  1. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to close Norton.  You can disable various aspects of security (which didn't help) but it's not a single app.  There appear to be about a dozen processes which I'd have to end using Task Manager.  One or more of these appears to be tying up the logs.

I'm going to hold off on this because of another issue.  I'm soliciting input on another security software in the Software forum.

    Thanks!

I put links for a very special custom suite on you other post. B)

  2. No, I have hated f secure ever since I found out it installed back web lite. The best antivirus I have found EVER is Etrust. Here is a link for a one year free trial:

    http://www.my-etrust.com/SubscriptCenter/M...gistration.aspx

(If you dont like it just uninstall it but I gurantee you that you will want to keep it.)

If you need a security suite than I suggest you get Etrust antivirus and the following:

    Antispyware:

Follow link and get various programs:

    Firewall Zone Alarm Free 5.5.094.000

Make sure you download that version (5.5.094.000)

Congratulations you now have a security suite that is leaps and bounds better than Norton or F Secure absolutely free!

  3. You still have windir32.exe are you sure you updated everything before you scanned with it? If you did than do this:

    1. Open hijack this and choose scan only.

    2. put a check mark next to this and choose fixed checked:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe

    3. Boot to safe mode and scan with ewido and spyware doctor.

    4. Reboot to normal mode and post a new log.

Make sure everything is updated before you start.

  4. I only play two on my pc

    America's Army(just recently started playing).

Unreal Tournament 2004 (I am the master of this game averaging 100-120 in onslaught sometimes higher.)B)

On my playstation 2 I play

    Socom 2

    Mortal Kombat Deception

    Project Snowblind

    Starwars Battlefront

    and a few others

I mostly spend all of game time on unreal though. ^_^

  5. I know some of the people here play games so I thought I would mention the redisighn of the gamspot site. Unlike the very crappy job they did on download.com(I'm still very pissed about that one) this is actually pretty good. The page loads a lot better and there are less flash adds(at the moment). Anyway check it out.

If you have never been to this site before gamespot is in my oppinion the best videogame site on the web. You can find all of the upcoming new and reviews and some of the best codes and guides that can be found anywhere.

  6. I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router and couldnt be happier with it. I have it connected to my pcs, ps2, and occasionally a lap top. It has good speed and a very nice built in firewall.

  7. Can you elaborate?  I checked all firefox settings and there is no setting for preloading.  Still unable to view maps.google.com and several other images in firefox after running CCleaner.  :(

Its not a default setting its a seperate program that can be downloaded. I figured you might be using it which would mean firefox would be open while running CCleaner.

    Try this:

Go to tools>Options>Web features and make sure that the boxes that say enable java and java script are checked along with the box that says load images. Also make sure that the box that says "load images for originating site only" is unchecked.

Also what extensions do you have insatalled?

  8. Mr.G (the programmer of CCleaner) has already given his response as to why CCleaner cleans the prefetch.

The prefetch feature within XP essentially creates a .pf file every time an EXE is run. This records the way the program loads and saves this data to optimize it in the future. (It's a bit more complicated but that's essentially it.)

Now these files will stay around on the system until the 128 pf file threshold has been reached. XP will then start deleting the old ones for you. The problem is that most users only have around 40-70 programs and services that they run on a regular basis. Which means the prefetch data will remain for an additional 58 to 88 programs before they get deleted. This will mainly include system updates and demo software, that are only run once or have been removed. You'll also have a record of all the exe filenames you've run (including any bits of dubious software!)

CCleaner will remove the prefetch pf files that haven't been accessed in the last 2 weeks, so removing the old and unused ones, but leaving all the programs you use most as fully optimized. Granted this will only save you a small amount of diskspace, and isn't protecting your privacy to the extent of IE History cleaning, but then the prefetch cleaning is only a minor part of CCleaner.

I know fully well you could say, "what about the fact it will delete the prefetch data for the program I only run once a month?"... or "what if I go on holiday for two weeks and then come back?"... or "I've turned off the LastAccessedDate property on my file system so it deletes all the pf files." ... or "I'm in love with my .pf files and don't want anyone to touch them!"

If you think these factors affect you or are highly important then I'd thoroughly recommend you turn prefetch cleaning off, if not then leave it the box checked.

Either way in the vast majority of cases running the prefetch cleaning option in CCleaner will optimize the system (reduce the number of unnecessary files) and not degrade performance.
