Desktop icons disappeared, no internet

Used trial version Pro. Downloaded tonight. Desktop disappeared. Just some new background. No icons. No internet. Have tried restarting adapters but one if the upgrades may have been the adapter “killer” app. So I don’t know if that rather than Ccleaner is the culprit. I got as far as updating programs. I also woke up all the programs to no avail. I did an unsuccessful system restore and there are no others showing to go back further. I did save the registry files in my documents folder so I could find them if needed. I don’t know how to restore them to the registry anyhow. I’ve worked for hours to get my computer back up. I have a Dell desktop, Windows 11. Help please. I can get around only using windows key and my graphics settings are messed up so I have trouble getting to menus. What a mess. I hope I can find my recovery files.

So did you just run everything that CCleaner offered you on the first run?

System Restore is turned off by default on Windows 11.

Without knowing just what has happened here, I'd check what Windows user account you are now in.

Sometimes when Windows has had a problem/error then it will create a Temporary User account, and sign you into that new account rather than your usual account.
Being a different user profile it has it's own Desktop, icons, etc.
A brand new user profile will usually have a basic background with no or just the basic icons, (Recycle Bin etc) - which is what you describe.

Did you use the put ‘unused programs to sleep’ option &/or Health Check? If so you would need to wake them up via CCleaner.
