Hello Norskey, Welcome from me also. Thanks for your information. Do you have a link to this "fix" and possibly a discussion of the problem. I am sure that this will help many other members. Best wishes, davey
  2. Hello Tom, Welcome to the forums !!! CCleaner has all the data that it uses "embedded" within the program, now. In the past these were separate .ini files . You can get a copy at this link and unzip it and see exactly what is "embedded". http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=119043 Using a winapp2.ini file as developed by the members of the forums will also increase what is checked for and cleaned. You can unzip a copy of this file in your CCleaner folder and it will take effect. The source is listed at the bottom of this first post. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...mp;#entry107895 These and other useful links are available at the top of each forum. They are listed as Important Topics. Best wishes, davey
  3. Hi again Tot, No need for an apology at all. You noticed something that did not seem normal and you reported it. Your report confirmed something that I thought I noticed also but I was not too sure about what I saw. I am glad that you reviewed that article on the Vista Defragmenter. I was going to refer it to you. This news about the MFT is good news to me and will probably be good news for many WinXP users. This makes me think that the Defraggler developers are making more improved defrag features available to WinXP users. similar to the Vista Defragmenter. As far as I know there is only one third-party defragmenter that can defragment the MFT. I feel Defraggler may be at that point or very close. Good luck, davey
  4. Hello zieuas, Welcome to the forums!!! Thank you for your input. Refer to the following link for more information regarding your problem. Too much "defragmentation" can slow down "your" type of processing also. You do not need to "defragment" so often. Especially since you are using Vista. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=118622 Run the Vista Defragmenter and you will see most of your "lost" space freed-up. The space is being used by Vista. Good luck, davey

    do what first?

Hi ralf, There are many third-party programs that have been developed to perform "defragmentation". Many also include disk optimization methods and strategies that improve the performance of a PC. Some products perform better for certain types of users than others. This really depends on how the PC is being used. Most users don't need much "optimization" as much as they need "defragmentation". Defraggler's speed in defragmenting files is very desirable for IT professionals and regular users alike. I consider myself to be an average user and I find that I hardly ever need to do "whole disk" defragmentation anymore. By using Defraggler to defrag all files prior to running CCleaner, my disk stays in healthy condition and no "optimization" is needed. I use the following method. #1. I run Defraggler using the GUI to Analyze first. Then I select the "file list" tab and I check all files for Defragmentation by checking the box next to the "Filename" heading and selecting "Defrag checked". This defragments all the files. Of course it takes the longest time the first time that you use it. From then on it it is very quick, taking only a few minutes at the most if used frequently. This is usually prior to running CCleaner. #2. Every now and then I select Action in the Defraggler toolbar and select Defrag folder and defragment complete folders. #3. Rarely but when necessary I select "whole disk" defragmentation but I have not needed this in several months. After defragmenting, your PC will take a little time for Windows to relearn where files are repositioned but the speed will increase soon. Some users insist on constant "whole disk" defragmentation and for some this is necessary. For most, it does not give enough return in benefits versus the work necessary to perform the "whole disk" defragmentation. "Whole disk" defragmentation is necessary very infrequently but it does have benefits if it has never been performed. You may only need to defragment files as I do. I have done much personal testing and I find "whole disk" defragmentation of little benefit to most users. See these posts for further explanation and more detailed information. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=112671 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=118211 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=117806 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=116118 Good luck, davey
  6. Hi ralf, Welcome to the forums!!! Your question and answer directly relates to your other post. The files and fragments figures that you are looking at relate only to files. When you defragment the "whole disk" as you are doing in this circumstance you are actually performing more than defragmentation. You are also moving data from the inside areas of the disk to the outside areas of the disk. This is called "optimization" of the disk. Some logical decisions are also involved in this data movememnt. Defraggler will have more and more "optimization" options and processes added as it evolves. See my answer to your other post also. Good luck, davey
  7. Hi Alan, The .dll s are there in case someone other than English speaking users will be able to use CCleaner when you plug into their PC. The portable.dat file forces the Save settings to INI option to be set and also prevents it from being turned off. This way someone's Registry can not accidentally be changed. The copy of the embedded .ini files will come in handy if you want to see what is built into the program as regards what application areas (winapp.ini),system areas(winsys.ini) and Registry(winreg.ini) issues are checked. They have no effect on the program themselves. If you copied any of these files and changed them and renamed them as winapp1.ini, or winsys1.ini or winreg1.ini then their contents would override what is embedded in the program. The winapp2.ini file contents will take precidence over the other winapp.ini or winapp1.ini contents. I don't know what explains the C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\413677275\ files except maybe a difference in time. You should see no difference in what is cleaned or not cleaned from the Portable build versus any other build. You should backup and such just like before. You may want to put a copy of winapp2.ini into your Portable folder also, if you normally use it and know it's effects on the other PC's that you maybe cleaning. That is your choice. Good luck, davey
  8. Hello Stones, You will find documentation on the Include and Exclude Options in the CCleaner Beginners Guide. Improvements have been made to make it easier to use these features. The best way is to try them. You can now browse a "tree structure" to identify specific files or folders. The Guide is not currently up to date with these improvements. http://www.ccleanerbeginnersguide.com/ CCleaner Beginner's Guide.com Bookmark and save to Favorites You provided other helpful information in the past. Can you give us some "specific" details as to "your" problem ? Good luck, davey
  9. In my testing of Defraggler "whole disk" defrag on WinXP Pro SP3 I did notice that the MFT had been changed from 3 to 7 fragments. I also noticed in further testing that the MFT fragmentation went back to 3 fragments. It never caused me any problems in normal processing. This testing was with v 1.03 . Maybe some input from the developers would help clear up things. davey
  10. What I meant by "locational" was the fact you (in Ontario) have a very different layout for Filehippo than I have and many of the others. Mine from Filehippo.com look like this with my IE7Pro Ad-Blocker turned off (disabled). I am not sure what may be causing the difference between what you get from Filehippo.com and what we get. Notice The font for "ads by Google" and the up and down arrows which allow the user to roll the ads up and down to see more ads if you can believe it. We show 5 advertisers where you only show 1. Of course that 1 ad is very strategically placed to where a user might think they are supposed to click on that in order to download CCleaner. This is by "DESIGN" not accidental. It is a very deceptive practice and it ticks me off, tremendously!!! I will never buy a product from such a deceptive company !!! I go out of my way to tell others, also. DO NOT DEAL WITH SUCH COMPANIES. Would you trust the Registry software or any software from such companies ? I certainly would not. davey
  11. Hi Ozzie, You are really trying to defrag very large files that are only 10 fragments a piece ? For files that large you are asking a lot of work to be done for no benefit but if you insist then you should run the regular Vista Defragmenter first. You are possibly having some conflict with Vista System Restore programs and mirror files etc. Try the latest version Defraggler v1.04 . It has many fixes made to it since v 1.03 . Defraggler is still only being fully developed and problems will arise especially with Vista. You might also just try doing a few files at a time. I would try the smaller files first. When you give us an update, please give us some idea about these files and also some snapshots . Good luck, davey
  12. Yeah AJ, Most of those guys have done something to mess up their PC and come to the Registry Issues tool thinking that somehow that is going to "FIX" their problem. Most times they don't know what they are doing. Perfect example of "If you don't know what the "real" problem is then ask for help. Don't try fixing things that you don't understand. Otherwise, you end up breaking things that weren't broken in the first place." I know that you are very experienced and I have seen that you are experienced enough to ask for advice when needed. This comment was for other users not you. davey
  13. Hi TUNDRA35, You can try this . http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...#entry589490598 davey
  14. This topic came about after doing some "IE7PRO searches". I was gong to respond to login123 in another Lounge thread http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=119323 but I figured this deserved it's own thread. Just like in computers, a little knowledge about anything can get you into trouble. I help a friend in his automobile repair business and I see very similar situations maybe once a month. I have seen customers locked inside their own vehicles and they could not get out without help. I ran across this while doing a little research. ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing) Laughing with them not at them. Locked out and locked in. http://www.maynardville.com/article/g7.htm Have you any similar stories to report ? Thanks login123, I agree. Thanks, davey
  15. Hi Klaus, It looks like you are doing everything OK on your PC. Your cleaning is taking the average amount of time as far as I have seen from other users experience also. I think Windows Disk Defragmenter is the best thing for MOST PC users. Just don't over do it. If the Defragmenter says that you don't need to defrag then DON"T defrag. The free spaces spread around your Hard Drive are beneficial not detrimental as some users think. I would follow the advice to lower the amount of space allocated to Temporary Internet Files and run CCleaner more frequently if the amount of time that it takes now bothers you. Most of the users here use from 50 MB to 150 MB for allocation purposes. I find around 2 GB good and safe to provide enough System Restore Points for most XP users. I have had as low as 1 GB but I have had system restore points as large as 600 MB when dong some major installs and uninstalls. I am the kind of person that likes a few different things available for recovery purposes. ERUNT has saved me also and I think all XP machines should have it. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ Good luck, davey
  16. I always give this advice as we never know how the system has been upgraded, system restored, repaired whatever. It is always best to be sure the most basic of things are correct. Many times I forget to tell users to go to MS updates and get their software up to date. The PC I am currently using had never been updated for 3 1/2 years. I am sure that you keep your PC in proper shape. davey
  17. Hi swan-x, Welcome to the forums. The Advanced cleaning options are installed at "default " settings of "OFF". These cleaning options are for Advanced users for special purposes. Advanced does not mean "better" when it come to cleaning. Turn off those Advanced cleaning options. Many of your settings have now been reset. You will have to reset those settings. We will need more specific information to help you. http://www.ccleanerbeginnersguide.com/ CCleaner Beginner's Guide.com Bookmark and save to Favorites New Users Advice for CCleaner Start here with this link and follow its advice. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=105208 Also see this link about the Registry and newbies. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=96510 Good luck, davey
  18. Some thing brought it back. http://www.imagespeech.com/index.php
  19. Maybe it is this side of the pond thing. Do Image Hosting sites do "scheduled" maintenance near the end of the month. I can't get ImageSpeech or MrBrownstone's http://screenshots.haque.net/screenshots/v...nshot-33917.png davey
  20. Hello John, "Cookies to keep" is kept in the Registry unless you Check the option at Option > Advanced Save settings to INI file. I recommend doing this . Once you get all your settings and "cookies" set up then you should copy this file to another safe place. It is kept in the C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder . It will be deleted if you uninstall CCleaner. So you definitely should keep a copy. It also can get corrupted if you turn the option off by accident. http://www.ccleanerbeginnersguide.com/ CCleaner Beginner's Guide.com Bookmark and save to Favorites The file is called (cc)leaner.ini file .( the name begins with 2 small cc's.) Good luck, davey P.S. You can install the new version right over the prior version.
  21. There are conflicts occurring between CCleaner and Firefox 3. For now, it is best to run them at completely separate times. The best advice has always been to run CCleaner with no other processes running. Any more specific information will be helpful. Your English is O.K. It doesn't sound shifty at all. davey P.S. Welcome to the forums. Thanks for your report.
  22. I never used the old version but it was written a lot simpler in VB back then. I thought you might be talking about back in those 1. x versions. They updated to C++ for many reasons. I have seen it run the cleaner in less than 1 second but very few times with very small amount of data. There is a lot of sorting and things going on now but with your PC it should still be faster than mine. How often do you use CCleaner and approx. MB build up in Temp Int. files ? davey Did you update from MS and reboot ? Personally, I would never turn off System Restore. Surprisingly. it saved my butt. I do have it's size changed to about 2 GB . P.S. You can use Defraggler to see how defragmented those Temp Int. files are. IF you have files with hundreds of fragments then you want to do some "file" defragmenting at least. I never do "whole disk" defragmenting anymore. It isn't needed for me. Matter of fact it would slow down my processing. I have tested it out in my case. "File defragmentation" is all I need. BTW, you can use Andavari's Defraggler Shell and defrag just certain folders and not even touch your "movie or music" files or folders. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17287
  23. Like hazel says and also you can always use Dennis pinned post in the Lounge forum to find a nice list of "Safe" and easy to use sites. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=91981 Plus you can "click" on them. davey
  24. It is not unusual for AVG and CCleaner download wrapper. Seems to occur every 4 or 5 months. I have the latest CCleaner and Defraggler and AVG 7.5 . Updated 7.5 a while ago but no action for me yet. Just did a scan on CCleaner. Found nothing. And scan Defraggler.Found nothing. Downloaded dfsetup102.exe from filehippo and scanned with latest AVG 7.5 nothing found. You can't get dfsetup102.exe from Alternative downloads. When did you last update your AVG 7.5 ? I recommend that you try update again. You may have forgotten to do this if you just got AVG 7.5 . Try scan again after that.
  25. Hi digiweb, Thanks for the report. What version of AVG are you using ? From where did you download these versions of CCleaner and Defraggler ? I would not worry. It is most likely a "false positive" as AVG . It will most likely be corrected very soon. davey
