Where I want to run CCleaner is irrelevant.
My comment is entirely about "something changed" in the permissions requirement of the v6 release.
v5.91 and older runs just fine in C:\ProgramFiles\Portable\CCleaner along with several others....

    Hi bgavin:

Your error message indicates you use Win 7 SP1 (OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48).  Is your Win 7 SP1 OS fully patched to end of support (14-Jan-2020) and have you installed the KB4474419 security update that adds SHA-2 code-signing support for executables signed with SHA-256 digital certificates?  If you aren't sure, search your installed updates at Control Panel | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates for KB4474419.  When searching, enter the full KB number in the search box (e.g., "KB4474419" and not a partial string like "4474419".

I don't know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit OS, but if you browse to C:\Program Files\Portable\CCleaner, right click on the appropriate executable (either CCleaner.exe for 32-bit OS or CCleaner64.exe for 64-bit OS) and choose "Run as Administrator" does the executable run without an APPCRASH?

Did you have the same problem with CCleaner Portable v6.03 and/or v6.04? I believe v6.04 was the first version of CCleaner Portable to create the \Log and \Setup subfolders on the first launch the CCleaner executable (see my 23-Sep-2022 post in xClean's C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleanerBugReport.exe as Part of v6.04 Pro).  If you have the same APPCRASH with v6.0.4 (but not v6.03) then there could be a problem with the folder permissions of C:\Program Files\Portable\CCleaner that's preventing your CCleaner Portable executables from automatically creating those subfolders.

  2. Hi bgavin:

Are you posting this for information only, or are you requesting assistance?

I'm not sure why you would want to run CCleaner Portable from the C:\Program Files\... directory that has special ownership permissions (I assume you created your C:\Program Files\Portable\CCleaner subfolder manually) and is only intended for programs installed automatically with "regular" .exe or .msi installers, unless you use some sort of software updater utility like SUMo and want your portable apps in a "standard" location like C:\Program Files\... so your software updater scans them for available updates.  I  run CCleaner Free Portable v6.05 from a removable USB thumb drive, but I can also unzip the ccsetup605.zip files on my hard drive at locations like C:\Users\<myusername>\Downloads or C:\Users\<myusername>\Documents and CCleaner64.exe launches correctly.

    Hi Bert Klaver:

Thanks for the feedback. Just glad to hear your problem is resolved.

All kudos go to @APMichael. I believe they were the first user to suggest the corruption of .exe files might be caused by the Sentry feature in Avira on 11-Aug-2022 in AW7's CCleaner Corrupting Program Files, and APMichael was also the first to suggest <here> in that same thread that Avira users should exclude the C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder in CCleaner as a temporary workaround until Avira releases a permanent fix.

    According to ronster's 02-Aug-2022 post <here> on page 1 of AW7's thread:

    Quote

"...After a Custom Clean with CCleaner, some EXE files are corrupted. The files are still there, but the content has been overwritten with spaces. The sizes of the files seems to be the original file sizes of the specific exe file.  It affects many major applications: Excel/Word, VLC Player, Defraggler, ... The list is long. I have to reinstall every single application..."

The release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history indicate that CCleaner v6.05.10110 (rel. 24-Oct-2022) includes several bug fixes, including issues where Performance Optimizer "stopped various games and other apps from accidentally being put into ‘sleep mode’.  The list of affected apps doesn't include MS Office 2019/2021 but hopefully at least one of the bug fixes made to Performance Optimizer in v6.05 will resolve the problem being discussed in this thread.

If you have problems updating to CCleaner v6.05 see Melchior's 24-Oct-2022 thread "CCleaner could not be updated." Manual Check for Updates Fails.

    4) Yes, if I have uninstalled CCleaner (deleted from my PC), Google Drive does start up correctly (GoogleDriveFS is enabled; checkbox at preferences is checked).

It seems that CCleaner version 6.04 consistently disables/prevents GoogleDrive from booting when turning on the laptop...

    Hi Bert Klaver:

There is currently a known issue with Avira antivirus programs where a feature called "Sentry" (i.e., an engine called sentryeye.exe that is part of the heuristic/behavioural detection of Avira and BullGuard antiviruses) can move executables of several programs like MS Office, Chrome / Firefox / MS Edge browsers, etc. into a folder called C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp for monitoring.  When CCleaner, or any other disk cleaner, cleans the Windows temporary files the monitored executables are deleted. Until Avira fixes this bug the recommended workaround is to exclude the C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder (Options | Exclude | Add | Drive or Folder)  to prevent CCleaner from cleaning this folder (see image below).

See Avira user AW7's 11-Aug-2022 post in CCleaner Corrupting Program Files for a partial list of program executables that were being damaged when CCleaner  purged the contents of their C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder on their computer, as well as APMichael's 13-Aug-2022 post <here> in that same thread confirming that other disk cleaners like BleachBit cause the same problem when Avira is used as the antivirus.

If excluding this C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp folder in CCleaner solves your problem I would suggest you contact Avira customer support (if you have a paid Avira product) or post in the Avira Community and ask if they are currently working on a bug fix.

  6. Hi @Andrei CCleaner

I just noticed jango1242's 17-Oct-2022 bug report at Performance Optimizer Error who found that they could not launch Steam after updating to CCleaner Pro v6.04 because their Steam app was "Slept by an external application".  User jango1242 was only able to launch Steam after uninstalling CCleaner.

Is it possible the CCleaner v6.04 users posting in this thread who are having problems launching their MS Office 2019 and 2021 apps (i.e. editions of MS Office with a "perpetual" multi-year license) are affected by the same Performance Optimizer bug?

  7. Just an FYI that CCleaner Pro v6.04 user Travasuarus has reported having problems launching MS Office 2021 C2R on one of the computers they manage (a Dell XPS desktop running Win 11 Pro v21H2) in the 07-Oct-2022 AskWoody.com thread Office Home & Business 2021 Click-To-Run Apps Won’t Start.  We're still waiting for Travasaurus to report back if uninstalling CCleaner Pro solved the problem.

See my 10-Oct-2022 post # 2486971 in that AskWoody thread about potential issues with cloud services like OneDrive and Google Drive after CCleaner v6.04 is installed, although I have no proof that this is related in any way to problems some CCleaner Pro v6.04 users are having launching Click-to-Run editions of MS Office with a perpetual license (e.g., MS Office 2019 C2R and MS Office 2021 C2R) on their computers.

  8. Hi Bert Klaver:

What is the edition (Home, Pro, etc), version and build number of your Win 11 OS shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications, and what version of CCleaner Pro Plus are you using?  What is the name and version of your antivirus?

Does Google Drive start at boot-up if you uninstall CCleaner Pro Plus?  Some users have found that the latest CCleaner v6.04 prevents Microsoft Office from starting correctly (see Paul SEPA's 21-Sep-2022 CCleaner 6.04.10044 Prevents All MS Office Apps From Running in the CCleaner Bug Reporting board) and your problem might be related.

If Google Drive still doesn't launch correctly after CCleaner Pro Plus has been uninstalled then try some of the suggestions in How to Launch Google Drive on Startup on Windows? and Top 5 Ways to Fix Google Drive Not Starting on Startup on Windows and Mac.

I don't use Google Drive but there have been reports in the past where CCleaner (Tools | Startup | Windows) did not correctly enable/disable/re-enable startup programs (see Lee3's 2015 CCleaner Will Not Reenable Startup Programs for one example), so it's also possible that this bug has re-appeared in CCleaner v6.04.  If you have confirmed that "Launch Google Drive on the system startup" is enabled in the settings of your Google Drive preferences as shown below then confirm that Google Drive is also Enabled on the Startup tab of WindowsTask Manager.

  9. Hi Paul SEPA:

You might be interested in reading scoobydog's 16-Jul-2019 Office 16/Office 365 Potential Issues with CCleaner.  I didn't find any one particular workaround in that thread that solved the problem for all affected users (other than uninstalling CCleaner) but there was one suggestion <here> that CCleaner PRO was corrupting desktop and Start Menu .LNK shortcuts that were used to launch Office programs, and another <here> suggesting the involvement of OneDrive.

Do you use CCleaner PRO (note that I use CCleaner Free, which does not run in real-time or perform automatic cleaning and system optimization), and what is your current status since performing your system restore?  For example, are you currently using an older version of CCleaner PRO or have you uninstalled CCleaner from your system? It would also be helpful if your could provide the edition (e.g., Home, Pro, etc.) and build number of your Win 10 v21H2 OS shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications as well as the full product name and version number of your MS Office 2019 suite and VIPRE antivirus .

The release notes for CCleaner v6.04 (rel. 20-Sep-2022) are posted at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history.  I'm not sure what specific tweaks Avast / Piriform made to CCleaner PRO that could have caused the issue both you and off2hcky are describing.  My CCleaner Free doesn't perform the background tasks that run automatically in CCleaner PRO, and the only significant change to my CCleaner Free Protable v6.04 was the addition of a bug reporting tool that collects and submits telemetry data back to Avast / Piriform for analysis - see xClean's 22-Sep-2022 C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleanerBugReport.exe as Part of v6.04 Pro for a discussion about this new feature.  I'm not sure if the information logged by that CCleaner v6.04 reporting tool in C:\Program Files\CCleaner\Data\log\BugReport.log was deleted during your system restore, but if that log file is still on your hard drive it might give you a clue as to what CCleaner was doing while you were trying to launch your MS Office 2019 programs.

Hopefully  @Dave CCleaner  or one of the other Avast / Piriform employees who participated in scoobydog's July 2019 thread will jump into this thread and provide assistance.

Didn't you have that issue a few versions back where the Portable was updating itself and installing on the USB, those folders might have come from that install? Maybe delete them (maybe the whole CCleaner directory) and see if they come back when you download a new postable?...

.... CCleanerBugReport.exe is set to run silently as a scheduled task. It is triggered to run once a day at a set time. If you are logged onto your computer at the set time...

    Hi nukecad:

Are you thinking about the bug in discussed mogli's 11-Apr-2022 topic 5.92 portable broken [download 5.91 from website]?  Technically speaking, CCleaner  v5.92 wasn't "installed" on my USB thumb drive - per Andavari's 06-Jun-2022 post <here>, running the CCleaner64.exe executable just created unnecessary registry entries it wasn't supposed to because the CCleaner64.exe executable for CCleaner Portable v5.92 was not in the same location as the portable.dat file.  As I said before, I don't recall ever seeing those \Log and \System subfolders created with any previous version of CCleaner Portable (including the buggy CCleaner Portable v5.92) and I'm sure those \Log and \System folders were only created after the first time CCleaner Portable v6.04 was launched (and perhaps only after CCleaner64.exe crashed). I don't really care about the exact timing of when the \Log and \System subfolders were created by v6.04 since I already deleted both copies of CCleanerBugReport.exe that were bundled inside ccsetup604.zip and presume this would prevent any crash reports from being automatically sent to Avast / Piriform without my permission.

When I updated to CCleaner Portable v6.04 I deleted everything on my removable USB thumb in E:\Portable\CCleaner EXCEPT ccleaner.ini, downloaded a fresh copy of ccsetup604.zip from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and saved it to my hard drive in C:\Users\<myusername>\Dowmloads, unzipped ccsetup604.zip there, and then cut three of the unzipped files (CCleaner64.exe, portable.dat, and license.txt) and pasted them into E:\Portable\CCleaner folder on my USB thumb drive so they were in the same folder as my old ccleaner.ini file. I always update to a new version of CCleaner Portable this way so nothing is carried over from a previous version EXCEPT ccleaner.ini, so I don't see how those \Log and \System folders could be remnants of a previous CCleaner Portable version.

I should have mentioned that I had previously checked my Task Scheduler and there is only one task called CCleanerSkipUAC that checks the status of my setting at Options | Advanced | Skip User Account Control Warning each time CCleaner is launched (I currently have that setting enabled).  AFAIK it's normal for this task to be created for all editions of CCleaner, including CCleaner Portable.

PS those 2 folders are not new - in the installed version the Setup folder has been there for ages, I'm not sure just when the Log folder appeared but again it's been there for a while.

    Hi nukecad:

I don't ever recall seeing those \Log and \Setup folders created with any CCleaner Portable version prior to v6.04, but perhaps that's because previous versions have never crashed before.

I downloaded a fresh copy of the Portable ccsetup604.zip and unzipped and these are the only files and folders bundled inside the .zip file.

I was also able to confirm that CCleanerBugReport.exe is now included inside the \x64 and \x86 subfolders of CCleaner Portable v6.04, so it seems that executable is new to CCleaner v6.04.  However, my image <above> shows that I don't copy the \lang, \x64 or \x86 subfolders over to my USB thumb drive when I update my CCleaner64.exe executable, so CCleanerBugReport.exe is not present when I run CCleaner Portable from my USB thumb drive.  I'm not sure how my CCleaner Portable v6.04 could have created those \Log and \Setup subfolders on my USB thumb drive unless CCleaner64.exe (and / or the 32-bit CCleaner.exe) is responsible for generating the crash reports and CCleanerBugReport.exe has been added to automatically send those crash reports back to the Avast / Piriform servers.

  12. Are users certain that CCleanerBugReport.exe is part of the new reporting tool added to CCleaner v6.04, and if so does this executable automatically send crash reports back to the Avast / Piriform servers?

I asked a similar question in my 22-Sep-2022 topic Can I Disable New Reporting Tool in CCleaner v6.04?.  However, I use CCleaner Portable and do not have an executable called CCleanerBugReport.exe.  The only .exe executable or .dll library I keep after unzipping ccsetupxxx.zip is CCleaner64.exe (see image below). CCleaner Portable v6.04 still created the \Log subfolder (which currently contains 1 file called unp309859003616653267i-unhandled.mdmp) and the \Setup subfolder (which currently contains 1 file called config.def) so it looks like my Portable version is still capable of generating crash reports.  Note: I'm guessing my CCleaner dump file was generated on 22-Sep-2022 because I was unable to safely eject my USB thumb drive (the location of my CCleaner Portable files) after closing the CCleaner v6.04 interface and all open instances of File Explorer and had to kill the CCleaner64.exe process manually in Task Manager before I could eject my thumb drive.  This problem hasn't re-occurred since then.

I don't know if it's relevant, but all my settings in the Improvements and Offers sections at Options | Privacy | Privacy Settings & Information are disabled and I've blocked outgoing traffic for CCleaner64.exe in my Microsoft Defender firewall as instructed in the How-To Geek article How to Block An Application from Accessing the Internet with Windows Firewall.

    Hi Paul SEPA:

I use MS Office 2019 (including MS Outlook 2019) on my Win 10 Pro v21H2 laptop.  After reading your post I updated to CCleaner v6.04 and ran a Custom Clean and it doesn't appear to have caused any damage to my MS Office files. However, note that:

    • I use CCleaner Free Portable and only run manual Custom Clean scans (i.e., I do not allow CCleaner's PC Health Check, Performance Optimizer, Software Updater or Driver Updater to run on my system), and
    • I only do basic cleaning with Custom Clean scans and I do not allow CCleaner to clean my MS Office 2019 files (i.e., Custom Clean | Applications tab |  Applications | Office 2016 is DISABLED).

After my initial Custom Clean scan, which removed ~ 278 MB of files, I repeated the scan with Custom Clean | Applications tab | Applications | Office 2016 ENABLED to see what MS Office files CCleaner v6.04 would detect .  Note that I ran the scan but did not click "Run Cleaner" to clean these MS Office files off my system just in case you are correct that CCleaner v6.04 can actually corrupt MS Office 2019 installations.  Most of the 37 MS Office 2019 files detected were just MS Office .LNK shortcuts to recent documents and shouldn't cause a problem if removed, but the attached .txt file is a log of all the MS Office that CCleaner v6.04 suggested for removal if you'd like to review.

Just an aside, but is it possible your VIPRE antivirus prevented your system restore from running to completion?  The Appauls.com article Fix: System Restore Did Not Complete Successfully notes that many antivirus and antimalware programs that run in real-time protection mode will cause system restores to fail.  I've seen this happen with both Norton Security (see their support article Fix System Restore Problems with Norton Product Installed about Norton Product Tamper Protection) and Malwarebytes Premium.

The change log <here> forCCleaner v6.04.10044 (rel. 20-Sep-2022) states in part " We’ve added a reporting tool that will help us to identify the most common crashes and their causes" and after updating to CCleaner Free Portable v6.04 I noticed that new subfolders called \Log and \Setup were created after my first scan.

Is there a CCleaner setting I can disable to prevent this data collection, and is this reporting tool collecting and transmitting telemetry data back to the Avast/Piriform servers without my permission, or does it just store logs on the local computer?

  15. Hi crockhamtown:

I used Norton antivirus products on my computers for several years until 2019 when I purchased a Win 10 machine.

What is your Windows operating system and what older Norton product (e.g., Norton Security, Norton Internet Security, etc.) are you trying to remove?  Have you ever installed any other antivirus programs on your computer (e.g., McAfee, Kaspersky, etc.) that might need to be wiped off your computer before your new Norton 360 product is installed?  Remnants of other antivirus programs (including trial versions that shipped with your computer from the factory) can frequently interfere with installation of Norton products.

Did you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode as instructed in the support article Download and Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool for Windows (important: note the warning in that support article if you have other products like Norton Family installed)?  Running that tool in "Remove Only" mode will not clean 100% of of orphaned folders/files and registry entries of previous Norton installations uninstalled from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features, but what that tool leaves behind rarely interferes with the installation of a newer Norton product like Norton 360.

Manufacturers of antivirus products like Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc. all offer their own specialized removal tool to clean their antivirus off a computer [see the A to Z list maintained by ESET in their KB article Uninstallers (Removal Tools) for Common Windows Antivirus Software].  If you still can't install your new Norton product after running the NRnR tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode (and/or running the manufacturer's removal tool for any other antivirus previously installed on your computer) I'd suggest you post in the Norton 360 for Windows board of the Norton forum (assuming you have a Windows OS) and request assistance there.

I have already install v5.92 in my company pc. is it good or i have to replaced it too? As if i sign in to ccleaner than i will protected from latest virus.

    Hi Steve Kvin:

Did you use the Portable version of CCleaner v5.92 (e.g., the ccsetup592.zip file that you downloaded from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds) that can be unzipped and run from any location, or did you actually install CCleaner v5.92 on your computer using ccsetup592.exe or one of the other self-extracting .exe installers that was listed on that download page?  The problems being discussed in this thread only affected the Portable version of CCleaner.

Note that the https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds download page is now offering CCleaner v6.03.10002 (released 22-Aug-2022) and it is now safe to update to this latest version, whether you use CCleaner Portable or an installed edition of CCleaner.

You might also want to clarify what you mean by "As if i sign in to ccleaner than i will protected from latest virus".  CCleaner is basically a disk cleaner that can clean your browser cookies, temporary Windows files, etc., but CCleaner is not an antivirus and cannot prevent malware from infecting your system, and CCleaner will not automatically detect and remove malware like a true antivirus program. If you require further assistance let us know your computer model, Windows operating system, your antivirus, and which product (CCleaner Free, CCleaner Professional or CCleaner Cloud for Business) you are using.

  17. Hi Moustik:

Before you edited your post <above> you said you were using ccPortable, the PortableApps version of CCleaner.  As far as I know that PortableApps version is not endorsed or licensed by Piriform, the developers of the official CCleaner Portable build (ccsetup603.zip) available at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds, so I would suggest you post in the PortableApps forum at https://portableapps.com/forums and ask them if remnants of ccPortable could prevent Piriform's official CCleaner Portable build from launching correctly.

Note that Piriform advised users to continue using CCleaner Portable v5.91.9537 (rel. 16-Mar-2022) until CCleaner Portable v6.03.10002 was released on 22-Aug-2022 (i.e., Piriform pulled the buggy CCleaner Portable v5.92 from their official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and did not release CCleaner Portable v6.00, v6.01 or v6.02 on that builds page due to "compatibility issues").  If you installed PortableApps' ccPortable v5.92, v6.00, v6.01 and/or v6.02 I have no idea what problems, if any, this might cause on your system or whether this is why the official CCleaner Portable v6.03.10002 (i.e., unzipped from ccsetup603.zip) won't launch correctly now.

    don't work for me, doesn't launch. Windows 10 Professionnel 21H2 19044.1889...

    Hi Moustik:

Do you mean nothings happens when you unzip the ccsetup603.zip downloaded from the official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and then double-click on the extracted CCleaner64.exe file (assuming your Win 10 OS is 64-bit), or do you see some sort of error message or warning?  Since this is a portable utility I usually copy and paste the extracted CCleaner folders and files over to a removable USB thumb drive in a folder I created myself (e.g., I like keeping all my portable apps in a folder on that USB thumb drive called D:\Portable - I save my extracted CCleaner folders and files in a subfolder I named D:\Portable\CCleaner) but that CCleaner64.exe file should launch correctly from any location as long as portable.dat is in the same folder.

Also note that I keep the same ccleaner.ini file I used with the previous versions of CCleaner Portable  (i.e., the .ini file that stores all my custom settings) in D:\Portable\CCleaner and just re-use it so I don't have to reconfigure my custom settings every time a new version of CCleaner Portable is released.

What antivirus do you use? When a new version of CCleaner is released it sometimes takes a few days for the executables to be whitelisted (unblocked) by some antivirus scan engines, but I uploaded the new CCleaner64.exe to VirusTotal.com for analysis today and the report <here> gives that .exe file a detection rating of 0/68, which means that none of the 68 popular antivirus scan engines listed in that VirusTotal report detect the latest CCleaner64.exe as suspicious or malicious.

    Hi Moustik:

Please see employee johnccleaner's 22-Jul-2022 post <above>. CCleaner Portable v5.91 is still the recommended version at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds and Avast/Piriform is hoping (but no promising) to release an updated Portable version when CCleaner v6.03 is eventually released.

  25. Hi mogli / bgavin:

Just a warning that I launched CCleaner Free Portable v5.91 today (the Portable version currently recommended at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds) and saw this pop-up in my system tray asking me to update to v6.02 ....

    1912085463_CCleanerv5_91SystemTrayWarningCCleanerOutofDatebyFourVersions31Jul2022.png.22097317ef8f4b55112ea81a32057197.png

If you see this system tray pop-up be sure to select "Remind Me Later" to stay on the recommended Portable v5.91.  If you choose "Update Now" and download the v6.02 files I suspect you could create all the unwanted scheduled tasks and registry entries shown in my 04-Jun-2022 post <above> the next time you launch v6.02 of CCleaner.exe or CCleaner64.exe.

I don't know why I'm being nagged to update to v6.02 when I've specifically configured CCleaner Portable not to check for available updates but something similar has happened to me in the past.  See my 14-Jan-2021 thread How Do I Stop CCleaner Portable v5.76 From Automatically Checking for Updates?.  That particular problem wasn't fixed until v5.77 was released per my 05-Mar-2021 post <here>.
