#CVE-2021-29976: Memory safety bugs fixed in Firefox 90 and Firefox ESR 78.12

    Reporter Mozilla developers
    Impact high
    Description

Mozilla developers Valentin Gosu, Randell Jesup, Emil Ghitta, Tyson Smith, and Olli Pettay reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 89 and Firefox ESR 78.11. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code.

I just built a new system, and put 1 stick 8GB dual channel.

mmmh. are you sure that at the 8GB stick is "dual channel" to read?

perhaps there is on the label "double sided"?

there are two completely different things meant.

  4. 1 hour ago, Jbert49 said:

Most motherboards will report odd number of memory sticks as single channel.

its possible, that "dual-channel" will be deactivated if you have installed 3 sticks of RAM in your MB. but i dont know exactly, i dont have tried it

  5. 1 hour ago, Jbert49 said:

And if that is correct adding an extra third would not be wise.

yes, a 3. RAM-Stick for "dual channel" is not fine.

but a 4. RAM-Stick (if your motherboard have 4 slots) is nice.

  6. 1 hour ago, Jbert49 said:

So may I assume if I add 8GB more, same memory, correct slot it will report Dual?

yes. if your motherboard supports dual-channel. you must put the 2 sticks on the right slots... to activate "dual-channel"

    for example:

    RAM-Slot 1 + 3

    RAM-Slot 2 + 4

you must read it in your manuall for your motherboard how its managed. or simply tried it.

  7. I have also deactivated the hdd-write-cache for data-security against faster performance. Safer is safer :-)

on my laptop it seems i have perhaps also a hdd connection via usb3 and not via sata, because i tried deactivate/activate at bios and after reactivate usb3, w8 starts faster as without usb3.

  8. 11 gb is a lot. Have you tryed the "file-list-defrag" ?

    Its faster

Can you make a pic to see, what files are the biggest one?

Perhaps such files as hiberfil.sys and pagefile or so with the size of your installed RAM. There is shortly a great among of hdd-space in useage with this

With 8 gb of ram there are minimum 16 gb only for this files on your hdd.

This 2 files alone fragmented can be 3% or more with 380 gb used hdd ...

An old wisdom - dont touch a running system.

the only exclude for me is the graphic driver.

Also i dont use driver from microsoft. The same thing as above but in green instead of red ;-)

Windows 10 support is ending in 2025

Microsoft is set to unveil the next generation of Windows next week.

Microsoft has announced it's sunsetting support for Windows 10 in October 2025, including across the Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations editions. The last day of support is slated for Oct. 14, 2025.

The news, spotted Sunday by Thurrott, means Microsoft is ending its support for the operating system after a 10-year life cycle.

Microsoft only just rolled out its latest version of the Windows 10 operating system, the Windows 10 May 2021 update (version 21H1), but is set to unveil "the next generation of Windows" at a virtual event next week, on June 24.

so far for me... its a good choice to stay with w8.1 :-) the support ends at 10. january 2023

perhaps is w11 - or whats the name should be - nicer as the "real last windows" but i think this is not for free...

All that for memory and running better the laptop.

    Ram memory 1.4 GB.

perhaps you can take a look with ccleaner in your startup to save more RAM at XP-Boot:

    ccleaner -> tools -> windows

    and

ccleaner -> tools -> scheduled tasks

for example: i can see there some stuff that not have to be on at startup

    -> gimp.2.8.exe

-> jusched.exe (i mean its java updater) - i think there is also a deactivator in java itself... in the XP-control panel -> java -> settings
