I am running ccleaner 2.35.1223 on a 64 bit windows 7 ultimate, I use Opera 10.62 as my default browser, if I click on check for updates link at the bottom right corner of ccleaner interface, ccleaner launches both opera and internet explorer 8, no other software I have displays this behavior, is this a bug, or am I missing a setting in ccleaner?

Have you tried switching the default to IE8, rebooting, and then switching default back to Opera?

thank you hazelnut, i did switch to internet explorer as my default browser, rebooted, then switched back to opera as my default browser, and this issue was resolved.

Same here with Win XP Home SP3 and Opera 10.62 as default browser.

jawall, i hope this work around works for you as well.

Nope, does not work for me, xp home sp3.

I have a desktop and laptop, both configured the same and this only happens on the desktop.

A while back, I had to remove Opera and then did a clean install of Opera. After that, checking updates from ccleaner opened Opera, but now, BOTH Opera and IE 8 open when checking updates from ccleaner. ccleaner is the only program that makes this happen.

Maybe an Opera problem or a Windows issue. It's no big deal, just annoying.

I suspect it is a ccleaner issue, since other programs do not display this problem.

will be a registry issue not ccleaner

You will need to check what is the default http protocol, Off the top of my head you should really be making it user basis, and not system wide. Which means it wont effect other user accounts.

I'm no expert in the protocol so i may be wrong, but check these three settings for "C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" "%1"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command "C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" "%1"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command "C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" "%1"

***EDITED**** Always a good idea to back up the registry before making any changes.

edit* i now believe this is not the issue. I will continue to try debug this. I'm suspicious it's a opera bug since the same happens with opera set as default here. Maybe not writing to the registry correctly.

I captured the Three registry changes that occur during, default browser change, and ccleaner starting the process to open a url.

I am not a main opera user, but taking a look it does not set all the protocols by default when becoming the default browser. It may be worth posting on operas forum.

I have attached the two files (for got to save third) if you care to look your self. Iv spent a good deal of time searching for possible conflicts and now admitting defeat.

FirefoxLog.txt

OperaLog.txt

Just before closing the logs i noticed a conflict with this entry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application "Firefox"

Changing this entry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application "Opera"

Resolved the issue. I re changed it back to "Firefox" then repeated these steps 3 times.

Each time with opera set as default browser if this entry did not reflect as "opera" it would cause IE to open.

I hope this sorts your issue

I am reporting this as a bug to opera.

Thank you hazelnut, I hope the OP reports back with a resolved reply. Would bring a great deal of satisfaction after searching through 1k lines of logs lols.

Yes, thanks for the hard work, but still, this does not work for me.

I was afraid of that after more testing today. Are you a single user or does your os have multiple user accounts?

I'm a single user. What's strange is, I have two computers basically set up the same and this only happens on one.

It is strange, i can not replicate this issue in a virtual machine, but can in another user account.

Im trying to resolve the issue in the second UA since my way did not resolve it there. i will post back

Thanks, I have to be away for a bit, but I'll check back.

The computer that does work, had the "Opera" in the registry and the one that didn't work had "IE". Changing it to "Opera" didn't help.

Good luck.

I assume you mean changing it to opera and then restarting the p.c. . . . right?

also have you tried going into default programs and settings and making sure opera is listed there as the default browser?

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

Do you know how to monitor the registry?

Regmon is a little tool that has sadly been discontinued.

Open Regmon.exe

In the dialog (include textbox) write CCleaner.exe Then ok

Open ccleaner, and a list of entrys should appear. Press ctrl-x to wipe the screen

Now click the link. Do not do anything other then this. File - save as - save the .log

rename it to ccleaner.txt (piriform does not alloow upload of .log)

then maybe i can see

Sorry, but this program does not work as you described. The update problem is minor and I will live with it. I just don't have the time to spend on it.

I REALLY appreciate your efforts in trying to help me with this!

Thanks.

Update... Glad you got it fixed.

For me, Firefox seems to have fewer problems with tabs & other small bugs.

Glad you got that problem fixed, but if you have too many problems, you may want to try another browser till they correct some of their bugs.
