  1. I don't know if @Dave CCleaner or any of the other Avast/Piriform employees are following this thread but it might make sense to move it to the CCleaner Bug Reporting board at https://community.ccleaner.com/forum/8-ccleaner-bug-reporting/ since the new Windows Defender Backup cleaning doesn't work as expected (i.e., it throws a "File Access Denied" error when it attempts to clean the protected C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsDefender\Definition Updates\Backup folder).

The new "Windows Defender Backup" rule doesn't delete anything here (Windows 11), any ideas? (That's kind of expected as the folder should have a strong anti-tampering protection.)

    Hi mogli:

    Thanks for reporting this.

The Sept 2020 github thread at Persistent Error When Deleting (Windows Defender Backups) would suggest that BleachBit developers also tried to incorporate a similar cleanup of MS Defender backup files into their disk cleaning software but ultimately removed that option because because they believed the deletion of these backup files was being blocked by Microsoft Defender's tamper protection self-protection module.  However, they must have found a workaround because I just tested BleachBit Portable v4.4.2 (Preview mode only - I didn't actually proceed with the clean) on my Win 10 laptop and 278 MB / 10 files in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsDefender\Definition Updates\Backup were marked for deletion.

I use Microsoft Defender for my real-time antivirus protection on my Win 10 machine and can use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility at Windows Administrative Tools | Disk Cleanup | Clean Up System Files | Microsoft Defender Antivirus to safely purge any "non-critical" Microsoft Defender files.  However, Disk Cleaner shows that there are currently only about 12 MB of "non-critical" MS Defender files on my hard drive ...

    Win10Prov22H2DiskCleanupSystemFilesMSDefenderAntivirus25Jun2023.png.6040c74a49e16710093370f7a3532eb8.png

... and Disk Cleaner doesn't appear to touch any of the 262 MB / 8 files of files in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsDefender\Definition Updates\Backup shown below that CCleaner v6.13 is failing to clean.**

** Note that CCleaner detects 2 fewer MS Defender backup files than BleachBit

I'm not sure why Piriform / Avast thought it was a good idea to add routine cleaning of these Microsoft Defender definition update backups to CCleaner when Microsoft clearly doesn't think it's a good idea, unless they're just trying to mimic what BleachBit is doing. If Avast / Piriform is going to fix this cleaning rule so it works as expected (which would likely require temporary disabling of Microsoft Defender tamper protection, which sounds like a terrible idea) they should at least move this new option under Custom Clean | Windows | Advanced (i.e, instead of under System) just to warn users that this type of cleaning should not be done on a routine basis.

I don't know what the cleaning rules for the event logs are....

    Hi kubinec12:

Just a thought, but if the CCleaner setting at Options | Advanced | Only Delete Files in Windows Temp Folders Older Than 24 Hours is ENABLED (the default) then perhaps the cleaning rules that apply to Windows temporary files also apply to log entries in Event Viewer.

Are the log entries in your Event Viewer that are not cleaned always less than 24 hours old?

...Someone did tell me that i need to get a RAM chip replaced, which i've yet to do, but i don't think that's the issue here, maybe, idk, i've just started noticing that the C drive icon goes from blue to red (getting full) as I browse the internet.  I just tried it again (the 2 attached pics), because it had turned red again just a few minutes ago...

    Hi markfeener:

Your images show a lack of free disk space, not free memory (RAM), although that might also be a problem if you have a faulty RAM module on your motherboard.

The first thing you should do is use the TreeSize Free utility to check all the directory sizes on your hard drive and see which folders are using the most disk space.  TreeSize Free is basically like "File Explorer on steroids" and allows you to view the contents of hidden and protected folders that might not be visible in File Explorer.

    1. Install JAM Software's TreeSize Free utility (available at https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free) .***
    2. Launch TreeSize Free and click the "Run TreeSize Free as Administrator" button on the Home tab of the toolbar. Note that this button does not appear on my image below because I have enabled "Always Start This Application as Administrator" on the Options tab.
    3.  Go to Home | Select Directory and then browse to the root of C:\ drive.
    4.  Sort the Size column from largest to smallest to see which folders are using the highest amount of  disk space.  You can expand each folder and drill down to see the disk space used by each subfolder and file.

*** I prefer to use the Portable edition of TreeSize Free (TreeSizeFree-Portable.zip available <here>). Just save and unzip the .ZIP in any location (I unzip in a folder I created on a removable USB thumb drive called D:\TreeSize ) and double-click TreeSizeFree.exe to launch.

See priyakansal's TreeSize Free image in their 28-Jun-2022 thread 15 R4, SA Generating 150GB Log Files showing that their hidden, protected C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation folder of their Alienware 15 R4 had grown to over 145 GB.  This sometimes happens when Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.5.x (also known as Dell SupportAssist Remediation or Dell System Repair) is installed.  This is the folder where Dell SupportAssist Remediation stores system repairs points (also known as system snapshots) and this folder should not grow more than ~ 15 GB to 20 GB in size, but on some Dell computers older system repair points are not purged when the maximum folder size is reached and this folder can grow to more than 200 GB in size.

I'm not saying that a similar bug in a Dell / Alienware program is responsible for your lack of disk space - for all I know you might store a huge number of large music and photos / video files in your C:\Users\<yourusername> folder that takes up lots of disk space -  but TreeSize Free should at least tell you what folders are using the most disk space.

I have a 250 GB SSD in my Inspiron 5584 and the TreeSize Free image below displays all my folders that exceed 1 GB in size .  TreeSize Free shows that I'm currently only using 110.9 GB of disk space in total, and that my C:\Users\ folder accounts for 37.3% (41.3 GB) of that 110.9 GB of used disk space.  If I expand my C:\Users\ folder I can see that the music files in my C:\Users\<myusername>\Music subfolder use over 20 GB of disk space, which is about what I'd expect.  Note that I do not have Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.x installed on my computer so my C:\ProgramData\Dell folder is relatively small.

CCleaner does not appear to be clearing everything as it used to, or maybe I'm just now noticing that there is more to be cleared by rebooting a computer than CCleaner handles...

    Hi markfleener:

Is Dell's SupportAssist program installed on your Alienware 15 R4?.  If SupportAssist is installed and you have not disabled automatic background scanning in the settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Set Your System to Automatically Run Scans and Performance Optimization] then the so-called "system optimization" scans (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) will also clean your system.

I uninstalled SupportAssist from my Inspiron 5584 because it was too buggy and consumed too much RAM and CPU, but before it was still installed I had this automatic scanning disabled (and NEVER ran Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network scans manually from the Home tab of SupportAssist) because these "system optimization" scans were too aggressive. For example, see my 12-Jul-2021 post in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the over-aggressive registry cleaner associated with the Tune Performance scan of SupportAssist.

...even with all programs shut down, I am having to reboot the computer to clear memory. ...

When you say memory, do you mean that your system is consuming unusually high amounts of RAM after all your third-part programs are closed?  When you close your browser or a third-party program that should unload the program and free up memory (RAM), but that's quite different from the disk cleaning that CCleaner (and SupportAssist) perform where scans will actually remove unwanted / temporary files from your hard drive to free up space on your hard drive.

Open Task Manager, choose the Processes tab, and then sort by the Memory column to see what programs are consuming high amounts of memory (RAM).  The amount of RAM being consumed should increase when a program is launched (i.e., when it's loaded into memory) and then drop when the program is closed.  If RAM is not being freed up when you close a programs then it's possible that programs has a memory leak (i.e., where the memory being consumed by the program's .exe executable will only be freed up by re-starting the computer).

For example, when I open both Firefox and MS Edge at the same time I can see I'm using ~ 60% of my total 8 GB of RAM ....

Yes, that corrected the issue. It was set to keep Google cookies.  Not sure why....

    Hi Jack35:

Further information is available in the CCleaner support article Select Cookies to Clean with CCleaner for Windows, which states in part:

    Quote

Adding Websites to 'Cookies to Keep' with Intelligent Cookie Scan:

CCleaner’s Intelligent Cookie Scan helps you by adding some popular websites to the Cookies to Keep list (if they are found on your computer when the scan is performed). The Cookies to Keep list stops you from being logged out of websites like Facebook and Twitter, or email providers like Gmail and Yahoo.

Note that I have removed ALL the cookies from my "Cookies to Keep" column that were added by the Intelligent Cookie Scan feature, including the avast.com and ccleaner.com sites.  I don't use an Avast browser or antivirus and I suspect Avast / Piriform would prefer that I keep those cookies in the "Cookies to Keep" list so they can track my activity when I browse on their websites, which I don't want.

I only run a Custom Clean scan with CCleaner once week so I also have my Firefox (Privacy & Security | Browser Privacy | History | Clear history when Firefox closes | Settings)  and MS Edge (Settings | Privacy, Search and Services | Clear Browsing Data | Choose What to Clear Every Time You Close The Browser | Cookies and other site data | ON) browsers set to automatically delete all cookies every time I exit my browser. From my default Firefox browser, for example:

  7. Hi Jack53:

Just a thought, but CCleaner has a feature called Intelligent Cookie Scan described in the support article Select Cookies to Clean with CCleaner for Windows that deliberately ignores cleaning of cookies that store login data for many popular sites like google.com, yahoo.com, etc.

When I first installed CCleaner the Intelligent Cookie Scan was enforced by default. If you want CCleaner to clean those exempt cookies go to Options | Cookies and see if you have any cookies (e.g., google.com, etc.) in the "Cookies to Keep" column.  If you're certain you want one of those exempt cookies cleaned then highlight the cookie and use the left-pointing arrow to move it to the "Cookies on Computer" column to ensure it's cleaned the next time you run a Custom CleanNote that I don't run Health Check scans so I'm not sure what effect that would have on cookie cleaning with Health Check.

Employee Dave CCleaner posted in martinu's (now re-named) 24-Apr-2023 thread CCleaner v6.11.10435 Crashes [TeamViewer: Under Investigation]  today and confirmed that the software developers are working on a bug fix for these crashes.  He advises that that affected TeamViewer users should disable TeamViewer cleaning at Custom Clean | Applications | Utilities | TeamViewer until a bug fix is released.

1 hour ago, Dave CCleaner said:

To confirm, there is an issue with CCleaner 6.11 specifically relating to running cleans on TeamViewer, which (as per @NE0) can be temporarily worked-around (until we release a fix) for impacted TeamViewer users by unchecking TeamViewer under Custom Clean > Applications > Utilities:

    ?name=image.png

This impacts all Windows versions, but the code in question is specific to TeamViewer cleaning.  It does not appear that any other cleaning rules are impacted and does not impact computers that do not have TeamViewer running.  The developers are currently working on a fix.  TBD at this point if a fix will be issued with the CCleaner 6.12 May release or in an earlier patch.

It might be best if you contact CCleaner support by email at support@ccleaner.com or online at https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and ask if this free offer is still available for residents of Ukraine.

I found a few older posts by employee Dave CCleaner at Free Subscription for Residents of Ukraine (12-May-2022) and CCleaner for Ukraine Licence Renewal (13-Nov-2022) but neither of those replies indicates if this March 2022 offer is still available in 2023.  The original 10-Mar-2022 announcement by parent company Avast at Avast's Response to the War in Ukraine only says "We are giving paying users an extension on their licenses for free. Users of our freemium products are now also able to get our premium products for free. And our existing free products are still available to those who want them without disruption....We continue to monitor the changing situation and will adjust our approach as needed".

I deliberately @mentioned employee @johnccleaner because I was hoping they would be able to get the information I was seeking directly from the software developers who added the new Firefox cleaning options.  CCleaner has damaged Firefox installations in the past because their QA team apparently does not test the potential effect of CCleaner on nightly/aurora/beta releases of Firefox before new (stable) Firefox versions are released to the general public (see my 03-Aug-2020 post in circcc's Problem with Firefox 79 ) so I'm always wary when Piriform / Avast makes any changes to Firefox cleaning.

I ran a Custom Clean today with these settings:

If the Software Updater in CCleaner v6.10 is working correctly it should detect that CPU-Z v2.0.5.1 (a.k.a. v2.05.1)  is actually the latest version.

I downloaded a fresh copy of CPU-Z Portable from https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html today and it appears that a new v2.0.5.1 of CPU-Z was released on Mar-13-2023, even though there's no change to the name of the English installers (i.e., they are all still named cpu-z_2_05-en.xxx)  and there is no mention of a v2.0.5.1 update in the version history <here>.  Here's what today's fresh copy looks like:

What new cleaning options are available for Mozilla Firefox, and does this only apply to the Mozilla Firefox Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app available on the Microsoft Store?  I just launched CCleaner Free Portable v6.10.10347 (using the same ccleaner.ini file that I was using for the previous v6.09.10300) and can't see any new options for the Custom Clean feature at Applications tab | Firefox, and when I click the "Analyze" button it doesn't appear that any new items will be cleaned for my desktop version of the Firefox v111 browser.

Please note that I don't want CCleaner cleaning anything in my default Firefox browser after the damage that CCleaner 5.69.7865 did to Firefox v79 add-ons (see my 03-Aug-2020 post in circcc's Problem with Firefox 79).

I've been following FlyHigh's 15-Mar-2023 topic 6.10.10347 about how the "expanded cleaning with 23 new options" in CCleaner v6.10 is starting some Windows services like the TeamViewer service to perform new cleaning tasks even if the user has deliberately configured the service not to run at boot-up, and I want to make sure that CCleaner v6.10 isn't doing something to my Firefox browser that it shouldn't be doing before I actually click "Run CCleaner" and allow it clean my system.

This isn't the first time that Avast / Piriform has added and automatically enabled new cleaning options that unexpectedly deleted data or made some change that users didn't want (see my 20-Feb-2022 thread Question RE: New Windows SubSystems Temp Files Cleaning in Cleaner v5.90  for another example).  I could see why they might do this for the Health Check feature - that's one of the risks of using this type of  "one size fits all" one-click cleaner - but a user's Custom Clean settings should never be changed without their permission.

  16. Hi Woolf:

I'm not sure what's going on with CPU-Z at the moment.  My free SUMo (Software Update Monitor) v5.17.2 has been detecting a v2.0.5.1 (a.k.a. v2.05.1) update for CPU-Z for a few days and the MajorGeeks site now says it's offering CPU-Z v2.05.1 at https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/cpu_z.html.  However, the English installers currently offered by MajorGeeks are still named cpu-z_2_05-en.xxx and not something like cpu-z_2_05_1-en.xxx.

The official CPUID CPU-Z download page at https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html#version-history where I usually get the .zip file for any new CPU-Z Portable releases looks like it's still offering the same v2.05.0 installers that were released on 01-Mar-2023, and if I launch CPU-Z v2.05.0 and check for an update (Tools | Check for a New Version) it reports I'm using the latest version.

There might be a beta version of CPU-Z v2.05.1 being used by a few users,  but if so it shouldn't be detected by my SUMo utility since I have disabled Options | Settings | Allow Beta Versions in SUMo.

Go to Option | Settings | CCleaner Home Screen and choose "Custom Clean" (not "Health Check") if you want to start at the Custom Clean interface when you launch CCleaner.

... But if you only leave the four files in the CCLEANER folder, I ask what is still working in the program and what not ????? ...

    Hi Rothirsch:

I haven't done extensive testing but I don't really care as long as Custom Clean and the registry cleaner work correctly in CCleaner Free Portable .

If you download and unzip a fresh copy of ccsetup609.zip from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds then the only two files in the \x64 subfolder (highlighted in red in the image below) are CCleanerBugReport.exe and CCleanerDU.dll.  CCleanerBugReport.exe is part of a new reporting tool that collects and sends telemetry data back to Piriform for analysis (this reporting tool was added to CCleaner v6.04 but never documented in the release notes <here> - see nukecad's 23-Sep-2022 post in C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleanerBugReport.exe as Part of v6.04 Pro), and  I believe CCleanerDU.dll is part of the Piriform Driver Updater, so if you delete that \x64 subfolder folder I assume those two features would not function correctly.

If you only keep ccleaner.ini, portable.dat, CCleaner64.exe and License.txt then your CCleaner interface will default to English, so if you use German or another non-English language you would have to keep the \lang subfolder (highlighted in green in the image below) as well.

I personally just ignore the install dates it shows because they can be wrong sometimes.

I've been using CCleaner for almost two decades and I personally don't trust any feature in CCleaner these days except Custom Clean.

Newer features that Avast / Piriform have added in recent years like Software Updater, Driver Updater, Health Check, Performance Optimizer, etc. are too buggy to be used safely, so I switched to CCleaner Free Portable a few years ago. When a new version of CCleaner is released I delete everything in my CCleaner folder except the configuration file (ccleaner.ini) and only keep three files from the new unzipped ccsetup6xx.zip file - the main CCleaner64.exe executable (since I have a 64-bit OS), portable.dat, and License.txt (optional).

  20. Hi Rothirsch:

No, I think it's a CCleaner bug that has to be fixed by Avast / Piriform, so reinstalling CCleaner Portable won't fix the problem.

You might also notice that the size of many of your installed programs is missing in CCleaner at Tools | Uninstall, especially for Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps downloaded from the Microsoft Store - see my 25-Jan-2023 post in lebsman340's Tools-Uninstall List Not Showing Size of Installed Program For Many Programs.  Piriform employee johnccleaner posted <here> on 13-Sep-2022 in lebsman340's thread that they would notify the CCleaner developers about these missing program sizes but they never posted back with a status update to tell us if or when this would fixed.

  21. Hi Rothirsch:

I reported a similar problem in my 24-Jan-2023 thread CCleaner v6.07 - Incorrect Install Dates at Tools | Uninstall. Forum Moderator Andavari posted <here> that these incorrect software installation dates in CCleaner are "a very old bug going back many years".

  22. Hi lebsman340:

I see the same thing in the current CCleaner v6.07 at Tools | Uninstall.  Please see the images I posted in my 23-Jan-2023 topic CCleaner v6.07 - Incorrect Install Dates at Tools | Uninstall that show that the Size column of the majority of programs (including 7-Zip) are blank.  Of my ~ 95 programs listed at Tools | Uninstall less than 15 have a Size listed.

However, the majority of my 48 installed programs at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features have a Size listed, including my current 7-Zip v22.01.

Part of the discrepancy in the number of installed programs is likely due to the fact that CCleaner's Tools | Uninstall also lists my ~ 45 Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps listed at Settings | Apps | Apps and Features (e.g., Calculator, Weather, Feedback Hub, etc.)  that are available from the Microsoft Store, but that shouldn't really matter. The "Windows Apps" tab of my Revo Uninstaller Free utility lists the Size of all these UWP apps.

  23. My CCleaner Free Portable v6.07 uninstall tool at Tools | Uninstall seems to have incorrect Install Dates for several programs.  For example, CCleaner correctly shows that Belarc Advisor Free v12.0.0 (rel. 11-Nov-2022) was updated from v11.5.0.1 to v12.0.0.0 on my machine on 14-Nov-2022, but:

    • 7-Zip was updated from v22.00 to v22.01 (rel. 15-Jul-2022) on 16-Jul-2022, but the Install Date in CCleaner is 10-Nov-2022.
    • Intel Driver & Support Assistant was updated from v22.7.44.6 to v22.8.50.7 (rel. 15-Dec-2022) on 17-Dec-2022, but the Install Date in CCleaner is 12-Jan-2023 (Note: the date of 12-Jan-2023 is the same date my Jan 2022 Patch Tuesday updates were installed by Windows Update on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 OS).

When I go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features the Installed On dates for my current Belarc Advisor Free v12.0.0 (14-Nov-2022), 7-Zip v22.01 (16-Jul-2022) and Intel Driver & Support Assistant v22.8.50.7 (17-Dec-2022) are all correct.

I don't use CCleaner to uninstall programs and rarely go to Tools | Uninstall so I'm not sure if this glitch was present in earlier versions of CCleaner v6.x.  However, I did find several topics for older versions of CCleaner where this same problem was reported - see jdranchman's 14-May-2012 Most Install Dates in Uninstall Tab Just Wrong for one example.

Does anyone know where CCleaner finds the Install Dates for programs (e.g., a registry entry for the last run date or .dll/.exe file property)?

  24. I use CCleaner Free Portable and never use the Health Check feature (only Custom Clean), so could someone confirm if the following paragraph in the support article I’m Using Health Check. Can I Customize What Is Being Cleaned? is still correct:

    Quote

Health Check doesn't save your cleaning preferences:

Health Check reverts to its recommended default settings once you've finished cleaning and optimizing your computer. If you want to customize what Health Check cleans, you need to re-do this manually each time you use it using the method we mentioned above.

I know that Health Check always uses the "recommended" (default) settings of Custom Clean and that any changes you make in Custom Clean do not affect what items are cleaned by Health Check (see the support article Will Changes I Make in Custom Clean be Stored if I Use Health Check Later?), but does the quote above mean that that if you change the basic customization options for web browser and system data cleaning in Health Check (e.g., if you disable cookie cleaning in the Privacy tab of Health Check) that Health Check will just revert back to its default settings the next time you run it?

  25. Hi Novice55:

See Piriform employee Laurence CCleaner's 18-Jan-2023 post in Wisewiz's CCleaner Keeps Throwing "Debugger" Subkeys Into the Registry, which states:

    Quote

"I have spoken to our development team and as has been previously suggested they tell me that these registry entries are connected to the Performance Optimizer tool and allow Performance Optimizer to wake up programs that have been slept.

Deleting these keys will prevent Performance Optimizer from working correctly, if you want these keys not to be present in the registry you can wake the affected programs up using Performance Optimizer."

That seems to confirm your 10-Jan-2021 suggestion <above> that the problem is likely caused by Performance Optimizer and that you might be able to wake affected programs on the "Sleeping Program" tab of Performance Optimizer .  However, the 12-May-2022 CCleaner blog entry Our CCleaner 6 app is out now with a new, patented Performance Optimizer and improved Software Updater states in part that:

    Quote

"Performance Optimizer is a patented feature that’s an industry first, with tangible benefits for both old and new PCs. It detects and stops all inactive programs from draining your PC’s resources and puts them “to sleep” whenever you’re not using them — but is smart enough to enable them the moment they’re needed...".

This "smart sleeping" of applications by Performance Optimizer doesn't appear to be working as expected, and it would be helpful if someone from Piriform / Avast could confirm that they are aware of the problem and are working on a bug fix.  Performance Optimizer should not prevent apps like Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365 from launching when the are needed by the user, and expecting users to go the Sleeping Programs tab and manually waking up "sleeping" programs is not a permanent solution.
    ________________________________________________

I should also note that Win 10 / Win 11 is already smart enough to automatically suspend low-priority UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps and free up CPU and RAM to improve system performance.  My CCleaner Free Portable app does not include Performance Optimizer, and my Win 10 Pro v22H2 Task Manager marks suspended processes with a green leaf icon.
