ccleaner 4.01 corrupts Firefox 20.0.1 bookmarks toolbar

Firefox 20.0.1 with no syncing, WinXP SP3: ccleaner 4.01 corrupts the bookmarks toolbar, making all bookmarks from a certain one -- a reference to a local file -- disappear from view in the toolbar. Viewed with "Show all bookmarks" they are still present, but the "certain one" has no properties and cannot be removed or moved. I've run a differential test for this and I have screen snaps to support it, below.

 

(1) With nothing else running, before running ccleaner everything is present and working from a backed-up copy of my entire Firefox setup.

 

(2) I run ccleaner while Firefox is running, but tell ccleaner not to close Firefox and clean it, then immediately after ccleaner close Firefox and reopen it. Everything is still correct.

 

(3) I then exit Firefox and run ccleaner, cleaning Firefox, then immediately re-enter Firefox, and the bookmarks toolbar is corrupt as described.

 

ccleaner seems clearly to be the cause of the corruption.

Further testing shows that this corruption happens when Download History is selected for Firefox in the Applications tab. In my test it was the only option selected. It doesn't happen when only Internet Cache, Internet History, or Cookies are selected.

In the Firefox user forum where I asked about this, I was informed that download history has recently been moved to the same database that holds other places, including bookmarks; so code that affects download history definitely has the potential to affect bookmarks.

PaleMoon is based on the same Gecko engine as Firefox and uses the same Addons etc,

but the Palemoon developer provides a welcome relief from the insane Mozilla habit of fixing and thus breaking what used to work.

 

I have used Palemoon for several years and it always rendered Gmail the same way,

When Firefox seemed to be unreadable every other day I removed it as a waste of space.

I can reproduce the problem consistently with my setup (FF 20.0.1 EN and ccleaner 4.01), and I'll consider providing my files to a qualified developer if it'll help resolve the bug.

Alan, pull the reigns a bit mate, remember the original poster is a human, and may not get everything right

 

Without priority support (via ccleaner professional) you'll need to do the foot work, that includes link to forums and providing a reliable way of recreation of the bug. Right now it seems this only happens to you,

however perhaps someone in the Firefox thread has stated something, and in my (as a volunteer random bloke) reading might be able to recreate this for you and provide aid.

 

Please present a debug report or an analysis list which shows your "certain local bookmark" (not sure what that even means though) being removed.

I cannot resist pointing out that although there were a few sweeping comments such as

The only specific comment was

You may not of had a problem before by using Ccleaner, but this forum and the MozillaZine fora are filled with examples of bad results using Ccleaner with Firefox 4+ versions. Firefox 4.0 was when the *.sqlite databases can into wide spread use in Firefox.

 

It seems plausible that "many other users have reported problems" could refer to the total quantity of Firefox versions in the chaotic rush from version 4 through to version 20.1.

That's my Mozilla thread, thanks -- I'm djcm. As you can see there, the only possibly helpful information is what I stated above: that download manager history has recently been added to places.sqlite, which also houses bookmarks. If the other comments there are helpful for debugging, that's just fine. (I can't imagine how, though.)

 

Debug output below is from a run a few minutes ago which, as earlier, corrupted the Firefox bookmarks toolbar just as depicted in the snapshots I posted above, so I won't repost screenshots. So what else could I add that would help isolate the problem?

I am using Palemoon and am uncertain of how Firefox has deviated from Palemoon

( Palemoon is stable and it is Firefox that is now forever inconsistent from one version to the next )

 

For me the Bookmarks Toolbar is everything that is displayed immediately below the Address Bar plus what is shown when clicking on the extreme right button ">>".

I do not know if Firefox is still that way, or if Firefox has other things in that row also.

 

I assume that only 3 items are lost from your "Bookmarks ToolBar", namely "PK" and "VLC Forums" and "Maps - Garmin".

I assume that the rows below showing date and "Stuff" are not affected by corruption and are just differences in how you protect your privacy on a public forum

I could of course be wrong.

 

One thing that is still the same is the "Menu Bar" which includes "Bookmarks"

When I click on the "Bookmarks" I get a drop-down list which includes "Bookmarks ToolBar".

When I select "Bookmarks ToolBar" I see another drop-down list which lists all the items which appear on the browser display row below the Address bar

 

Does corruption of your "Bookmarks ToolBar" affect only your browser display ?

or is the change to the display merely a consequence of the removal of three items from the drop-down list under BOOKMARKS / BOOKMARKS TOOLBAR ?

 

Is the removal of those three things the only damage that you can see when inspecting the contents of BOOKMARKS / ORGANISE BOOKMARKS ?

You totally failed to answer Nergal's question - What do you mean by "certain local bookmark".

 

I have just taken a wild guess.

 

I typed into the Browser Address bar D:\Test\Td.txt, which is a file as known by Windows Explorer,

and the Browser instantly changed that to

file:///D:/Test/td.txt

and displayed the contents of the text file.

 

Is this your problem - that bookmarks to display files on your hard disks and flash drives etc are deleted with history ?

Perhaps that is Mozilla's intention.

 

When I click on Bookmarks and select the "Unsorted Bookmarks" the top item is History

Not so: it's everything *from* PK onwards, including things originally visible clicking the guillemet at the right. PK is the "certain bookmark", and it refers to a local file (e.g., H:\DJC\Firefox\PK.html). The blacked-out areas are, as you guessed, omitted for privacy on a public forum.

As I wrote in the opening note, "Viewed with 'Show all bookmarks' the bookmarks are still present, but corrupted"; for instance, PK "has no properties and cannot be removed or moved" (I can later post a snap of that, but I obviously can't run ccleaner on Firefox while writing this). So the bug isn't a simple matter of removing bookmarks: they're removed from view in the toolbar *and* their properties are changed, while still somehow existing in bookmark limbo in places.sqlite.

I asked because of my experiences with Firefox of new chaos with every new Mozilla bright idea,

and this eventually which drove me to switch over to Palemoon,

I now fully expect to see user reports of new problems whenever Mozilla release a new version.

 

Having found that file:///D:/Test/td.txt appears as both a bookmark and also in history,

it is very easy to believe that Mozilla could accidentally clean the same item from both instead of only one.

I am astonished that after dumping all that stuff into one database they were also able to make it work.

I guess this is why they need their "nightly" testers.

 

When you were told at the Firefox forum that "code that affects download history definitely has the potential to affect bookmarks",

it is possible that forum members were surprised it still worked.

 

Perhaps CCleaner is using the same cleaning techniques for both History and Bookmarks that worked in separate databases,

and may need adjusting to the new situation of a common database.

 

It is worth noting that normal bookmarks have an internet location that typically starts "http"

and you are concerned with what is to me the most unusual "file:///".

In 6 retirement years of experimenting with Windows and exploring what I can get away with (or not),

the only times that my browser has displayed a local file was when I double clicked an application report file with a HTM or HTML extension,

and I have NEVER bookmarked any such local file or even thought of doing so until today.

 

It is possible that Piriform have also not thought of including such a bookmark when testing - but I am sure they could start thinking of it now.

 

PLEASE PERFORM ONE MORE TEST to facilitate speedy resolution.

Test whether CCleaner history cleaning of history performs the same damage to local file bookmarks which are NOT in the toolbar,

but are in other regions such as MISC and UNSORTED etc.

Corrupts my bookmarks on Fx21 too. It makes one bookmark entry unreadable (the name is there, but the favicon and URL is gone), Fx glitches when I try to click on it, and there's no way to delete it, only to restore a backup of places.sqlite. Strange, I didn't have that problem until version 21, I used CCleaner for 2 years and it was flawless.
