Suddenly, I'm a business

Recommended Posts

I have used CCleaner (free) for years.  I trust it because it has never caused damage to my system, unlike some other cleaners.  A three weeks ago, my motherboard, a used HP Z-230 workstation board, died.  I purchased & installed a used ASUS Z 97 motherboard.  Everything was fine until today when I got a pop up from Piriform saying I must buy a business license.  That is a mistake, right?  I'm 78 years old, retired.  Don't really need this. What caused it and is there an on-line way to correct it?

Never heard of that before.

All I can think is that maybe the previously used motherboard has come from a business computer that used to have CCleaner business edition installed?
Or maybe something else is flagging it as being a business computer?

@Dave CCleaner @Stephen CCleaner any insights on this?

Nobody has given an answer yet.

But as a quick answer then yes - just dismiss the notification and carry on, CCleaner will work as normal.

The '@' and blue names just mean that I've flagged this topic to Dave and Stephen who are Piriform staff members, to see if they have any knowledge of why this may be happening to you.

Because I've done it like that they will get a notification to pay attention to your question as soon as they log on.
As it's currently 30 minutes past midnight in the UK that may not be until tomorrow, they may already be in bed.

I had a business licence request the other day on a laptop I don't use everyday.

I just closed it assuming it was just yet another CCleaner popup (perhaps trying to remind business users that they must have a licence)

I've never seen that one, but yes it's just a marketing reminder for anyone using the free version for business.

At the same time behind it. but just to the side. was a different popup asking me to try Health Check (I use custom)

I felt I was being bombarded with popups 😀

In these days of shielding/isolation at least someone (some-thing) is still remembering you. 🤣

Dave & Stephen CCleaner,  So, the answer is "go get a cold one from the fridge"?  Seriously, can I ignore the pop-up?  What is the worst that can happen?

@iamwotiam: The "Using CCleaner in a business?" pop-up posted by Hazelnut is just part of the occasional awareness campaign that is run that the free version of CCleaner is only free for home users - not for businesses (and that for users who are in a business their IT department, aside from being very naughty, should really be using the CCleaner Cloud managed endpoint solution rather than piecing something together with home-user software).

If that is the one you saw then the most important part of the message for you is "Using CCleaner at home? Thanks for using CCleaner Free!" 🙂

If you saw a message with somewhat sterner wording titled "Commercial use suspected" or "Are you compliant?" please let us know.

Do you use the $ much in Yorkshire these days?

I know they'll take them in the pubs near Menwith.

Correct - communications are set by language and not by country.

The reason for this is that the combination of language and country is arguably an indicator of ethnicity, which for privacy reasons is one of those things that we deliberately don't want to know (along with your age, gender, religion, health, political affiliations, trade union membership, etc) because then we'd have to look after that data.  Given that CCleaner's user base is larger than the population of most countries, that's the sort of hassle we'd rather do without.  We have some basic account management information collected for paying customers - but outside of that, anything else is really none of our business.

2 different popups at the same time is way too much.

What was the second one?  Or were you referring to the Health Check first-time use welcome screen?

Does that not count as a popup then?

This is on the same machine as I got the 'business popup' shown in thread earlier, so it hardly counts as first time use does it?

now I get email notifications of new comments.  Is there any way to turn off all of this?

I'm not sure how it got turned on, but there a few different ways, maybe you somehow set  'A notification when new content is posted'

You can change that, and your other notification and email settings yourself:

  1. Click the little arrow next to you username at the top right of any forum page.
  2. Click on 'Account Settings'.
  3. In the page that opens look on the right side and click on 'Notification Settings'.
  4. You can now turn on/off which notifcations and/or emails you get.
There general options at the top and then below those there are on/off sliders for control of if you get an email or a notification on the forum for different things.
  5. When you've finished setting them as you want click on 'Save'
