  1. Just delete 'em Chill. I delete mine all the time. Doesn't hurt anything. They are just old junk files.
  2. Maybe Uncle Sammy will help push the cost down, somehow. (I'm dreaming !)
  3. What is your reading with http://www.speedtest.net/ ?
  4. Have you tried fixing it with Unlocker? Get it here.
  5. I'm afraid you've been duped by somebody masquerading as Piriform. In addition to taking your money they've installed malware on your computer. CCleaner is 100% free. Get your official CCleaner from here http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ Edit: We members are not permitted to help you deal with malware. Post your malware issue in Spyware Hell and an expert will help you remove the malware. As for getting your money refunded, I suggest you contact your bank/card provider. I remember seeing a similar post in the past, and hope another member will come to your aid and provide more advice.
  6. Mind boggling. And I thought my 12 was fast.
  7. FCC plans to give us Yanks 100 megabits per second within ten years. http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/03/16/nationa...dex.html?hpt=T2
  8. On those two programs I noticed the damage almost immediately after defrag. ChkDisk showed no disk damage, nor later when I finally decommissioned the drive. As to the information about omitting SVI from defrag, I obtained that from a tech item online a few years back and I cannot remember the source, so you got me there. I posted some months ago questioning the value of periodic defragging and asked if anyone could provide a link to a report of the results of a statistical analysis showing performance improvement from periodic defragging. No result. If such a paper exists I would love to read it! So right now to my mind the value of most defragging is theoretical - no proof. Betty
  9. Unfortunately there IS the possibility defragging can cause harm which is one reason why Sys Vol Info files are undefraggable. On my previous computer using a different defragger I did damage two programs. But I've had no issues the few times running Defraggler with my current pc.
  10. Yes. If you have a full 15% of your C drive in Sys Vol Info (Restore) files, plus a sizeable number of Temp Int files, and all the remaining files are defragged you will still have a high frag reading because Sys Vol Info and Temp Int files are not defraggable. Further, if you have a large capacity drive with a lot of free space defragging should not improve performance. My drive is now 54% fragged, which is normal. It fluctuates only a few points even without defragging. To see a substantial drop in frag all you have to do is clean out all your temp files, and delete all your system restore points. It may then drop to around 15% frag, but you lose the safety of Restore Points, and as the points build so will your frag reading. Frags on your HDD are like bugs at a family picnic. They'll begin reappearing a few minutes after a clean sweep.

My hunch is that the fragged files are mostly Sys Vol Info (Restore) files and Temp Int files, neither of which are defraggable. You will always have frags - it's unrealistic to have nil fragmentation because frags are created every time you do something with your pc.
  12. It won't harm anything. It will be just partially defragged. Edit: You have a lot of free space (76%), that is very good. So good, in fact you won't notice much (if any) performance improvement after a defrag. Mine is 54% fragged and my free space amounts to 74%. I've never noticed an improvement after defrag, so I quit defragging about five or six months ago. I can't explain why your defrag is taking so long. Mine was always very fast.
  13. It can't be fun being that rich. No privacy, surrounded by guards, like living in a prison, always worried someone's out to get your wealth (and think of the unending lawsuits by those wanting to get it.) Mom once said, "If you have money someone out there is going to try take it. No worry for us."
  14. Very smart or very dishonest ?
  15. I gotta remember this one the next time religion is discussed.
  16. I've been using SpeedFan for awhile. When Speccy was installed the two programs matched readings for HDD and CPU. Then a week ago SpeedFan stopped providing the HDD reading, so now rely on Speccy. Has anyone here also experienced SpeedFan failure?
  17. What's the advantage of wiping free space and/or MFT?
  18. About once a year I stick a pencil in each fan and blow out the inside with a DustDevil. Mouse & keyboard are black and don't show grunge very well, so I wipe down with rubbing alcohol only when needed.
  19. Thanks all for the help and links. It seemed to be such a bother for a trivial thing, so I decided to just let the files build and delete some every so often. Have plenty of empty space on C:
  20. godawgs, you're link gets ➜ "Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, some required files are missing, if you intended to view a topic, it's possible that it's been moved or deleted. Please go back and try again."

    Avast 5

Yesterday Alwil prompted me to upgrade to avast! 5. So far I'm very impressed, no problems.
  22. I don't use UAC. Original box text was highlighted before overwrite, text rechecked several times after discovering failure. I should have copied original command line text to notes for later retrieval. Too late now, unless some kind soul can post it, please.
  23. What am I doing wrong? Followed Dennis's instructions, copied and set for 5 days, pasted. Deleted all but 4 dates. Number of backups continue to accumulate daily - now at 7. OS Vista 32. My paste ➜ "C:\Program Files\ERUNT\AUTOBACK.EXE" %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\AutoBackup\#Date# /noconfirmdelete /noprogresswindow /days:5
