  1. Interesting because I had noticed CCleaner Pro becoming slower to open over the last few releases geting to 9 or so seconds for v5.90 to open, but 5.91 opens for me in about 3 seconds.

    No Idea what the difference is and whether it's CCleaner, Windows, different user settings, different AV's/firewalls, or whatever else?

    I've certainly done nothing in particular that could account for the change.
    (Maybe Windows, or Windows Defender has?)

  2. You may have noted that I had edited my post before you replied.

    No blame game, but by giving us the wrong information, and/or not the full information, at the start you got the wrong answers.

    If you had said that it happened when you clicked 'Check for Updates' then obviously I wouldn't have suggested that you try doing just that.
    (We are not mind readers, we can't guess what someone has done, they have to tell us exactly what they did if we are to work out what may have happened).

    Anyhow; now I know what you are doing I've been testing it myself and I am seeing the same the same thing with that 'CCleaner could not be updated' popping up occasionally rather than the 'Congratulations' message.

    It does seem as if there may be an intermittent issue with the update server, or possibly elsewhere on the internet, I'll ask one of the staff to check.

  3. It's also a pain with the download menu popping open and staying open everytime you download something.

    The release notes say that is by design; but to me it's just an annoyance and the download icon has now been removed from my menu bar to stop it doing that.

  4. So you are now saying that it isn't happening at launch at all  - you are getting that message when you click on 'Check for Updates'.
    (I'm not sure why you are doing that as you only updated to v5.91 a couple of days ago, but that's your choice).

    That check will show you the message 'CCleaner could not be updated' if it cannot reach the update server for some reason.
    That isn't a bug, it is meant to give you that message if it can't do a check for updates.
    The most usual cause for that happening is if you are offline.

    As you say that you are only seeing that message intermittently then that indicates that either your internet connection is dropping out, or there is an intermittent issue at the CCleaner update server.
    (or a problem somewhere on the internet route between your computer and the server).

    From other posts in the last couple of days I think that the update server has been a bit over-busy with users updating to v5.91, and there seems to have been times when people had problems connecting to it.
    (Possibly it's been busier this particular update because of the new licencing thing?)

    If that is the case then things should settle down again, if they haven't already, and you should stop getting that message and get this one instead:

    If it doesn't settle down for you, and is still showing you the 'CCleaner could not be updated' a few days/week from now, then come back and we can try and take a look at why you are having intermittent connection problems.

  5. The latest Firefox update changes to how it handles downloads managed to reset all my "open-with's" for downloads.

    I was sat there clicking PDFs, images, etc. and swearing because the bleeping things weren't opening, till I figured it out.
    Firefox had been saving them to downloads rather than opening them. I had to set them up again.

    Can you not simply run the app in 'Compatibility Mode' for Win7 ?

    On your Win 10 machine:
    Install the software.
    Right-Click on the installed app and select 'Properties'.
    Go to the 'Compatibilty' tab and set it to run the app in Win 7 mode.
    (Or try the compatibility troubleshooter).

    Try it on a Win 10 laptop first, and if it's successful you won't need the XP laptop.
    (Or you could update the XP laptop to Win 10. I did one a few months ago and it runs fine. You may need to buy more RAM for it but RAM is cheap enough).

    So the first thing to say is that Firefox is a web browser and does not send mail.

    It sounds that you are using a mail provider that you accesss within the Firefox browser. Do you know what that website is?

    For instance - I use IONOS basic mail which I open in Firefox by going to their webpage and logging into my IONOS account.

  8. When you upgraded from 7 to 10 Windows would have kept the old Win 7 OS files for 30 days (so that you could roll-back if you didn't like Win 10).
    After those 30 Days Windows would/should have automatically removed the old OS files.

    3 years on with multiple updates to Win 10, and writes/deletes of other things, there is very little chance that even forensic recovery could get any of those Win 7 OS files back.

    Why are you wanting to do this?

  9. I also note that the screenshot that you removed earlier shows that it is PayPal that has charged you - not Cleverbridge or CCleaner.

    The Transaction ID is clearly shown on that PayPal invoice. For your security I won't repeat it here.

    I suggest that you need to cancel the repeating transaction on your PayPal account, and contact PayPal if you want to chase a refund.

    I have split your question into it's own thread.

    It's best to start your own thread rather than tagging on to someone elses', especially if that existing thread is still active.
    When you have two people asking questions on the same thread it can get confusing knowing who is answering which person.

    Your drive:
    A 4TB HDD is going to take a long time to do a full Defrag.
    It's just one of those things, the bigger the drive the longer a full defrag will take.

    The fragmented files themselves seem to be quite large as well, 31 files in 1.3 TB so an average of 42 GB each (I assume they are all MP4 files), and they are in a lot of fragments.
    So there is a lot of work to be done to defragment this drive.

    The estimate of how long it will take may be about right, but personally I don't take too much notice of those guestimates of how long it will take, they can be out by a long way and suddenly change up or down.
    It's the same with anything that shows an estimated time  remaining.

    You can Stop the defrag and go back to it later, but when you restart it will have to look at the whole drive again and so will probably say about the same 20 hours. it's a gustimate.
    If you do want to stop it then do it properly, click the 'Stop' button and then let Defraggler finish what it is currently doing before closing it.
    If you force it to close, or crash it, then there can be a lot (GB's) of temporary files left on the disc.

    I'd let it finish, then once the disc is tidied up in future you should do a 'Files Only' defrag which takes less time. To do that:

    1. Open defraggler and analyse the drive.
    2. Click on 'View Files' or click on the 'Files' tab.
    3. Select the tickbox at the top of the list to select everything found.
    4. Click on 'Defrag Checked'.

    Updates:
    I wouldn't worry about updating Defraggler, it hasn't had a function update since 2018 so the one you have now will be up to date.

    Being honest, if you can't find the licence then just keep using Defraggler Free version it does she same thing you just don't have premium support.

  11. It has to be asked - Why are you installing a version of CCleaner that is from 2017?
    It's 5 years old, and 50+ versions out of date. To put it plainly - it is obsolete.

    I strongly suggest that you stop using that old CCleaner v5.34 and install the latest v5.90.
    Apart from anything else browsers have changed extensively since 2017, CCleaner v5.34 will not be cleaning them properly.

     

    To your comments about using that obsolete installer:

    Yes we know the offers in that old installer could be missed.

    And yes - there was a very rare bug in that old installer where sometimes the offer would be there but it did not display properly on the screen, so you couldn't see that something needed to be unticked. (You couldn't even see the box to untick it).
    I got that once myself, and an unwanted Chrome, about 7 years ago. I've installed CCleaner hundreds of times since and never got anything except CCleaner.

    Regulars here knew that something odd could sometimes happen, but because it was extremely rare it took a long time to spot just what was happening and then catch it 'in the wild'  and confirm that it wasn't just a lack of user attention.

    The installer was re-written in October 2019 so that if you did get an offer it would display the big blue 'Decline' and 'Accept' buttons as shown in the last set of screenshots above.
    The installer has had other changes/updates since then.

    So any comments made about what is now an obsolete installer will have no relevence at all to todays installer.

    But it would have taken us some time to track that down because there isn't usually a CCleaner shortcut in the Startup folder.

    No idea how it got there. I'm guessing that at sometime in the past you may have scheduled CCleaner in the Windows Task Scheduler?

    It doesn't really matter, if the shortcut has been deleted now then it can't be run at boot.

    As for CCleaner still running in the background, that is expected with certain settings.
    If you have Smart Cleaning monitoring your browser(s), or if you have set automatic updates to CCleaner, then it will run in the background and you will have a CCleaner icon sat in the system tray. (It will flash if/when it's actually doing anything).

  13. No problems, and glad to hear you have it straightened out now.

    It is something we see all the time that people will change the settings in Custom Clean, and then use Health Check anyway.
    And then they ask why it's not doing what they have set.

    The developers have tried changing the wording to make it clearer that each one works differently, but I guess that we are always going to get that bit of confusion as long as the two are both there,

    It does help if you set Custom Clean to be the default by going to Options>Settings and changing the 'CCleaner Home Screen' to Custom Clean.
    Then whenever you open CCleaner it will show you the Custom Clean screen.

    That shows it's CCleaner Professional v5.90, on Windows 10 Pro, and you say it's showing you Health Check each time you boot.

    It doesn't normally open on boot like that, so let's try to work out why it is doing that.

    To start with - Could you also screenshot the Options>Settings and Options>Advanced screens.

    Also, do you have Smart Cleaning and/or Scheduling enabled?

     

  15. Hi again @legendarysnake I'm not sure just what is going on for you.

    But reading back through your posts I realised that we may be missing a piece of information that could be relevant.

    You've said that it's a 2TB drive, but how much free space is there left on it?

    The things you describe are the kind of things that can happen if there isn't enough free space on the drive.
    It's usually recommended that you have 15% to 20% free space to sucessfully defragment a HDD.

    If this does apply to your drive then you could try moving some files off it onto another drive, that should then give the free space needed for a successful defrag.

    PS. There is a way to do a 'manual' defrag of an external drive yourself, if you have a spare drive. (One that doesn't contain already fragmented files).
    Simply moving/copying a file to a different drive, one that doesn't contain already fragmented files, will write that file to the new drive all in one unfragmented piece.
    Moving/copying a bunch of files to another drive should do them one at once, thus defragmenting them in the process.

    That's basically what a defragmenter does but all on one disc, it moves files and writes them in one piece to a free part of the disc, (then later moves them back when it's moved enough files to make sufficent continuous free space where they used to be), which is why it needs a percentage of free space to move the files about.

    I'm not too sure about your compression method, is it actually moving the files?, but if you are compressing files onto another drive then it should do the same thing.

  16. Thanks for explaining in more detail,

    You need to familiarise yourself more with how to use CCleaner, at the moment you are missing using a whole section in Custom Clean.
    That is why you can't see your browsers to change the cleaning settings, they are there, you are just not looking in the right place.

    As you say the 'Windows' tab only shows the 3 Microsoft standard browsers, and other Windows System catagories.
    All Windows computers since Windows 8 have Edge/Edge Chromium and IE installed by default, they are always there even if you never use them.

    To see the non-Microsoft browsers and change how Custom Clean treats them you need to switch to the 'Applications' tab, - see my screenshot above that clearly shows Firefox on the 'Applications' tab with some Firefox sections ticked and some not.
    Your other Browsers will also be found on the 'Applications' tab,
    Note that Chromium based browsers may be listed under 'Chrome' rather than their own name, but I think all yours should be listed seperately.
    You will also find other apps, both MS and non-MS apps on the 'Applications' tab.

    Remember that the ticks/unticks that you set in Custom Clean only apply to Custom Clean.
    If/when you run Health Check it takes no notice whatsoever of what you have ticked/unticked in Custom Clean.
    Health Check always uses it's own cleaning rules, not your custom settings.

    Browsers must be fully closed before you can clean them.
    If a browser, or any of it's extensions, is still running in the background then CCleaner can't clean it.
    It will ask you if you want to close the browser, or if you have previously told it not to show that notification again it will simply 'Skip' cleaning the open browser.
     

  17. TBH I've tried various settings/options in CCleaner and I can't get CCleaner to open the UI at boot.

    I can get it to open minimized in the System Tray (Smart Cleaning, Automatic Updates, Scheduling) or to briefly appear in the Tray (Run a one-time Custom Clean at startup), but not to open the full UI.

    You could probably do it through Windows Task Scheduler, or if you sleep/hibernate Windows with the CCleaner UI already open.
    Which is a thought, If CC is set to 'Shutdown after a Custom Clean', and the power settings have been redefined in Windows to sleep/hibernate instead of shutting down .....
    It would then depend on just how CCleaner calls for the shutdown.

    It works exactly the same as the Pro version except for:
    With the Free version you won't get automatic updates.
    All that means is that you have to update it yourself when there is an update - and there hasn't been an update to Defraggler since 2018.
    You won't get premium support with the free version - but you can ask on here if you need help.

  19. Could you tell us which version of CCleaner you are using?
    And which Windows version/build?

    A screenshot of the window that is opening for you would be helpful in identifying what may be causing it.

    Is it the CCleaner User Interface that is opening or is it some other window?
    Maybe a reminder that there's an update, or a special offer that you are being made?
    Have you been using a 14-day trial of Pro and it's now reminding you that your 14 day trial period has ended?

    Once we know what it is then we'll have a better idea of how you can stop it.

  20. As Nergal says Health Check offers very little in the way of customisation - that is what Custom Clean is for.

    In Custom Clean you can untick things that you don't want to be cleaned, eg. here I've unticked Internet History for Firefox.
    Custom Clean remembers that setting and will not touch Firefox History unless I later tick it again.
    You can tick/untick different things for different browsers that you have.

    You can set Custom Clean to be the default method by going to Options>Settings and changing the 'CCleaner Home Screen'.

    In Health Check about all you can do is: once it has analyzed click on 'Privacy' and in the screen that comes up untick 'History'.
    But Health Check doesn't remember settings and so you will have to do it each and every time that you run Health Check.

    From your question though I'm not sure that the History is what you are looking to keep?
    It sounds more as if you are wanting to keep certain active logins (and/or active tabs)?
    In Custom Clean the clearing of those is controlled by 'Session' for the browser. Untick that if you want to stay logged into sites and/or want tabs to reopen when you next launch the browser.
    For some sites the loged-in status may (also) be controlled by a cookie, so you may have to configure 'Cookies to keep' to keep that.
