hi polly, think you have to bring more information like hardware specifications..and what programas you have,cpu-memory ram... maybe your old pc has dust inside,.. you may need a"safe" registry cleaner like the one from auslogics [freeware],,and then a good free registry defragmenter [winaso registry defrag]... -but what you need first is to "untick" system restore.run a program like privacy eraser pro [trial] it will clean your machine from junk, let overs in windows and browsers.. -run malwarebytes [free] and superantispyware [free] besides your updated antivirus.. a good defrag utility like the defraggler.. ---..and then post back with your specifications...
-
make sure to backup your drivers..justin case.

wpw,,registry defrag helps a lot ,,try the free version from winaso, it will defrag, compact your registry,,you may also consider pagedefrag.

try to defrag in safemode, but first disconnect from internet,,,,then disable or pause till next reboot your antivirus. in safemode run defraggler

what i do is to turn off sytem restore like once a week and i gain like 4-500mg..but for example if you find a trojan or malware, you have to turn off system restore, then chech it again for gaining performance you can follow black viper sites suggestions.,,also from shields up..advice to "untick" file and printer sharing, client for microsoft network. also i benefit a lot from defraging my registry with a free program from winaso -winaso regdefrag- is really good. good luck
-
tcoffeep i don't use host files yet since i don't know which one to use. now..i can go to that page no problem.
-
thanks for the informatiom. --also i see HOSTMAN has too many betas lately released and last beta was release 10-28-08 and the stable version was release 07-23-08 sine this program can merge the other hosts files "i think" is better.but like i said before they only release betas lately.
-
hey guys one question: never worked before with host files:...does it blocked ads, banners, pop outs from sites or block the whole site? ..if it block those pesky ads,,it works like ad-blockers?

well i was reading about this defrager and isee that it deletes some restore points. the program looks good, and nowadays there are more defraggers.. ........................ Why do I have more diskspace after running MyDefrag? Running MyDefrag can cause the Microsoft Shadow Copy service to clean up (delete) some restore points, resulting in more free diskspace. It can happen with all defragmenters and optimizers, not only MyDefrag. The Microsoft Shadow Copy service makes snapshots of the disk, and is used to get a consistent view of the disk by services such as restore points and backup. MyDefrag does not change files (it only defragments or moves them), but it does change the disk (moving a file is a change to the disk), and the Shadow Copy service remembers all these changes in big files in the "C:\System Volume Information\...." folder. When the total amount of diskspace used by shadow copies exceeds a threshold then the oldest snapshot (restore point) is automatically deleted. To release the diskspace used by restore points see the How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP article on the Microsoft website. The threshold can be changed with the "vssadmin" command, see the vssadmin manpage. In my opinion Microsoft should make the Shadow Copy service smarter, so that it uses less disk space. MyDefrag is build on top of the Microsoft defragmentation API, so it is entirely possible for the Shadow Copy service to see what is happening. About restore points Restore points are a backup of certain Windows system files, such as drivers, registry, menu, desktop settings, and more. They do not backup anything else, no user files whatsoever. Also, restore points are deleted automatically (see above). You should therefore NOT rely on restore points in any way. Personally I always turn them off, saving a ton of diskspace.
