CCleaner and REAL Player problems

Recommended Posts

- I am still using REAL Player (RP) as my favourite media player because it has one feature I REALLY like.

- But CC dispalys some odd behaviour with RP. See the picture attached.

1)) RP shows up twice in the list with applications and in the list with files to be deleted, While I only see one entry in Winapp2.ini. Is this the result of remnants of a previous version in the registry of somewhere on my laptop ? Or is there a special program code that's dedicated to RP ?

2)) When I run CC for the first time and RP is running then CC seems to detect that "RP 20" is still running but CC won't ask me to close the program. But at the same time it doesn't mind that "RP" is running and shows the amount of files to be deleted (red rectangle)

3)) When I want to let CC delete those files listed/detected the CC WILL ask me to close RP 20 but it won't ask met close RP (see inside red rectangle)

Any idea of what is happening here ? To be fixed in a future version of CC ?

The one with the asterisk is winapp2's cleaning definitions, which presumably do more than the standard Custom Clean does.

Winapp2 is currently going through some major housekeeping and updating. Entries are being updated/simplified/merged/split etc. Take a look on the Winapp2 sub-forum.

So if you use Winapp2 then things may look different and may be a bit 'glitchy' for a while.

- So "RP 20" is "build in" in the program code ? The build-in script for "RP 20" seems to be doing slightly less cleaning than the other "RP" entry. And they both seem to target the same folders/files. That's why CC overstates the amount of files & diskspace to be freed in this one particualr case.

- What remains is that CC doesn't ask the user whether or not "RP 20" should be closed the 1st time I run CC. CC simply says "Skipped". See picture above. And that  could be a bug.

I haven't got a clue whether it is or not - I don't use either Real Player or Winapp2 myself.

I was just noting that the asterisked entry is from Winapp2 - and that Winap2 is currently going through changes.
So because of those changes you may now be seeing something different from what you are used to seeing.

Maybe because it isn't a web browser would be my guess.

I know that with my cleaners for portable web browsers for example Firefox Portable it just lists "Skipped", probably because it isn't an installed version and isn't coded to deal directly with a portable.

If you have previously ticked 'Do not show me this message again' for a 'skip' popup then in future Custom Clean will simply skip it when necessary without showing you the popup again.

It will just show 'skipped' in the results like it does there in your screenshot.
And it's easy to forget that at sometime in the past you have ticked 'Do not show me this message again' for a particular item.

So at some time in the past you have told CCleaner not to ask again about closing if Real Player 20/20 is running, so it's just been skipped.
Presumably 'old' Real Player wasn't running so it got cleaned - or if you don't still have the older RP installed then it could be a glitch in the modified winapp2.

Real Player and Real Player 20/20 are seperate apps and so it is possible to have both installed, do you have both installed?

- No, I didn't install both versions. I installed 1st the older version and then when a new version of RP was released I installed the newer version. I assume that the new installation differs (slightly) from the older version. Different registry entries and/or files ? If you're interested I still have the original installation files of both RP versions. (I always keep a copy of the last say 5 versions of RP).

- Tried a few times more to clean "RP 20" related files. There is certainly a pattern. As said before, when I do this for the 1st time (after re-starting my laptop) then CC won't show that message. When I want to do this for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time then CC will show that message !!!! This is for the "RP 20" entry.

- But the "RP" entry does never ask that one question. That entry simply always seem to clean the RP related files. As said before the amount and size of the "RP" files  to be deleted is about the same as the amount & size of the "RP 20" files.

- So, that suggests that the "build-in" "RP 20" script does contain some code that makes CC ask that one question.

Some more / final ??? thoughts regarding this problem:

- I must confess that I didn't like the GUI of the 2 latest versions of RP and went back to the version before that. I still have the last 5 or 6 original RP installation files (I know how to find those original RP installation files. Just look, after installation, for a program called "setup.exe". with a size of about 65 MB).

- The 1st RP line ("RP 20") hasn't got an asterix. So, I would assume that the "RP 20" cleaning code is included in the standard program code of CC.

- With the latest version of CC installed I also have a CC icon in the system tray. That also could be the reason why this odd behaviour shows up.

- As mentioned before: This one question "RP 20 needs to be closed ............ " doesn't show up the 1st time I run CC after starting my laptop. When I close and restart CC, then CC will ask that one question when I let CC analyze my laptop for the 1st time. When I close RP (then the process "Realplay.exe" disappears) then CC doesn't complain about closing RP. See the 2 pictures attached.

This picture also shows that there is only a slight difference between the 2 cleaning scripts in CC for RP.

- i continue to think that the embedded code for RP in CC (I assume there is such code) contains a bug. As a result of that bug CC doesn't ask that one question the first time I run CC.

- Here is another problem with Real Player.

- I also have MS Edge installed. As a result a few processes called "MSEdgeWebview2.exe" (see also the picture above) are running all the time. But somehow one of this processes is preventing CC from removing a few files (e.g. Data_1, Data_2, Data_3, .............. ) that are located in the following path:

%LocalAppData%\Real\RealPlayer\EBWebView\Default\Cache\Cache_Data\

- I have to manually stop these processes in order to let CC remove these "data_**" files.

- Any comments ? Any suggestions ?

Webview2 can be a PITA for some users.

It's needed by MS Office 365 and Outlook, but if you aren't using Office/Outlook then there is a way to uninstall Webview2 using a 'silent uninstall'.
See this link: https://windowsreport.com/microsoft-edge-webview2-runtime/

- I stopped the processes "MsEdgeWebview2.exe" and then CC listed those files called "DataXX" to be deleted. These files were also deleted by CC. Kudos for CC !!!!!!

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

I have an update for this "problem" with REAL Player. I was forced to re-install Windows 7 after a serious problem that couldn't be fixed.

Before I re-installed Windows, CC (version v6.11 ?? or v6.12 ??) came up with 2 entries (see 1st picture above). Can't remember if I made some modifications to "winapp2.ini". I upgraded from RP v20 to RP v22 and then decided to re-install RP v20. It seems the removal program/tool didn't remove all files/folder/registry entries from Windows and as a result of that CC thought that there were 2 versions of RP installed ("Real Player 20" and "Real player".

After the re-install of Windows 7 I also installed RP (v20.1.0.313) and then CC (v6.12.10490) only came up with only 1 entry called "RP 20". This is with the default version of CC and the version of "winapp2.ini" that came with CC v6.12.

A new update for this problem.

With the latest version of CC it seems this problem has been solved. CC still reports RP related files to wiped but the amount of files is now much lower. See picture attached. Does anyone know whether the CC program code for RP has been improved ?

(I must admit that I also have used CCEnhancer to increase the amount of entries for CC)

- Problems again with the combination of REAL Player (RP) and CCleaner. REAL Player kept crashing and I was forced to re-install the program. And here CC started to report that there were A LOT OF files generated by RP. I again see a connection between the MSEdgeView.exe of MS Edge. This seems to indicate that CC is here not to blame.

See also the pictures for more information.
