  1. I use windows live messenger to connect to Facebook chat. I wonder whether they will send some sort of kill command that will disable the app, or if they're just going to kill the MSN service.
  2. Chromebooks are brilliant. Truly unappreciated, I think.
  3. I think it's CCleaner's responsibility to disable a (potentially dangerous) feature when an SSD is detected. If Mac was smarter it would prevent CCleaner from being able to run the tool, but I dont think it's the OS's responsibility to intercept every stupid thing 3rd party developers attempt to do. I've just discovered that the repair tool is disabled on the primary (operating system) disk drive. That means anyone who runs the Wipe Free Space tool on an unsupported volume is basically screwed, unless they can find the files created. That's actually a rather challenging task, as the location of said files seems to change. For future support queries, here's an image of the interface in question. It's called 'Disk Utility' and you can easily find it with the search function.
  4. On my Mac, the "Erase" option is disabled. I guess a condition is needed: if not using SSD, run the Erase tool. if using SSD, use the repair option. Do you want any screenshots of the interface for future troubleshooting posts?
  5. Another great Ubuntu innovation that will be dead on arrival...
  6. I think I've identified the cause of this problem. Most newer Macs ship with an SSD. The Hard Disk utility that handles all the overwriting detects that it's an SSD and prevents to 'Zero Out' feature from being used. Unfortunately, CCleaner isn't quite this clever and still performs the operation using the overwrite API's that (because of Apple's one-version-of-mac-for-every-device philosophy) are still present in the OS. Of course, the disk utility is responsible for cleaning up the files. If it detects that it's running on an SSD it won't complete this step either. This leaves the entire hard drive full. I had to use the "Repair Disk" function in the Disk Utility to get my space back. It's accessible in the First Aid tab, by clicking "Verify Disk" tl;dr: CCleaner has a fairly major bug.
  7. My Macbook should be delivered any day now. Hopefully once I get everything set up, I'll be able to help reproduce issues and help users fix problems. While this is the first Mac I've personally owned, we use them fairly exclusively at university... so I know things!
  8. +1 to Baby It's Cold Outside. Although that song's not about Christmas so much as it's about... promiscuity.
  9. I can't recommend JavaRa due to my obvious bias. But I can inform winapp2.ini that I did the JavaRa definitions myself one time. It was like watching beige paint dry In a wet and boring place. Like Ketchikan.
  10. ccleaner.co is an expired domain name. There is no actual website at that address, It's just a landing page promoting the .CO registry. .CO is a perfectly valid TLD. I suggest you look it up on Wikipedia. As the others have said, if in doubt always go to Piriform.com
  11. The Hyper-V environment lacks many of the API's Speccy requires. You should be able to get everything you need to know from the WMI interface without needing a 3rd party app.
  12. I love that they have use fictitious features and achievements to make their product likeable.
  13. You didn't read what was said. After the initial actication, Windows doesn't ever use the key again. It uses a unique ID that's associated with your hardware. No malware can change this. Also; your argument that "someone could take out the server" is silly. Microsoft would have every bit of data backed up more heavily than you could imagine. They could just re-deploy a new WAT server and the problem would fix itself in a few days once all the machines have re-validated themselves. Oh, and some cars do have a built in kill switch. It's used to prevent theft...
  14. Once Windows is activated once; a unique Windows install ID is stored MS's servers. This ID cannot be changed on the client side, therefore Windows will be able to re-validate itself again without issue. Your FUD is unnecessary.
  15. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Systeminternals Antivirus a rogue?
  16. I agree with the "bloatware" sentiment. They would have been much better off going with a plugin architecture; that way all the extra features could be added by users who desire them, while keeping the core app much slimmer.
  17. Google discovered that, to the average user; higher version number = better. Mozilla are just copying Chrome's versioning system (and accelerating it) to give the illusion of being a more advanced and progressive browser. The eventual goal is to eliminate version numbers entirely. Stack Exchange founder Jeff Atwood has an excellent piece titled The Infinite Version. It's well worth a read.
  18. Untrue. I'm having issues with the topic pages now. The CSS files aren't loading, citing an "Unable to decode data array" error.
  19. Now that's a game plan I have experience with
  20. Yep; you would need to create a license that permits modification (so that forum members can continue to curate and improve the file), but also restrict its use to a specific product (CCleaner). I'm not aware of any license like this that already exists, so you would need to find an intellectual property lawyer to draft and submit it for review. Technically speaking, until such a license is written Abelsoft isn't doing anything wrong. Immoral? Yes. Illegal? No. Since any new license wouldn't apply to previous releases of the file; Abelsoft could continue shipping the file until it becomes so ridiculously obsolete that there's not much point using it. Which would practically never happen. Wouldn't work. In order to edit the file it would need to be converted to cleartext. That cleartext could be copied into another file and parsed exactly as winapp2.ini is these days. This would also sidestep the licensing on the file; as the act of converting the file to cleartext would nullify the copyright over the proprietary format. Welcome to the pain of Open Source development. Regards, Someone who's been on both sides of intellectual property disputes more times than he cares to admit.
  21. I'm still getting 'no input file found' when connecting through 3G, and a semi-working forum when using a wifi connection. Something is definitely still wonky.
