  4. i having been trying the different firewall lately... norton firewall sygate firewall outpost firewall... i found that except for outpost pesonal firewall, the rest takes up a lot of resources... norton firewall have many process images... which takes up a fair amount of resouces each... but added up together, they takes up a lot... sygate firewall have a single process image... but it takes up more than 15,000K of memory usage alone... outpost firewall have a single process image... and take its up much lesser compared to others... but outpost personal firewall seems very difficult to use... i takes some times to play around with it... zonealarm have 2 process images... vsmon and zlclient... both take up around >6,000K of memory... rather huge... is there any other good firewall...?
  5. well... i dont download from www.download.com ... i download from SnapFiles! http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/misctools/fwparents.html basically, i dont think using these software will help... because your friend can disable it... and there he goes again... so if he really really want to surf adult sites, there is hardly anyway to stop him...
  6. A brief explanation, ports allow applications to access to the internet and network if your have one... probes are transaction, or program, which is used to gather information about a system or the network. ports can be either 'open', 'close', or 'stealth'. 'open' ports are visible and it reponse to probes. this is rather highly dangerous because it will allow hackers to easily gain access to your system, especially if open ports are not necessary... system with too many uncessary 'open' ports are also a easy target for network worms... 'close' ports are visible but not open. meaning that the ports are not in used... this however, due to it is still visible, it allow hackers to know that your computer are available and become a possible target. applications cannot access to the network if the required ports are close... 'stealth' port is not visible and does not reponse to probes. meaning that your system is hidden in the internet network. your scanned result should contain if not all , as many stealth ports as possible... you cannot close all the ports... they might be needed for applications to access to the network... Like I said this is a brief explanation, and somebody could probably give a far more detailed explanation.
  7. i believe that this problem is not cause by the "application" tab... since you have bring up this question... i want to ask whether is there a way to disallow CCleaner to remove files in the windows temp folder? i know that there is one option that says "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" but does this question stop CCleaner from cleaning?

  11. i also recommend google toolbar... alternatively, you can also switch to other browser which have build in pop up blocker... if you are running Windows XP SP1 or Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 SP4, you might even want to try msn toolbar, which beside blocking popups, also allow you to use tabbed browsing in internet explorer...
