Seems never ending.
Security researchers have developed a new type of malicious rootkit software that hides itself in an obscure part of a computer's microprocessor, hidden from current antivirus products.Called a System Management Mode (SMM) rootkit, the software runs in a protected part of a computer's memory that can be locked and rendered invisible to the operating system, but which can give attackers a picture of what's happening in a computer's memory.
The SMM rootkit comes with keylogging and communications software and could be used to steal sensitive information from a victim's computer. It was built by Shawn Embleton and Sherri Sparks, who run an Oviedo, Florida, security company called Clear Hat Consulting.

Not for me but some may find this offer useful. Registration required.
Acronis True Image 8.0 Personal Edition allows you to make clone images of your hard-disks and partition's, and restore the backup image for 100% data recovery when disaster strikes, Acronis True Image 8.0 also features Bootable Rescue Media Builder to prepare bootable rescue media like live CD or floppy-disk which can be used to boot the computer and restore the system in-case the OS is unable to boot. -
Hmmm, wonder what it could be? A black hole, dark matter or maybe even an earth like planet?
Anyone know what NASA has been looking to find for around 50 years?
WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations. -

Had a bit of a chuckle at these folks where they try and pose the same as their baby pic.

Take care and be aware!
Since Friday, more than half a million Trojan horse programs disguised as media files have been detected on consumer PCs, according to McAfee Avert Labs."This is one of the most prevalent pieces of malware in the last three years," said Craig Schmugar, a McAfee Avert Labs researcher, in an e-mailed statement. "We have never before had a threat this significant that arrives as a media file."
The Trojan malware, Downloader-UA.h, was added to the McAfee database several days ago. In the past 24 hours, it has been detected by McAfee VirusScan Online on more than 119,000 computers out of almost 436,000 scanned, an infection rate of 27%. Other malware McAfee is tracking exhibits an infection rate in the 1% to 5% range.

Must admit that I had the same experience with several different distros I've tried and hardly ever hook those hard drives up anymore.

You could try Agent Ransack which is a free search utility and seems to have a text search function.
Download for Agent Ransack is towards the bottom of the page.

I have my right click menu almost perfect and exactly the way I want it EXCEPT this annoying useless 'new shortcut' option.
I find the New - Shortcut handy for making an ipconfig /flushdns, process idle tasks, shutdown and restart shortcuts.
Another example is a shortcut with "C:\WINDOWS\system32\control.exe" will make a Control Panel shortcut on desktop where you can change the icon to suit.

Probably an urban myth but funny nonetheless.

The place that is illuminated most when the Sun has gone down? New York?s Times Square perhaps? what about the glow of office lights around London?s business district? or maybe the bustling heart of Mumbai, the world?s most populated city.
They?re all pretty bright, but of course nothing could beat the flashing, colorful sea of lights that make up Las Vegas - the brightest place on Earth.

I posted this quirk a fair while ago.
Open Taskmanager and note Explorer's mem usage.
Open My Computer or My Documents and minimize to tray and watch explorer dump a lot of it's memory.
Note Taskmanager's mem usage and minimize then bring it back up and it shows Taskmanager using less than half the memory.
Is it actually dumping memory?
Don't really know.

Some of you fellas must be mind readers.
I do roll my own and use an ashtray similar to the bottom pic posted by YoKenny.

How do you install and set it up for the memory option?
This feature is selectable through the GUI's at setup.
It will also ask if you want create a virtual partition where data can be saved from within a Returnil session.
I don't create that virtual partition as I can save anything to a normal partition(other than C), CD or USB drive.
Only C drive is virtualized and not any any other partitions so any changes made to say D partition remain.
Remember that whilst in Returnil mode no changes whatsoever are retained to C including any AV signature updates but I think with using the disk cache method you are able to commit changes on the fly.
Meaning you are able to save data to the real C drive if using the disk cache method.
May sound a bit complicated but trust me it ain't.
The older versions didn't protect the MBR or against sector editors so it may be worthwhile upgrading to the latest and don't forget to uninstall the old version first.
-
Returnil uses virtualization technology.
Once you enable Returnil mode any and all changes simply disappear on reboot.
-
Yes it on work good so far Hope it stop spyware so on.
Yes it is an excellent app in that it protects the MBR and also against sector editors.
I do have the premium edition gifted to me for beta testing but I prefer to use it more along the lines of the free edition in using the memory cache method.
It doesn't actually prevent any malware getting installed but on reboot everything is reverted to exactly how it was to before entering Returnil mode thereby wiping any nasties.

Can you remember when Giant antispyware was the best and MS got hold of it and turned it into something else, Windows Defender I think?
And I think AVG AS used to be Ewido.
Anyway SuperAntispyware would be my choice for an on demand AS.

DennisD's suggestion made me laugh.
Glad you got a good chuckle out of it as well larry39.

SAS, Dr Web Cureit, Smitfraud Remover, VundoFix.exe, RougueRemover are some of the apps I use in cleaning up other pc's.
AVZ is another tool I have recently started using after seeing it posted over at Wilders which is a standalone with heaps of features.
On my own machine all I do is "Delete contents of sandbox" to get rid of anything picked up while surfing and or reboot with Returnil active.
Edit:
If you decide to try AVZ don't forget to go to File and select "Database Update"

You could try clearing the dns resolver cache?
