few free AV's.

  9. It may have something to do with it, and it would fit with my suspicion.

But there again as you say it contained 'old_msedge.exe' it may have been to do with an Edge update, so you could roll back if needed/wanted?
Or it may even have been the old non-Chromium MS Edge? MS only started fully removing that recently.

I'll re-read your thread at Malwarebytes to see what he said about it.

Edit, nothing there in your thread it must have been in a PM, it's not important.
PS. I've let AdvancedSetup know what we have found here about Avira.

  10. It does make you wonder just what Avira have done (and how) so that deleting their temporary files, from a Windows temporary folder, modifies/wipes programme executables?

It's definitely not something that anyone would expect to happen.

EDIT- I think that I've possibly worked out what they are doing. (I could be wrong but it would explain why the exes get wiped if you clear that Temp folder).
If I am right then it's a half-baked safety/protection measure that isn't 'safe' at all the way they have done it, as we can see.
(I might check/test my idea later, but not on this laptop I'm not putting Avira on here).

  11. That's about all that you can do if the isue isn't showing anymore.

It is only 3 out of millions of CCleaner users who are reporting this happening, and one of those was for "a friend".
It would be nice to know what it was, but you/we may never discover that.

(We are always a bit cautious with 'me too' type posts, on investigation they are often not the same at all).

Of course all 3 of you could each be seeing something different happening that just sounds/looks a bit similar, and caused by something else but you only notice it after running CC.

You might be surprised how often that happens too.
The most common example is that many people have a corrupted Recycle Bin, but because it doesn't really cause a problem in use they only notice it when they run CCleaner and notice that the contents of the bin keeps growing even though Windows says it's empty. It's a bug in Windows that has been there since XP.

  12. That's often the way it goes with testing, what you are looking to replicate doesn't happen.

    It does indicate that either:

    1. It isn't CCleaner that is causing the problem.
    2. There's some weird cash between 2 or more of CCleaner's functions, that doesn't show up if you run them alone.
    3. The problem is a intermittent one.  (which are always a PITA to track down because they don't happen everytime).

I suppose the next step if you are up for it would be to run CCleaner as normal and see what happens.
(Again you run the risk of having to reinstall your exes again if they do get scrambled).

PS. Nice to have someone who is prepared to do a bit of testing to try and find what is going on, even if we don't seem to be any nearer yet.
I'm also wondering if something that you did as a result of working with AdvancedSetup at Malwarebytes has cleared whatever it was?
I know you didn't do that much, but maybe one of the tools used did something?

  13. WD My Cloud is not like a standard disk drive.
Whilst it shows up as a network drive (usually drive 'Z') your PC cannnot detect or connect to it like it does with a normal external drive, you have to use the WD Discovery program or the Android/iOS apps supplied.

Because it can't be seen as a normal drive then Recuva, or any other recovery tool, can't see it so can't access it to work with.

However you still have a chance, - if you are prepared to do a bit of work. (and void your warranty).

You need to shut down the My Cloud unit, take it apart and carefully extract the hard drive.
Like most products they are not designed to be easily user accessible , but like any computer hardware you can do it.
For an idea of what's involved see these videos:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfLzUWs6R1c&ab_channel=PetermanBuilds
    And 2:40 to 9:30 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYOMwBc2eno&ab_channel=SmallTechReviews

Once you have the hard drive out you can then connect it directly to a computer.
You'll need a SATA to USB cable, or an external hard drive caddy, both are readily available at computer shops or online.
Once it is connected like a 'normal' external drive then recovery software should be able to see it and work with it.

Of course Recuva or any other recovery software is never guaranteed to always get your files back, it depends just what has happened to the drive.
In particular if the 'Hard Reset' has reformatted the drive then it's going to make things more difficult.

  14. Not quite, but there is a workaround that you can possibly use.

It would depend on just what you mean by "tied into it", keeping in touch with email contacts is easy, Android apps may be a bit more difficult and you'll have to change it in each individual app that you have used it in, or possibly re-register with the app and start from scratch.

You can set a gmail account to automatically forward all emails to another email address.
I have that set on my gmail, so all emails received by my gmail are automatically forwarded to my private email.

You can forward to a different gmail address.
So you can set up a new gmail address, which gives a new google account, and then set the old one to forward to it.
    https://hotter.io/docs/email-accounts/how-to-forward-gmail-to-another-gmail/

If you reply to any of the forwarded emails from the new account then the reply originates from that new account.
(You have to watch that if forwarding to a non-gmail address that you might not want to be seen).

Of course you still need to go to the original gmail to clear it out now and again or you'll run out of storage space on it.

That should give you time to gradually change contacts, and other things, over to the new address, once they are all changed over you can forget the old one.
It's not going to be easy but it can be done with a bit of work.
For a while you will have some apps on the old account and some on the new as you change them over, and that can get confusing remembering which is which.

Why do you think google ties everything in together?
It not for your ease of use like they tell you, it's mainly for data collection and profiling of what you do online, but it also makes it more difficult to leave a google account behind.

  15. If you didn't uninstall the 'broken' one then just try installing the Free version that you downloaded.
If you haven't uninstalled the old one it will pick up the existing key while installing, just like installing a version update does.
(I do reinstalls of CCleaner frequently while testing things, and they always pick up my existing key).

If you did uninstall, or if it doesn't pick the key up, then you will need the key and name that you registered.

If you still have the email address that you used when purchasing then you can look up it yourself here: https://www.ccleaner.com/support/license-lookup

Once you have your key, open CCleaner Free and go to Options>Licence Key>Activate New Key. (Don't worry that it's not really 'new').
Enter your key in the box that comes up and follow the steps:

Not a section at a time... I mean each individual box AW7 has ticked

Yes, loose language on my part.

I meant treat each tick as an individual 'section' and after doing each one then check if the exes have been altered, then back and di the next tick.

(Due to the nature of the issue I'd probably start with the ones ticked in 'System', then in  'Advanced', and work on from there).

  17. Just another thought about the timestamps - how is your system clock in general? (I'm thinking about the CMOS battery).

PS. while Hazelnut's suggestion should help to narrow down just what section of the cleaning is causing the issue, (if you clean only one section at a time and then check the exes after each one to see if they have been modified), you'll be a good man if you do that testing knowing it will probably mean having to reinstall the affected exes again.
