Just wondering what other members think about whether spybot is still a one to have in the fight against spyware.
-
Perhaps they got classed as temp files as they were stranded in no mans land while waiting to be rewritten to cd.
try this

I know someone who recovered jpegs using this free software. Wish you luck.
Not a good time to say this I know, but PLEASE back up important info like this daily.
P.S. Just seen Mike's post, another option for you.

Today mine is Gloria - Van Morrison.
Tomorrow it will be something else

The info is in the link Jago

Just in case anyone gets a FP in the next few days, they are fixing it.
-
In case you need to lotse, previous versions on right-hand side.

There is a mention here about ripping and 0 bytes

Andavari frequents that forum so if he sees this post he may be able to help.

Have you tried (and failed) to burn any music to cd?
-
Try having a read here as a start, someone else will probably post with some more ideas soon.

I can run a HJT but it may not be the current one - cant download that :-(
If Humpty's suggestions don't work, put a hjt log in the hijackthis analysis part of this forum, perhaps posting a link to this thread also so the spyware mods can get the history of your problem.
-
Until someone else jumps in with a solution, you could try looking at these 2 links, one leads to the other.
It may give you some ideas anyway.

I use AntiVir and luckily have no update problems.
I liked Avast a lot, but it didn't seem to like my system too much, made heavy work of it, and the mail scanner I had to disable almost immediately, as I found racing pigeons would have been quicker.

Internet Explorer can sometimes get corrupted registry files and gets confused about which file association it needs (hence Humpty's suggestion above) Can you remember anything that you installed or uninstalled around the time your problems started?
Are your computers linked?
Perhaps a hijackthis log my be an idea if nothing else comes up that works.

Have a look here to see if this helps

Welcome to the forum

Have made enquiries Humpty as I am also a slim build person!
Also prefer people to have the choice to use builds without the toolbar if they wish.

Good news that you are up and running with your restore points again
-
How much do you get paid?
Seems like a lot of work to do when you could just educate them and then they wouldn't get virus'. Or need all those programs running. They could surf like you n me and go wherever they wanted to. Click any link they wished. Actually use the internet.
How many computers do you have set up? I mean you would have to test this on 95 to Vista wouldn't you? I have seen software recommended for only one or two versions of windows. How many differently configured computers? Are you given brand new computer set-ups to test this on? All different brands?(HP told me their computers don't like Nero)
Sign me up! I'll even quit recommending Linux to people. Would be bad for business.
XPSP2,
1984 had it spot on with what he said in his post.
ALL helpers on here ( and that includes forum members because everyone here tries to help out everyone else) do so because of a desire to help fellow users, make friends and learn a bit at the same time.
rridgely makes an extra effort testing malware/virus software to help new users especially.
People do not become expert computer users overnight and need software to protect 'til they work things out. In fact a lot of users, experienced or not, still prefer to use protection software as things are getting a bit rough out there in case you hadn't noticed.

Right click on an OPEN area of task bar to the right of the "start" and "quick start" area and the left of the "notification tray" to access the Task manager and do other tasks. Must be on an OPEN area in the blue bar, not on a running task. Works on XP and Vista. Not sure about other Windows Op. Systems.
Always done it that way as I find it easier than ctrl-alt-delete.
It's all about personal preference
-
Just tried both of the above ways, duplicates are gone.
Yes speed dial is okay, no doubt about that, but I really like just being able to click on the personal bar and have my forums that way.
Thanks guys

Mike, I remember a poster here who had set a cleaner to wipe free space, forgetting that when the free space falls below 50mb sys restore removes the restore points.

The article is a guide and can be helpful, later on in the above thread Norton was the culprit, which is also mentioned in the guide.

In opera I use the personal bar and have 4 forums there so I just have to click and I am there. (In case anyone doesn't know, you get them by click-hold-drag icon from a tab you have open, to the personal bar.)
This works great for me, however the other day I noticed when I opened my bookmarks that these 4 are listed twice!

Hello Janz, CCleaner does not remove system restore points.
Have a read of this system restore troubleshooting guide, it is very good and quite often the answer can be found there.
Spybot S+D still a "must have " app?

Same here Mike, run both the apps you mentioned but wondered how many others still ran spybot, and if people thought it was still worthwhile having.
