emptying the recycle bin

This past weekend I upgraded to Vista SP1. Since then I've been having some problems with CCleaner. I use my E: drive for video files, and often delete files from it randing from 1mb to 200mb. Most of the time I can delete them and then empty the recycle bin, and CCleaner works perfectly the next time I run it. Sometimes, however, as I'll show in the pic below, I can run CCleaner, and even though there is nothing in the recycle bin, it will run for long periods of time trying to erase something. I've left it running for over 4 hours before to just delete a few files it believes are in the recycle bin and when it's finished it says it erased around 0.87mb. Any ideas what could be causing this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Zack,

That is a real interesting situation you have there.

The following info may help others come up with a solution.

These answers help to evaluate the problem.Just fill in the answers next to the questions?

Provide a list of your CCleaner.ini file.

CCleaner version ?

OS,edition ,and version ?

Browsers and ver.?

Security software and ver?

Other data you think might be relevant?

What did you do and then what happened?

Thanks,

:) davey

Don't forget a new update to the CCleaner Guide came out Feb. 06,2008.

Thanks for taking your time to make a report.

P.S. Do you have anything else running when you run CCleaner?

Also Happy Piriform Membership Anniversary!!!

Let's see here.

CCleaner Version: 2.06.567

OS Version: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1

Browsers and versions: Firefox 2.0.0.13 and IE7 with all the latest updates.

Security Software: Had Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed, but uninstalled a few days ago to see if maybe some of it's drivers/processes were causing a problem.

Other data that might be of interest: this only happens with files that were located on drive e:. Frives C: or D: do not have this problem. I've also had problems with the Secure Eraser program from Ace Utilities when I use it on files on drive E:. It will lock up and stop responding. Also, Winrar will respond the same way. It will sometimes unzip files perfectly; other times it will just stop and lock up during the process. Again, this only happens with files on drive E: Drive C: is ATA and drives D: and E: are SATA.

I had no other programs running when CCleaner was doing it's thing. I left it running while I was gone to work so I was sure the process would not be interrupted. I've also left it run for over an hour and then canceled the task and the program would lock up. I would reboot and start it over again and it would pick up where it left off.

I'm fairly sure it has something to do with my E: drive, but I can't figure it out. I have all the same settings I did before I upgraded to Vista SP1, but now I'm having these problems. Hopefully some of you smart people can help me out. :)

Have you run HDTune or something similar on your E drive.

Excellent Everybody uses it. http://www.hdtune.com/

I have used hdtune and it's not finding any errors. I have also ran check disk and it finds no errors on the disk either.

I forgot to thank you for the information as to how many other Apps are having similar problems on drive E.

Hazelnut has some interesting questions for you also in her reply.

My question is simliar. In Device Manager have you tried Uninstalling drive E and then Search for New Hardware.Maybe the proper Vista software did not get loaded for drive E the first time. Just a thought worth trying.

When you go into the e drive is there anything listed there that matches what is in the bin?

Do you use a virtual machine?

Have you ever formatted the E drive?

The strange thing is that the files that are trying to be erased from the recycle bin are not the names of any files on my E: drive. They're like a bunch of jumbled letters. An example is in the pic I posted.

No, I do not use a virtual machine.

I formatted my E: drive when I first installed it into my computer. I've not formatted it since then because I have a lot of data on it.

I have not uninstalled in Device Manager and then scanned for new hardware. I have however installed some new modded Nvidia drivers to see if they help the problem. My old drivers were from April of 2007. So maybe these newer versions will help.

Augeas, I don't quite understand your question. I would like to use the secure erase method to clean my data, but that's when the problem occurs. If I use the normal method then there is no problem.

Zack, what method are you using to get CC to access your d and e drive?

Exactly. Like is normal file deletion, or secure file deletion enabled. If secure is enabled it will take a long time.

To find out go into Option->Settings and look under Secure Deletion

I also wonder if it needs be run as Administrator.

I only have the problem if I am using secure file deletion. If I run normal file deletion everything works fine and the process is finished in 5 seconds at most. However, if I switch to secure file deletion, the problem starts. Even a simple overwrite (1 pass) can take 4 hours. On my old install of Vista I could do a 3 pass overwrite and it would take no longer than a minute. So I'm just using normal file deletion for now since it does not cause any problems.

I mean er, how are you accessing your d and e drives? When CC is opened or run there is no way to access a specific drive, I guess CC references the drive the O/S is installed on, which is overwhelmingly the c drive. To clean anything on other drives the only way I have found is to drag the drive letter to the Include section and tick the Clean Custom Files box. Or I think you can include them in your cc.ini file. Maybe this is what you do?

Ah. I understand now what you meant. CCleaner is not accessing those other drives. I have it set to only remove stuff from C: drive. The problem I had was when I would run CCleaner in secure file deletion mode and it got to emptying the recycle bin... it would take ages to erase files that were shown as coming from the E: drive. So other than that... CCleaner is not supposed to be removing anything from C:.

Hey Zack,

Come back and fill us in.I lost track of the thread until tonight.

You and Augeas both have me confused,I think.

Augeas pointed out that CCleaner does not normally clean anything from drives other than your %systemdrive% unless possibly you are using the Include feature.

I think he certainly may be correct.

I was surprised initially when you said E drive but you also said "recycle bin".Since I don't use CCleaner to empty my "recycle bin",I was not sure if it would or would not empty all your recycle bins.

What puzzles us is how are you doing this.

In your last reply you said " So other than that... CCleaner is not supposed to be removing anything from C:. ".This is the reverse of what I understand Augeas to be saying.

You may have a "corrupt" folder on your E drive that still needs fixing.

As far as using Secure Delete in prior versions of CCleaner some versions were not actually erasing anything. That is why they seemed to be doing it so fast.

You are the second user to report Recycle Bin problems on drives other than C drive.

Oh, surely not!

Now I see what Zack is doing, deleting from the recycle bin. Although the files are 'deleted' to the bin, they still remain (as far as I know) in the same place as they were, i.e. on the d and e drive, but are flagged in some mysterious way that only M/S geeks know.So Cc has to delete the files in the extrenal drives when secure deletion is chosen. In normal deletion I guess that the MFT is modded and perhaps a few free space ponters are set so that little activity takes place on the ext drives.

So, I suspect there is some speed problem with the e drive, peculiar to your pc setup. I have no geat ideas, set as slave, low read/write speed, badly fragged? Can you live with normal deletion? If not I certainly would only use one overwrite.

PS All of my disk management knowledge comes from IBM and Teradata mainframes, all VTOCs and SVC calls and zapping free space pointers, so these pesky little boxes might not behave in the same way!

I am still not sure if Zack is using the Include option to "clean" the E: drive recycle bin.

However, he does state that the E drive is causing other Apps to hang also.

I still don't know if CCleaner cleans Recycle Bins othe than C drive.

Your description in the first paragraph is dead on about what I was using CCleaner to do. Thank goodness you were able to word it better than me. :)

As for the problem, I seem to have it fixed. I installed some updated specific drivers for my Nvidia chipset. The drivers from Nvidia were over a year old, so I installed a custom updated set from a forum dedicated to Nvidia drivers. Since updating the chipset drivers I'm not having problems with any of the problems I was previously having.
